A fairytale, but not your usual sappy one. There is a prince charming, but he's not what he seems. There is a happy ending, but not exactly what you would expect. In a nutshell: a great read. And is a stand-alone novel, no cliffhanger. There are two more novels coming after, and some characters are common, the story is unique to each of them.

Looking at the cover I was afraid it was just some other sexy-hf-vampire-warewolf-dragon novel.
Well, if it's what you're looking for, just forget about it !
The distressed (or not so much so) damsel does not lack a good sense of humor, which make the whole thing even more attractive, starting from page 1.
Also, it's quite easy to read for non English natives, with the salt of it always palatable.
Thanks Adrianne Brooks, your fairy tale is just an enjoyable renewal of the genre.

PS : sorry for my poor English, reading is much easier than writing !

Didn't know what to expect from this free ebook, just thought it sounded intriguing and what the heck, no great loss eh?So glad I took the chance because I really enjoyed this twisted version of damsel and dragon, hooked me right from the get go.
A young woman cursed from babyhood to be the object of mindless admiration and desire of any man within a certain distance resulting in several tragedies along the way, a fairy godmother moonlighting as a stripper, a knight in not so shining armor, a nasty piper, a wicked witch, goblins, a genie and the dragon hero - this story's got it all. The characters may be your basic fairytale fodder but Ms Brooks manages to not only twist the tale-telling but also each personage as well, making for some very entertaining reading.
I'm not into rehashing a story for the purposes of a review, especially when there's a blurb that does the job in the first place. Let me just say that this story is offered free of charge and IMHO is a real little gem. I've already got the next one in the series and I just know it'll be as good as the first.

The premise is very interesting with the protagonist being cursed with damsel in distress-itis... The humour and the snark are pretty great. What is a real pity is the occasional rushed feeling of some parts... A little more editing especially for the goblin massacre aftermath could have helped. An enjoyable read nonetheless.

Alexandria Greyson, Alex, seems to be cursed. She has to take her college classes online, had to quit her job and she rarely leaves her apartment. Why? Well, if she tries to walk down the street, suddenly men are everywhere asking her if she needs help, offering to carry her bag, her umbrella...basically trying to do anything they can to make her happy. At some point, several years before the start of this story, she had seen a Palmist who mentioned something about her being cursed. Sigh. This leads her best friend, Rachel, to hand deliver a business card for a psychic who would be able to help her. As long as she went at a specific time. Well, Alex doesn't do anything the way she's expected to so she doesn't show up until it's way after the appointment. This leads her to a stripper, then to her Fairy Godmother and on a Quest. No, it's not for the Holy Grail, go watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Special Edition) if that's what you want. This is a different kind of a quest, with strange, paranormal fairy tale characters.

I really liked Sam (our dragon) and Alex when she wasn't having a panic attack. Her Fairy Godmother was cool, certainly not the kind we see in old fairy tales. I like the story a lot. I laughed at certain parts and I enjoyed the fairy tales being brought into the modern age. Wow! Alex's mother was a piece of work, no she wasn't an 'evil stepmother'. It was a good ending and Ms. Brooks left it open to either more stories added as a series or at least more stories in this universe.

Now. All through the book were words that are spelled correctly but aren't supposed to be used in the sentence I was reading. For example, in the Epilogue at 98%:

"He'd loved the thought of having someone knew to call family and at first Danielle had been like a dream come true." Really, that should read NEW not KNEW. There were things like this sprinkled throughout the story.

Yes, I actually want to find out what happened to Alex's friend Rachel. And I very much want to find out what happened to Sam's Second. I just hope Ms. Brooks and the Publisher will be more careful about content editing.

Wow. How to begin. The story is good the writing needs lots of work. It's like falling down Alice's rabbit hole, or maybe tripping on acid. The story line doesn't always make sense and the author almost leads us to understand but doesn't quite get there.
Too many spelling errors and misplaced words to count. I'm guessing this story wasn't beta read or edited by a third party.

The book is unlike any I have read before, its start out just fine. but at some point the white rabbit came along and I followed him down the hole. while i was down there I ate the brownie, and when on a wild trip. it wasn't till the end that I found the drink to bring me back. but I did enjoy the trip. I must say miss Brooks your mind is different, but I kinda like it. with saying all this I am awaiting the next book. I left half of my brownie down there and I want it. thank you for the ride

This book was all over the place. As I was reading, there were times that I had to go back and reread a paragraph or two to see if I accidentally skipped over where the author had changes topic, or character only to realize that it was just a blur. I felt like this book had a bit of A.D.D. if you know what I mean.

HASH(0x9136021c) étoiles sur 5 Modern take on classic fairy tale 21 février 2014

*Warning: might contain a spoiler or two...*

Pretty girl = damsel. Damsel = distress. Distress = need rescuing by "Prince". Got it? Good.

This is a modern spin on a classic fairy tale.

Alexandria Greyson had a curse placed on her when she was born. She can't walk down the street without a guy offering to help her with something or another, and it usually ends with someone dying. Let me tell you while no one has ever died offering to help me (that I know of) it is kind of annoying that just because we're women guys think we're helpless.

Now don't get me wrong, it's polite to offer assistance. What is NOT polite is insisting or not letting a woman do something for herself. But this particular story is just that. Guys fall all over Alex, and I mean literally. No one ever wants her to love, they want sex. Violently. Like an animal. Literally. And to kill for her or even kill her just so no other male can have her. If you're a woman in this world you probably have a feeling that if there weren't laws against such things, that kind of cave man behavior would still be happening.

Finding her Fairy Godmother-yes really- Alex is told things she must do to proceed with a quest that will remove the curse. One of them is the heart of a dragon, which she finds indirectly via her helper, Sam.

Her mother seems eccentric and annoyingly pushing her toward finding a husband. Hey ladies, sound like anyone else's mom here? LOL. It seems as though she's just your typical mom, until you learn just what she REALLY is.

Her mother really IS wicked, her fairy godmother is a few fries short of a happy meal, "Prince Charming" -who's supposed to be immune to the curse - tries to attack her, and the only man she lets in to her heart is the only one who really can help save her. He also happens to be the one that has to sacrifice...

I loved the part about the "choice" Alex had to make. I'm not sure I would have been wise enough to make the choice she did. I also didn't know that dragons represented rebirth, so I was happy to learn that. It took on a whole new meaning.

What I also enjoyed about this book is the way it tells what it's like to be a woman in this world. Albeit it's facetious, the point is still made.
