I have fairly wide feet, so I ignored the people who said to size down. Now that I've been wearing them a few weeks and have broken them in, I'd say that they are on the roomy side, but not necessarily a whole half size too big. I could maybe size down half a size and only wear them with thin socks. I'm happy with them the way they are, though: they're super comfy, I can wear any socks I want, and I can lace them really tight. If you have narrow feet, definitely size down. Even if you have wide feet and thick socks, err on the smaller side of your size range.
Because the leather is soft, you don't have to break these in. I walk a couple miles to work, wore them the day after I got them, and it felt like I'd had them for years. That said, the toe part of the boots feel just as sturdy and hard as the ones you're used to.
These are nothing close to cherry red or brick red. The photo makes the color look brighter and warmer. It's more of a wine-y red and nearly verges on maroon. There is a distinct purple undertone. At first I was disappointed, but I have to admit that this color works with a lot more outfits.
It comes with both plaid ribbon and maroon red laces. The plaid ribbon is so-o-o-o cute! I was worried it would tear or something, but it's holding up well. :) These can be folded down and there's a little buckle and tab at the back to secure them this way. It's super fun. When they are fully laced, though, the buckle does jingle when you walk.
I usually wear an 8-8.5, and I bought the UK size 6, which is definitely a little roomy, especially now that my boots are broken in to some degree. I just bought another pair of similar Doc Martens (Triumph) in a UK size 5 but they haven't arrived yet. Perhaps they'll fit a little better? As of now, I'd recommend sizing down a little bit when you buy the Aimilies.
UPDATE: My Triumphs arrived today, and the UK size 5 definitely fits much better. They are snug but not too tight (and they're very far from broken in as yet). I definitely recommend sizing down - in my case, a UK size 5 when I usually wear a US 8 or 8.5.
2017 UPDATE: Soooo I'm an idiot (but also, I was new to UK/US sizing when I first wrote this size) and it turns out that my true shoe size is 7.5, which is why these run slightly large on me. Also, in January 2017 these boots are still holding up wonderfully despite my shameful lack of upkeep on them. Definitely recommend.
One thing I absolutely adore about these boots is the gorgeous blue-and-green plaid laces. The print is wearing off a little where the laces clench against the grommets, which is a little disappointing, but doesn't really take away from cute they are. Hopefully they won't fade completely in the near future.
A lot of reviews say that the Darkened Mirage boots are actually green, and while mine are a little greenish, I'd say they're primarily black. I do feel like I got what I paid for, color-wise, and actually like the slightly greenish tone. The toe is a little darker, but not so noticeably that it looks like they're colorblocked. I've attached pictures outdoors in daylight, and indoors, to show how they look in different kinds of light. These boots are making me realize why Doc Martens are supposed to be such a big deal, and I'm really glad I got them.
The Women's Aimilie Combat Boot is fabric lined, a nod to the red Royal Stewart tartan plaid lined 1980s Dr. Martens. This review is for the Black Darkened Mirage, the lining is Black Watch plaid.
What catches your eye first is the matching Black Watch laces. Traditional laces are included...giving these an entirely different look.
And speaking of changing looks, these are fold-overs, complete with a buckle to keep them folded over.
If these are your first Docs, PLEASE do yourself a favor and break them in properly. If you do, you'll love them. If you don't, you run the risk of blisters before they can mold themselves to fit your unique foot. Wear for short periods, slowly increasing the time. The second you feel something is uncomfortable, BEFORE any real irritation, take them off and put a padded bandage or at least a band aid on the spot that seems like it might give you trouble.
Remember that spot and wear a bandage there next 'session'.
Socks, like SmartWools, or any good thick sock, are important. If they get wet, cram your boots with newspaper as they dry.
If you are that rare person that can wear them all day right out of the box, thank your parents for passing down some great genetics!
Because it is cut for a woman's foot, unlike a lot of the classic military Docs, they are slightly less wide, but can still accommodate a C width with ease. Most Docs are cut a bit generously in both size and width.
The Aimilie has the Air Wair sole, cushioning every step. Nearly non-slip on treacherous surfaces like oil slicks and ice.
One word of caution, if you ride a motorcycle, keep those soles away from hot pipes. I noticed a little gummy spot on the tailpipe, took me a while to figure out I had touched an uber hot pipe with the sole of my boots! Boots are fine, pipe cleaned up, just a quick word of caution.
The leather color is black. Not an ultra dark cop shoe black but more of a softer black.
If you get just one pair of Docs, this is a great choice. If you get more, these might well become your favorites.
