Présentation de l'éditeur

Two highly trained killers... ex-comrades turned sworn enemies... the hunter and the hunted... on a collision course with each other and with history:

High above a mountainside in Austria, a Soviet citizen with an American-sounding name sails beneath a hang glider, taking one more daring risk in a life full of risks. What Marcus Jolly doesn’t know is that an old man in Siberia—facing his moment of death—has called on him for the most dangerous mission of his career.

In Washington, a man named Taras Arensky—one of the most highly trained killers in the world—is called to the White House to take on an extraordinary mission: protect the Soviet president from assassination.

Once Taras Arensky and Marcus Jolly had been the best of friends. Now they are to meet again on the moonlit cliffs of Yalta, at the Soviet President’s summer retreat. It is the opening move of a duel that will be fought across Europe, enmeshing a beautiful woman and climaxing at an international summit in Potsdam. It will call on all the deadly skills and cunning the two men have acquired over a lifetime.

Taking its place beside the best in action fiction, Duel of Assassins captures a world of shifting loyalties and boundaries, and two unforgettable modern-day warriors who live or die by their own code of honor.

HASH(0x91b534bc) étoiles sur 5 An Intelligently Crafted International Thriller 4 mai 2014

An Intelligently Crafted International Thriller

Duel of Assassins by Daniel Pollock is a well written, intelligently crafted international political thriller that lives up to its engaging title. Unlike most international thrillers out today that focus on Islamic terrorism, Duel takes place over a few decades in the late 20th century, but primarily in the waning days of the Soviet Empire. True to the genre, Pollock takes the reader on a ride to numerous and diverse settings - from Eastern Russia to Afghanistan to Washington D.C. to Turkey to Potsdam

Duel, at its heart, revolves around the contrasts of its main characters, Marcus Jolly and Taras Arensky. The two met in Russia as young men, first as adversaries, but quickly became great friends through a mutually endured tragedy. Jolly is an American who defected to the Soviet Union and becomes an accomplished special forces warrior for the Soviets. Arensky is a native Russian who does the same but ultimately defects to the United States after a catastrophic experience in the Soviet-Afghan war.

The duel alluded to in the title starts when Jolly is called out of a semi-retirement to conduct a high-stakes assassination against the leader of the Soviet Union. The Western political elite, and even the Soviets, are starting to prepare for a post-Soviet world and if Jolly is successful in his mission, it would cause chaos to their planning. Given the dire importance of stopping Jolly, the Americans turn to Arensky, who now works for the CIA, to hunt down and stop his long time but rogue friend.

What results is a classic cat and mouse game between the two accomplished friends and killers. The reader is treated to some great action sequences along with more than a few shocking revelations and unexpected plot twists. And it's a testament to Pollock's skill and confidence as a writer that he gets the reader to cheer for the Russian born assassin over the American born assassin.

I recommend Duel to any reader that enjoys international political thrillers, particularly someone looking for an alternative to the much more common terrorism related novels. With Russia once again assuming its role in the real world as an adversary of the United States, there will likely be a resurgence in interest by readers for Soviet/Russian themed fiction. It's timely on Pollock's part that Duel is being re-released now and it should satisfy any reader's general craving for a political thriller, and especially those looking for a Russian/Soviet themed novel.

The title of this thriller promised a lot, and I have to say it delivers, and more. Yes, there are two assassins, pitted against one another like in a classic western—in fact, with several showdowns, each one with higher stakes. And they face off with different weapons, including a terrific battle with sabers! Besides these climactic setpieces, the story unfolds in a panoramic way, from the White House to the Kremlin, from Afghanistan to Berlin, from Siberia to the South of France, with romance, treachery and political intrigue. Oh, and I learned a lot about the Soviet Union, the KGB, CIA, etc.

Dan Pollock’s international thriller novel Duel of Assassins rivals Ian Fleming. It gripped me from the first page.
After defecting to the United States, Taras Arensky seems to have it all, a great job in Washington D.C. and a fabulous new life on the horizon with Charlotte Walsh, a beautiful news correspondent. While enjoying an evening of celebration, rubbing elbows with local and national celebrities, politicians and media, Taras is called away to the Oval Office, a move that he knows will threaten his future with Charlotte.
Taras’s foreign family will be granted coveted passage to freedom, but in exchange, he must assassinate Marcus Jolly, a Russian man who he does not consider an enemy. Many years before, while in Russia as a cadet, the two men met under inauspicious circumstances; but when tragedy struck, Tara and Marcus were bound together in a common vow and swore to be friends forever.
Reading Duel of Assassins is like paragliding over the Grand Canyon, dangerous, thrilling and picturesque. This carefully plotted novel left me duly impressed with Dan Pollock’s extensive knowledge of Russian and American special services, up-to-date weaponry and his widespread use of Russian and German languages.
This well-researched, tri-continental novel is filled with intrigue and plausible current day scenarios that could easily blast across tomorrow’s headlines. The characters are so believable they just might keep you up at night. Richly detailed and stunning in its complexity, Duel of Assassins is so well written the imagery will unfold in your mind like a movie; it is nonetheless easy to follow all the colorful threads that weave together a most incredible tapestry of adventure. Once you crack this book open, hang on tight; you’re in for a thrilling ride.

Marcus Jolly and Taras Arensky, comrades with a common cause to find who killed their friend, end up on opposite sides of the political fence. One has a goal to kill an international figure at a world summit, and the other must stop him, even if it means killing his onetime friend. Both men are ruthless and dangerous.

Dan Pollock weaves a story of international conspiracy, taking the reader from the cold backcountry of Siberia to the political atmosphere of Washington, DC. The prose is rich, the dialog snappy. The details tell a story of great depth. I found myself drawn into the tale and wondering if this did not really happen. Duel of Assassins is an international political thriller worth reading.

A friendship develops when two strangers share their life experiences. Jealousy over a female and her suspicious death turns them into enemies and then into a race against time as one is assigned to take out the Russian President. The good guy gets the bad guy in the end. The tales of friendship of the two could perhaps be shortened without detracting from the story.. Otherwise a great action thriller. More of Dan Pollock on the wish list
