Hitler's last offensive in the West in December 1944 became known as the Battle of the Bulge. It developed into the largest land battle ever fought by the US Army. His plan called for three Armies under Generalfeldmarschall Model, to break through the American front in the Ardennes, cross the MEUSE River and then exploit the great port of Antwerp. This, it was hoped, would cut off the British 21st Army Group and the US 9th Army from the rest of the allied front, causing mass surrenders. Hitler saw it as a basis for another Dunkirk. SS-Obergruppenfuhrer Sepp Dietrich's 6th Panzer Army on the right flank of the attack was destined to gain the major honours in the forthcoming campaign. The detailed plan called for SS-Oberfuhrer Wilhelm Mohnke s 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler and SS-Standartenfuhrer Hugo Kraas's 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend to take the lead and form an all-powerful wave which would surge to and across the Meuse river south of Liege. IN the 6th Panzer Army order, these divisions were ordered to effect ruthless and rapid penetration and to bypass opposition whenever possible. For this task each division formed four Kampfgruppe - KG Peiper in the case of the Leibstandarte and KG Kuhlmann in that of Hitlerjugend. Three days after the start of the offensive KG Kuhlman has been halted after an advance of only some 6 km and although KG Peiper had advanced over 60 km, it s supply lines were cut, it was desperately short of fuel and it was at a fraction of its original strength- twenty-four tanks as opposed to the 117 with which it had started. Surprisingly, only a few of those tanks missing when the KG reached the village of Stoumont on the fourth day of the offensive had been knocked out. The others had either broken down or were cut off from the vanguard. This book describes the actions of KG Peiper over a 24 hour period - a period that saw the KG s attempt to push still further to the west through the village of Stoumont, reach its high water mark only 6 km later and finally be forced to withdraw in the face of overwhelming strength and lack of resources. This account is written in astounding detail - over 36, 000 words including copious reference notes, and many previously unpublished photographs and movie stills.

Since I have Vols. 2 & 3 already, at first glance I was a tad disappointed in the quality of the pictures (many stills from newsreels) & the maps without a key or explanation. After reading, it all makes sense & I'm just thoroughly amazed at the amount of work, research, & thought that went into this volume. Almost 200 of the 300 pages is covering one action on one day during the Ardennes offensive. The less than perfect pictures & maps are an integral & welcome part of the book. Four useful Appendices make up the remaining c.100 pages.

It's hard to believe this book is 10 yrs. old already. I dragged my feet purchasing it back then & it suddenly became unobtainable at a price anyone would pay. The apparently computer generated prices from some sellers on Amazon were & still are ridiculous, but seem to drive the market. I think a careless seller forgot the decimal point to start the whole $10,000 thing in motion. After waiting patiently for a year or two, one became available at a reasonable price & it was in the shopping cart quickly. I am glad to finally complete the set.

A Days Battle in the Ardennes

This book is one of the more unusual ones that I have read, and deals with Kampfgruppe Peiper at Stoumont during December 1944 of the Ardennes counterattack.
This particular battle marked the high water mark of the battlegroup when its advance was stopped 6km on from Stoumont, and was finally forced to retreat in the face of superior Allied forces and lack of fuel and ammo.
The authors have spent considerable and painstaking time researching this book.
In a foreword from Michael Reynolds (The Devils Adjutant, Men of Steel, Sons of the Reich) he describes how this particular action in his own book The Devils Adjutant is described in 5,000 words.
The authors account is written in 36,000 words and many of the superb photos have been published for the first time.
The layout is unusual in the fact that it is a "landscape' type book which just squeezes into my bookshelf.
It is written from both a German and American point of view and is based on after action reports of the units involved. It also draws upon the recollections of veterans from both sides which make the book well balanced.
The book is printed on fine glossy paper for excellent photo reproduction and has some great photographs of the men and armour during the battle.
The wonderful photos which are all well captioned and superbly reproduced are particulary well done.
These wartime shots show large numbers of the "during and after " type photos, destroyed German tanks, and battle action shots.
At end of the book are a number of Appendix covering such things as the SS Panzer Regiment 1 between Normandy and the Ardennes, war crimes committed by the battle group, The order of battle for the Panzer regiment and last but not least, the Camouflage patterns and markings of the various Panthers involved in the battle through colour profiles.
This was interesting in its self, as the authors through their research were able identify from the tanks camouflage pattern where a particular Panther was assembled and when.
There are a number of simple maps to follow throughout the book and are in black and white.
Finally as this is volume 1 of what projects to be a great series, I await the next offering from this group of authors with great anticipation.

Superb book, now very scarce and expensive.
Along with it's two companions Vol.2 and 3, this gives us an insight into the goings on at this pivotal time. Plenty of very clear pictures, maps, and useful text bring us along the Kampfgruppe Peiper journey.
In recent times I notice some great books remain almost unnoticed until out of print, and scarce, then the scramble begins, "Hey I want one of those"....

Outstanding level of research. Unfortunately priced for die-hards willing to pay extra. My set is now complete. I hope the authors can extend the series, "Duel in the Mist" vols 1,2 & 3. The book arrived intact in a very collectable condition.
