Revue de presse

“Absolute page-turner… It’s the sweeping two-page illustrations of taste-transporting moments (a shirt-tearing jam by rock band Queen, a maiden fleeing through strawberry fields) that better capture wine’s great allure than a thousand dry scribblings on history and weather conditions.” —Time Out New York

“An almost psychedelically beautiful work… It’s like Speed Racer crossed with Wine Spectator.” —The Daily Dish (LA Times)

“I have already ordered the second volume (out in December) and I guess that in terms of reviews that is a definitive statement.” —Wine Psych

“Penchants for French wines drive the selection of vinos described with dramatic, often fanatical detail.” —Wine Enthusiast

“Through the dramas of their wine-drinking characters, [Tadashi Agi] instructs readers on how to taste wine. It’s hilarious, for sure, when a young woman swoons over a man’s decanting skills, but it’s also a great way to draw attention to the technical proficiency of a beautiful pour without getting too technical. And that’s what’s truly extraordinary about Drops of God: It makes learning about wine—which, let’s face it, can be a totally tedious thing for the non-obsessed—really fun… Seriously, this is juicy stuff!” —GILT

“This is not only an influential wine book in Japan (and France) but is a gem of a find—something that is out-of-the-ordinary, yet based on serious wine understanding, i.e. that wine is a living thing and the memories that fine wines can evoke. It is a real page turner!” —WEINGARTEN

“This book is extraordinarily easy to like, and I vastly prefer whiskey over wine. I’ve been hearing everyone and everything hail The Drops of God as the latest best thing ever since 2009. As it turns out, the hype was right. This is good comic-booking.”

Présentation de l'éditeur

Wine novice Shizuku Kanzaki has defeated his rival, up-and-coming wine critic, Issei Tomine in their first of twelve wine hunting trials to find the Drops of God. By the slightest of margins, he was able to distinguish a variance in vintage to capture the First Apostle - 2001 Georges Roumier Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses. Now with his home safely returned and a gained appreciation for the nuances and personal connections people have with wine, Shizuku is now prepared to take on another challenge. Now Shizuku has to utitlize all his abilitiesto take on a determined and humiliated Issei, as they both go forth in search of a particularly capricious Bordeaux. Yutaka Kanzaki laid down a very task with the First Apostle; this Second will be a statement to test the mettle of both contestants.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The second apostle WILL be revealed!!! 14 juillet 2012

If you've read the previous volumes (and if you are starting volume four, then you should have), then you really know what to expect. I wouldn't say this is a melodrama, but it is a wonderful and dramatic story about an unlikely wine aficionado and his determination to beat his rival in tasting wine and inherit his father's massive 25 million dollar wine collection.

In volume three we discovered the identity of the first apostle. Know things are getting serious. Since the test has now proven to be anyone's game, both sides have raised the bar and begun to take the other more seriously. In this volume we see some interesting back stories on several of the characters as well as encounter some dramatic twists and turns.

Being a wine lover, I really do appreciate the metaphors used to describe wine, whether it be an allusion to Rachmaninoff's 2nd symphony or a reference to Pegasus. Though much time is spent oohing and ahhing the big, expensive wines, an equal amount of the story revolves around the characters seeking the best values or looking for wines that can compete with more expensive wines. Like finding something that is better than a 1970 Margaux from the same vintage and from the left bank as well (a lot of left bank Bordeaux was better than Margaux that year, and the reason is explained in the course of this story - and the wine that they decide to put up against the Margaux is considerably lower on the classification hierarchy).

Expect the story to continue to deliver. The drawings are amazing, and the translation is solid. If you enjoyed the last three volumes, then you will enjoy this one. I'm just sad that we have to wait until October 30th for volume 5!

UPDATE: Volume 5 will actually skip ahead past 8 volumes and we will be reading about the new world wines. So the publisher, apparently at the behest of the authors, will skip a HUGE chunk of the story, equal to 8 volumes (or twice as much content as we have up to this point). Just wanted to put that out there. I think perhaps the Japanese publisher felt that Americans aren't really lining up for this because of the focus early on with European wine. So they are going to skip ahead to the New World in order to appease the 'unsophisticated' Western palates.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 If you liked Vol 1 to 3, Vol 4 is more of the same! 5 juillet 2012

Yes, it's over-the-top, crazy, funny, sensational - it's a wine soap opera and it's unputdownable! If you loved the previous installments, Vol 4 doesn't disappoint. And for wine connoisseurs, yes, more great recommendations, including budget wines that stand up against the top vineyards. You'd want to write down those names and take it to the wine store. It's definitely worked for me as a consumer guide.

The whole drops of god series is amazing. It drops a lot of really good wine knowledge, is extremely entertaining, and a very easy read. Not to mention the fact that it's one of the most influential wine books of all time. A must read for anyone who loves wine!.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 The Second Apostle. 28 août 2012

The Drops of God Volume 4 continues directly from Volume 3. The plot and knowledge of wine on which it is based builds carefully and the series really should be read in order from the beginning, but there are somewhat self contained stories in this volume and it probably could be read on it's own.

**Note: This review contains no spoilers for Volume 4 but will have somewhat major spoilers for earlier volumes. **

Shizuku Kanzaki has done well in his first test as a student of wine and emerged victorious in the battle with Issei Tomine to identify the First Apostle. But there are twelve wines left to puzzle out and Tomine enters this volume sure that a chance conversation with Kanzaki has shown him the key to victory. As they both prepare for the tasting of the Second Apostle in very different ways Kanzaki will also attempt to protect a famous mystery writer who's receive an unusual death threat - an unlabeled bottle of wine.

This volume is more uneven than the first three, but the high points are well timed and very well done, making this another worthy chapter in Kanzaki's journey. The wine information here has more of a laser focus than earlier volumes and I found it a bit less interesting. People more fascinated by the intricacies Bordeaux and Burgundy wines will likely get more out of it. The art continues to be a impress and adds a lot of layers and texture to the story and wine descriptions.

Drops of God is clearly being paced with the long haul in mind but never feels too slow nor padded. This manga is what it is - a love letter to all aspects of wine with side stories that are largely romance based. For readers interested in that description it is an excellent adventure and Volume 4 continues to build well on the potential shown thus far.

A great success in Japan and a must for everyone who is remotely interested in wine and manga. A very unusuall approach to the complicated world of fine wines, and although the tasters have tasting skills like super heroes, it is very entertaining. Even for someone with 15+ years in the wine business, there are things to learn from this manga. Forget about other beginners guides and go for these books if you like to learn about the more expensive types of wine.
