I am teaching myself the language and this book is really just... great! It's easy to understand, offers clear examples, activities for practice, and is overall a well constructed way to learn the language. I finally feel like I am making progressive and this book was my best teacher!
Learning Arabic as an English speaker who is decidedly NOT good at learning languages (after years of studying German & Spanish, plus a few months of Italian- all with a professor and academic setting), it's taken time and commitment to learn the basics (i.e. the alphabet)! I cannot rave enough about how this book has helped direct my learning and grow a knowledge of the language.
The guides are very detailed and obvious, giving clear examples of not only what the letters look like, but also how to effectively write them (i.e. where to start, finish, and lift your pen). There is practice space in the book to both trace examples and then practice on your own; however, it is probably a good idea to have your own paper and access to a photocopier if you wish to trace the more complicated symbols more than a couple times.
Presented in a compact and well organized form this book provides an excellent way to learn to read and write Arabic script. I'd highly recommend it for anyone that is looking to polish their skills or learn from scratch. And with practical examples and further practice guides this book will take you well beyond simply writing out the alphabet and numbers.
Like most books with a lot of formatting and a foreign alphabet, it probably won't convert well to a Kindle format. Despite my love of e-readers and all things digitized, this should be purchased as a paperback. It is a small, light book that is easy to carry around as a reference.
I can not recommend it highly enough for a beginning Arabic student.
