Feel the Burn
Commenté au Royaume-Uni le 25 mai 2009Achat vérifié
Day 3 of the 30 day challenge and I am aching all over. I run most days, but decided to use this to add to my fitness routine. All I can say is that it certainly making me use muscles that badly need toned. I love the kickboxing, inline skating and even the running / walking and grin and bare the lunges, squats and all things that make me feel the burn! I haven't had any problems with the controls and I also use with the wii fit board.
I love the way you can see calories being burned. I find that motivational. It doesn't bother me that you cannot weigh yourself as I just flip to the wii fit channel I've added to the wii menu to get a quick body check when i want it.
All in all I am happy with this product and I can see me using it most days as part of my exercise routine.
Oh, and I am no fitness freak, but a 50 year old unfit, overweight lady recovering from a long illness. If I can manage this then most people can.

What Wii Fit should have been!
Commenté au Royaume-Uni le 28 mai 2009Achat vérifié
I ordered a Wii Fit last year and waited and waited for it to arrive only to be disappointed. I hated the yoga and never really felt like it gave me a proper workout... I pre-ordered EA Sports Active and considered cancelling the order because I was worried that it wouldn't live up to expectations. I need not have worried because it is excellent and I feel like I've worked out properly when the session is over!
Best bits:
- A real workout that is customised to the intensity you want to work at.
- Encourages good technique (moves are not registered if you don't get it right and there are videos that you can summon on screen to remind you of the right technique)
- Variety of activities
- Good music, varied, can choose your favourite genre or just listen to a mix
The niggles:
- American voice that loves to use the word 'awesome' and is super encouraging with some cheesy comments!
- The wire between the wiimote and nunchuck occasionally gets in the way. I'll probably invest in a wireless nunchuck.
- The handles for the resistance band aren't very comfortable on some of the moves. Again, I might invest in a better resistance band/tube.

The problem is, the product is based around the idea of selling you another £10 worth of rubber/plastic/ribbon rubbish to shove in your cupboard.
I've found the way to use this, is to perform many of the exercises shown at your own pace (faster than instructed) and then hit the "skip" menu item to go onto the next thing. Otherwise you just end up standing there, waiting for it to "register" that you've stopped moving. This does mean you don't get a proper score, but to be honest, we're more concerned about getting the workout tho, not a nintendo number.
The voice is annoying, sounds like some american advertising squeaked up gerbil having just breathed in a helium balloon. You can lower or disable the comment frequency. This is important for when you are doing the exercise at the right pace for you, and the gerbil is still saying "go faster".
Most of the exercises rely on the nunchuck/remote being at the right angle in the right direction. It can be annoying getting the orientation right. Once its in the right place, it's more or less ok. I'm using a wireless nunchuck.
A lot of these exercises could be done better just using the remote, or giving the option to use holding two remotes (none of this 'strap the nunchuck round your leg" stuff). Seriously, how many households now have an entire drawer stuffed full of wii accessories ? marketing dream.
The exercises themself, yes, nice variety and work up quite a muscle sweat in the living room.

If you want to mess about with silly games that last seconds and don't raise your heart rate one bit, buy Wii Fit. If you actually want to have structured workouts that challenge you and keep you motivated by being different each day, choose Sports Active. You can put together your own workouts and record what you've eaten and other exercise you've done too.
Each time you encounter a new exercise, you get a demonstration video to watch. The videos are available to watch at any time, but they don't appear automatically after the first time you've done the exercise, so that's very helpful. You can choose the music you workout to, choose between a male and female trainer and customise the character on screen so they better resemble yourself.
Providing you hold the remote and nunchuck correctly and demonstrate good form in the exercises, you shouldn't have any problems with your movements not being picked up and you don't need a lot of room for anything. If you do the 30-day challenge then you can choose whether or not to incorporate the Wii Fit balance board, but it's not in the slightest bit necessary because the game gives you alternatives.
One thing I would say, is that sometimes the lead from the nunchuck can get in the way, so if you have a wireless nunchuck that will make things a little easier (make sure you get an actual wireless nunchuck and not an adapter because you'll still need to insert it into the leg strap). I bought a Mad Catz one and it works just fine.

Forget about this being a game, it's a full-on exercise programme. Unlike the Wii Fit, which is clearly geared more towards the fun aspect of exercising, this crafty little number really does push you in a way that the Wii Fit doesn't.
Feeling brave on my first go, I tried the intense 30 day programme and then nearly dropped dead after about 15 minutes. I'm not an unfit person by any stretch, I cycle 10 miles a day. However, this seems to target pretty much every part of your body that conventional exercising doesn't. I've switched to the easy routines for the time being, just to get accustomed to the more 'gym like' approach, and it's going well.
That's not to say that you should ditch the Wii Fit, as you can use the two in tandem. I tend to do my warm up with Wii Fit with the Super Hula and the Island jog circuit, and then take my weight/BMI. Then it's onto Sports Active for the proper exercise programme, and then back to the Wii Fit for some yoga and balancing; you can really use the two together effectively. However, if I had neither and had to choose one, then it'd be this one.
The only downside is that it doesn't take your weight, and the resistance band supplied is a bit rubbish. I folded it in two for extra resistance and the damn thing split, so I had to cut the split end off and subsequently have a shorter band.. which provides more resistance lol. Anyway, I'll be investing in a better band in the next few days.
How will this square up to Wii Fit Plus when that appears? Well, to be honest, after looking at the previews, I believe that the differences will be as similar as they are now i.e. this pushes you further by quite some stretch, whereas Wii Fit Plus will remain as more of gamey experience. However, only time will tell!
