Description du produit

Revue de presse

"Through the dramas of their wine-drinking characters, the (Tadashi Agi) instructs readers on how to taste wine. It’s hilarious, for sure, when a young woman swoons over a man’s decanting skills, but it’s also a great way to draw attention to the technical proficiency of a beautiful pour without getting too technical. And that’s what’s truly extraordinary about Drops of God: It makes learning about wine—which, let’s face it, can be a totally tedious thing for the non-obsessed—really fun... Seriously, this is juicy stuff!" -- GILT

“Absolute page-turner… It’s the sweeping two-page illustrations of taste-transporting moments (a shirt-tearing jam by rock band Queen, a maiden fleeing through strawberry fields) that better capture wine’s great allure than a thousand dry scribblings on history and weather conditions.” —Time Out New York

“An almost psychedelically beautiful work… It’s like Speed Racer crossed with Wine Spectator.” —The Daily Dish (LA Times)

“Visually stunning and effortlessly entertaining… To top it off, reading Drops is a trippy literary experience… Don’t be surprised if you crush this book in one night. It’s pretty impossible to put down once you pick it up.” —Bottlenotes (The Daily Sip)

“I have already ordered the second volume (out in December) and I guess that in terms of reviews that is a definitive statement.” —Wine Psych

“Presents some complex wine topics in an easy to understand manner, without talking down to the consumer… I urge all wine lovers to take a look, with an open mind, at The Drops of God. Give it a chance and you might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.”
—The Passionate Foodie

“Penchants for French wines drive the selection of vinos described with dramatic, often fanatical detail.” —Wine Enthusiast

Présentation de l'éditeur

Few comics have ever exhibited such sway over the economics of an industry as the Drops of God. The legendary wine comic that dictates wine market prices worldwide is now available in English for the first time!

A wine critic and his adopted brother must compete against each other to determine who will inherit their father's estate--a wine collection featuring 13 heaven blessed wines.

Shizuku Kanzaki is the son of a recently deceased, world renowned wine critic named Yutaka Kanzaki. In order to take ownership of his father's legacy, an extensive wine collection featuring some of the most rare labels of the last 30 years, he must find 13 wines, known as the "Twelve Apostles" and the heaven sent "Drops of God" that his father described in his will. But despite being an only child, Shizuku is not alone in this unique wine hunt. He has a competitor. Issei Tomine, a renowned young wine critic, was recently adopted into the Kanzaki family and is also vying for this most rare of prizes.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Wine Poetry 30 juillet 2013

This is pure enjoyment and excitement. This book is raising the ante and showing the path where wine reviews and critique needs to be. Let’s face it, wine descriptions, valuation and overall opinion lacks one thing and that is: Poetry, visual images and mostly of all, art! This book gives all that and more. Combine those elements with the manga comic aesthetic of writing and drawing and what do you have? A series of books so touching, so addictive that, If you are into wine culture and you really love to drink that liquid work of art that is wine, then, you just can’t let go once you start to read. I must confess, I hated when I finished reading the first volume of The Drops of God for the simple reason that I don’t wanted to start reading Volume 2 without read again the first one!
It’s not just the poetic descriptions of wine given by Kanzaki Shizuko or Tommine Issei but the drawings, the interpretations, the faithful representations of the labels of wine bottles as glorious as Romanee Conti, Cros Parantoux Henry Jayer, Chateau Lynch Bages or Chateau Mounton Rothchild –to mention just a few- but, the interpretation of those liquid assets on terms of visual images and poetic descriptions. To be honest, it has started in me –again- the unstoppable desire of learn more on terms of wine interpretation and not just to get drunk yourself. That, for me, is priceless.
I will not get into details of the drama involving the search of the 12 apostle and the drops of God -12 amazing wines and one that stands supreme above all- instead of that, I recommend to get yourself into these series of books, whether you are a Wino or not. If you are, you will be instantly acquainted and related with the wines described there and drama lived by the main actors of this story. Believe me as you go along, as you get inside of it, you will be craving and thirsty for a glass of red wine! If you are not, then the story itself will catch you and you probably will be curious and asking yourself about that white and red liquid that is WINE. My compliments to the authors of this magnum opus. These series of books are indeed the most influential wine books in years! Why? To put it simple, they are taking wine tasting and enjoyment out of the academy and deliver them where wine truly belongs: To the people who love to drink and share a glass of a nice Chablis, Chianti or Pinot noir. A votre santé!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Wine Education for the Dummy Otaku? 15 janvier 2012

This manga truly makes learning about wine more fun for dummies / otaku. It has quite an interesting story lines (the battle between two gorgeous guys for a huge wine inheritance), engaging conversations (even with all those wine related technical terms thrown in) and lovely art. It can be appreciated by the younger audience too. My 13 years old daughter & I actually watched the subbed Japanese drama series based on this manga first. We had great time bonding over that - making irreverent comments on the acting, the plots etc... We decided we liked it so much that we want to collect the mangas as well. She is really into manga drawing - so she had fun comparing the actors they had chosen for the drama vs. the representations in the manga.

So far, I am quite satisfied with the localization & publication of volume 1 in English. I think Vertical has a winner here and let's hope they will be able to turn around the series quicker as it is pretty far along in the Japan.

This is the first manga I've read. I don't care if liking this series makes me an idiot, I think some could argue that it doesn't, and I don't exactly know why I'm so in its swell that I gave it five stars, when it should have probably only gotten four, but... Getting info about something you are interested in, but mostly ignorant of is intoxicating, and if it's delivered in a soap opera/50s serial medium, well then apparently the author's got something. Again as with other comics that I am just now barely delving into one gives up a tremendous amount of depth or anything the on the surface smacks of middling thought, but what you get in return is focus on a narrow scope that you wouldn't be pressed to find in film and a hyper conciseness that even a short story might overrun. I practically finished this in one sitting, and writhed at my keyboard when I discovered Vol. 2 (english) isn't available until 12/13/11.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A Japanese manga that effortlessly crosses cultures and generations 30 mai 2012

I heard about this in France. What caught my attention was that this Asian sensation crossed cultures so easily. Of course, it's mostly because the manga focuses on French wine (although in the first 3 US-published volumes, Italian wines are also discussed). But it's also because it is so entertaining, accessible, substantive yet readable in a light-hearted way. I've tested this first volume on two busy adults who normally don't have time to read books for pleasure. One of them wasn't even that interested in wine. Both read the first book all the way through - it was unputdownable. That's power for you in today's ADD world, and testament to the incredible genius of these authors. I recommend this as a gift to any friend who enjoys good food and wine, whether or not they read manga or even fiction books in general.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 The whole drops of god series is amazing. It drops a lot of really good wine ... 24 janvier 2015

The whole drops of god series is amazing. It drops a lot of really good wine knowledge, is extremely entertaining, and a very easy read. Not to mention the fact that it's one of the most influential wine books of all time. I picked up the first volume and couldn't put it down until I finished the whole book! I then immediately ordered every other volume that is available in English. A must read for anyone who loves wine!.
