Revue de presse

The Earth Care Manual, put simply, is fantastic. It is what I have been waiting for for years, and it is what those of us in temperate climates have urgently needed. Patrick's considerable experience in the fields of woodlands and fruit growing shine through especially strongly, but the whole book is rich with vision and experience. What it offers is common sense solutions rooted in the culture and climate of these islands. This book is a clear and unarguable road map to where we need to go, an A-Z to sanity and common sense. Patrick has created a manual with which we can repair this beautiful jewel of a planet which we are fortunate enough to inhabit, and in so doing has given us a truly precious gift. --Rob Hopkins, Co-founder of the Transition Movement

Just occasionally a book is published that fully justifies its title and can even change the reader's perspective on life. This is one of those rare and inspiring landmark events. --The Garden Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society

A visionary, yet practical book. A few sentences in and I realised I was in the company of one of the world's great teachers. Patrick Whitefield writes as if he were speaking directly to you. --Reforesting Scotland

Présentation de l'éditeur

This critically acclaimed and definitive permaculture design book was the inspiration that BBC2's Brigit Strawbridge (of Its Not Easy Being Green) needed to attend her first permaculture design course with Patrick Whitefield, setting her and her family off on a voyage of discovery which is helping to introduce and inspire others. Already hailed in the UK, Europe and America as definitive, and reprinted by popular demand, The Earth Care Manual offers an inspirational yet practical vision of a sustainable future invaluable to those new to the subject as well as to the experienced practitioner. The permaculture movement started in the 1970s as a sustainable alternative to modern industrial agriculture, taking its inspiration from natural ecosystems. It initially placed an emphasis on gardening, with proponents of permaculture since expanding on its principles; addressing all subjects vital to sustainability, from building and community design to food, energy, water, microclimate and shelter. All of these topics and more are addressed in The Earth Care Manual, demonstrating that permaculture is an interconnecting framework linking a diversity of green ideas. Its aims are a low input, high output efficient use of resources, and genuine sustainability. The Earth Care Manual gives a vision of a sustainable future and the practical steps we can take towards it, both large and small, urban and rural. Written by Patrick Whitefield, one of Europes foremost teachers and practitioners of temperate permaculture, it explains in depth how to apply permaculture to any situation, from the smallest of buildings or apartments, to houses, gardens, orchards, farms and woodlands.

I've only had a chance to glance through this and read

snippets, but I'm very impressed. A lot of information well

organized; it's like a textbook for a college level

Permaculture course. Seems comparable to, but easier to

understand and apply, than Mollison's Permaculture Design

Manual. I'm in the PNW US but I think this book will be very

useful here. Only compliant is the climate, etc maps of

britian rather than the US :-)

I just borrowed this book from the library because I was a little scared away by the high price. Now I know that I have to buy it. This is a fantastic book. I'm planning to start a small farm and have been reading about permaculture for a couple of years. If you live in a temperate climate, this is the best book on the subject. It is filled with diagrams and interesting details about how to establish a successful system. There is hardly anything that the book doesn't touch on. If you are a serious home gardener or you are looking to create a more sustainable farm, this book will be a well used resource.

It's really a great book and worth every penny if you're interested in Permaculture in cooler climates.
I was also a bit frightened by the price but it's a BIG book and the informations inside are priceless.
I also tend to say it's better than Mollisons Manual because the way of writing is easier to understand for me (I'm german).
So this is one of the books I will never allow to leave my house. ;-)

Reading time is very precious, but I do enjoy having books over an e reader. So every permaculture book has something I need or something I should remember. This book is no exception, in fact this book should be a close second to the Mollison Designers Manual. It provides sound permaculture steps in a clear easy to read format with a lot of knowledge crammed into one book. It's heavy, like a Designers Manual, so it will not be carried with you everywhere you go. There is also too much information to memorize, so it will become a great reference tool. Possibly better than the Designers Manual as it is more focused on the temperate climate when the Designers Manual covers all climates.
I had never seen the contents of the book before purchasing it, but I thought I would take a chance as it was referenced in the Aranya book contents and also on several website that I trust. While building my reference library, I have a limited amount of money like everyone else, so I plan my purchases carefully. This book has become a great find, with very few copies available in good condition at a reasonable price, I am extremely happy to obtain this one. I am told that Mollison made a state that the output of the yield is only limited by the designers imagination, if this is the case I want all of the ideas I can to obtain that yield and this manual will help.
