4.0 étoiles sur 5 The Best of the Best of Drag Racing 28 octobre 2014
Par Mark Graham - Publié sur
Format: Broché
Ah, the golden age of drag racing. Doug Boyce's "Drag Racing Quarter-Mile Warriors" speeds through time to give readers a fully narrated and illustrated look at the history of drag racing. Chapters include Diggers: The Top Dogs, Funny Cars and Not So Funny Cars, Rockin' Pro Stocks, The Wild Bunch, and Door Slammers Galore. If you are a racing enthusiast, these headings will likely evoke feelings of nostalgia and bring back thrilling memories...

Reading "Drag Racing's Quarter-Mile Warriors" is like reading a book on Olympic athletes. Only instead of talented men and women trained in various sports, the pages are filled with cars as main characters. Boyce has compiled stories and photographs of some of the most famous dragsters of all time (as well as their drivers) and takes a look at where some of them are today. The selections on how drag racing technology evolved over time are full of gearhead jargon, which car lovers can happily sink their teeth into.

While this book would make a great addition to any drag racing library, if you're looking for a history that is more chronological, you'll want to check out Allan Girdler's "American Road Race Specials, 1934-70: Glory Days of Homebuilt Racers" too. In addition to sharing stories about famous cars, Girdler also delves into how the phenomenon of drag racing related to current events and goes even deeper into the people who raced.

Enjoyed another great drag racing book by Doug Boyce. I agree with everything Todd said. We saw many of the P.S. cars back in the day. It was very interesting to see the survival and restoration of so many drag cars. Great text, great photos, loved the book. Looking forward to more from Doug.

A very unique approach to telling the story of known drag cars, their history, as well as to where they are today. Doug's way of telling the stories are very interesting, which provides great reading material as well as excellent photos. This is another remarkable book by Doug Boyce, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a drag racing buff.

This book by Doug Boyce published by CarTech will give you most everything you would want to relive the glory days of drag racings from the 60’s and 70’s. For those of us who were there it will bring back the names, the cars, and the feeling that once was and is sorely missed. Nothing quite like the sounds, sights, smells, and theatrics of a Friday night at the strip and this book does much to bring that experience back. The pictures are fantastic and detailed stories that link them to what many may recall or be surprised they never knew. Time and again you will find yourself saying, yeah I remember that. These cars and drivers were special in a one of a kind contest.

The book covers Rails, Funny Cars, Pro Stocks, Gassers, and much more. I would have liked to have seen more on the Jets, and Wheel Standers but then again they had more of a specialty role back then and the dominant groups were those that would show up week in and out through the summer months. We get a good description and account of the cars, drivers then and also how a number of these great machines have been found and restored to former glory. Definitely a book for anyone and everyone with an interest in the origins, feats, and spectacle of drag racing and its unique niche in the quest for speed and competition in a straight line.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Worth having in your library! 7 novembre 2015

For full disclosure, I received this book as part of a LibraryThing Early Reviewers offer. Not that I have that out of the way, this is a fairly amazing book that did much to put some pieces of a personal puzzle together for me. I grew up in the South in what you might think of as small town America - we didn't have a lot of opportunity to go to races in my semi-rural community - about the closest we got was when we took our 60's pony cars out into the back-roads and raced a bit, which is a lot more dangerous than it sounds - I think we were fortunate not to become era-statistics, and I don't recommend or condone this behavior to anyone else. But we were 60's and 70's kids with little regard to our own mortality - we thought ourselves invulnerable.

Besides having some familiarity with the famous cars of that era, there was a multitude of model-kits from Revell, Aurora and others to spark our imaginations. It was from that, an occasional TV program relating to the quarter mile drags, and of course magazines like Hot Rod and others that kept the fires loaded, if not burning hotly. Later in life I was once again intrigued while living in Gainsville, FL by the Gator Nationals and became a regular visitor to the strip nearby. It didn't have quite the same nostalgia that I was seeking but was exciting nonetheless - nothing quite like the roar of 1000+ HP engines echoing down the track!

Doug Boyce, in this volume "Drag Racing's Quarter-Mile Warriors" did much to tie my early-childhood nostalgia to what I witnessed at the track as an adult. This book contains so much information that I'm not sure where to begin. At minimum, it's an excellent primer in understanding the history of the sport, the cars and drivers that created the scene, and the modifications tried that were successful or failures to mold and produce the current drag strip as we know it today. The chapters are well organized, with many era photos in B&W and color to enhance the narrative. I enjoyed this quite a bit and spent a lot of time reading it.

If you're into drag-racing and had questions about things you've heard but not understood, this is a fine example of historical causal explanation. Rejoice in the examples and stories of gassers, factory mods and altered fuel cars described in all their glory in this volume. This one is well worth having in your library.
