I believe this album is a re-release/ re-sequencing of an album called "National Health: Complete". Which that one isn't, really. I picked it up years ago and that album had some tracks edited so that there would be room for some "bonus" tracks that hadn't appeared on either of the two original releases. I put the word "bonus" in quotes because if you're giving up some of the basic material, it ain't "bonus". It's like buying a car with a lot of optional equipment at the expense of giving up some stuff that's supposed to be standard. Kind of sneaky of the publisher not to give it a title that at least suggests that this thing's a compilation. If Amazon didn't have the policy of listing the tracks, we'd be thinking maybe it was a "long lost" or "out of the vaults" album.

I've been listening to National Health for many years now, but never actually owned one of their albums myself. And despite the passionate cry of "Get something from this band!" from all of the loyal and fanatical reviewers of their few albums, those albums have proven to be either painfully scarce or relatively costly.

Until now.

"Dreams Wide Awake" is a two-disc compilation of ALL of the music from National Health's first two classic cd's (just not in the same order as originally on those cd's). And thanks to Amazon's "used" sellers and the existence of eBay, one can finally grab all of this great music on a brand new 2-cd set for less than the price of most regular new-issue single cd's. I'm an owner!

Stalwart fans of the group would probably insist that we buy the original cd's, or the "Complete" compilation (which turns out not to be so complete anymore, now that new tapes and such have risen to the surface and made their way to cd). But I think any fan would find it hard to deny that the first two National Health albums ("National Health" and "Of Queues and Cures") contained most of their very best stuff. For a newcomer to this music, "Dreams Wide Awake" (95 minutes total music) is a great place to get an introduction to this band's unique sound, which one could compare to Bruford, Brand X or Hatfield and the North, but is really quite original - complex structures and compositions; numerous key modulations and time changes; continuously developing themes; intricate and innovative sounds and melodies....yes, everyone really should "get something from this band".

If you're already a veteran listener of this great band, this cd may indeed be superfluous to you. Or if you're an incurable completist who has $35 to $50 apiece to spend acquiring all of the individual albums, then skip this one. But if you're looking for an affordable (and very available) way to get to know and own some National Health for yourself, "Dreams Wide Awake" is a great value.
[2009 edit: Esoteric Records has recently reissued the separate cd's - yay!]

Highly recommended to Canterbury prog/jazz lovers who are still trying to acquire National Health.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 9.2/10; Performance = 9.5/10; Production = 9/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 9.4 ("5 stars")

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Why? A totally superfluous collection... 30 novembre 2005

Let me say right off that National Health is one of my all-time favorite bands, and the music here is superb - my beef isn't about the music, though.

Any fan of National Health already has every song on here, either by owning the studio albums individually, or through the superb collection that is aptly titled "Complete".

The reason I bought this 2-CD set is that, after exhaustive research trying to find out if this was a live album, or at least had alternate versions of the songs, I found several references to a bootleg 2-CD collection also named "Dreams Wide Awake" that had EXACTLY the same song list, with some terrific live and alternate versions.

So, figuring this must be a legitimate release of it, a la the "Beat the Boots" campaign by Zappa, I took the plunge and bought it "blind", as none of the merchant sites selling it had even the barest information beyond a songlist.

What did I get - nothing more than a re-hashed, semi-best of - and the tracks aren't even remastered or cleaned up in any way from my original CDs - a waste of cash.

I feel that since Atom Records assembled the tracklist to match the known boot "Dreams Wide Awake" so very exactly that they engaged in deliberate deception, along with not providing any substantiative information on this release, so that they could draw in National Health fans like me.

Well, they got me - I wasted my money on this one - but you know the old saying "Fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice...shame on me"

I shan't be buying any more Atom Records releases in the future - ripoff!
