Présentation de l'éditeur

For eight bloody years, the Star Kingdom of Manticore and its allies have taken the war to the vastly more powerful People's Republic of Haven, and Commodore Honor Harrington has been in the forefront of that war.

But now Honor has fallen, captured by the Peep Navy, turned over to the forces of State Security ... and executed on the interstellar network's nightly news.

The Manticoran Alliance is stunned and infuriated by Honor's death and grimly resolved to avenge it. Yet their military is over-extended and the People's Republic is poised to take (he offensive once more, this time with a new strategy, new weapons, a new command team, and a whole new determination to win. The war is about to enter a phase of unprecedented ferocity . . . and the Alliance is on the short end of the stick.

But even as powerful Peep fleets hurtle towards their objectives, neither they nor the Alliance are aware of events occurring on a distant, isolated, inescapable prison planet called Hell. For what no one knows, not even State Security, is that Honor Harrington is not dead. She and a handful of her people are trapped on Hell, and determined to disprove the Peep boast that no one can ever escape it. Honor Harrington is going home, and taking her people with her... even if she has to conquer Hell to do it.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Not enough of Honor Harrington and too much of the political machinations behind the scenes! 6 novembre 2015

I am a huge fan of David Weber's Honor Harrington series and this book is, as always, painting a very thorough picture of his "Honorverse!" My only complaint is that it is too thorough a picture. I really don't want to be in on every conversation the "Peeps" have, nor am I terribly interested in the strife and political maneuvering behind the scenes, both in Haven and in Manticore. One has to admire David Weber for being able to create such a detailed picture of his worlds because it makes them very believable, especially since there are such close parallels in our own history. The drawback, for me, is that I don't get enough of Honor. This seems to be getting worse as each volume in this fascinating series keeps expanding. I don't like Dame Lady Harrington to be relegated to almost a footnote. History buffs will probably love these developments but I miss Honor the warrior, therefore 4 stars for being very well written and for all the scenes that detail Honor's role in her breathtaking break-out from Hades, Also four stars rather than five because Weber forced me to buy the next book in the series just to see her return with all the escaped prisoners to home and her loved ones. I wasn't going to because (see ever expanding books with less and less room for Honor) I was determined to make this the last book in this series since Admiral Harrington in a mostly administrative role is not as attractive as the Honor of Obelisk.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 like in real life 12 février 2017

I am one of those readers who likes to learn the character and the environment they operate in gradually, like in real life. As some reviewers state, David Weber goes into details ad nauseum and I agree! But that is how some people like to read also. I am going through the series again for probably the third time and, as usual, by this book I'm getting ad nauseum about all the ad nauseum details. So - I still enjoy the main theme and characters by going through series of pages by simply reading the topic and summary sentences of each paragraph until we get back to a "story". But it does get tiring if you like you stories to move along and develop the characters as you go. I'll probably stop with "Ashes of Victory" as I remember it didn't totally devolve into how many lumps of sugar in the tea and the mental ruminations of everyone on the flag deck including the cockroach in the corner.
3.0 étoiles sur 5 In this one he bores you very nearly completely to death and then continues boring exposition through the entire book 13 juillet 2015

Weber's strength is coming up with strong characters that you care about. I'd never have read the previous 8 books without them. Usually what he does in one of these Honor Harrington books is he bores you just half to death with an introductory chapter or three of long drawn out interminable talk talk talk exposition since the last book. In this one he bores you very nearly completely to death and then continues boring exposition through the entire book. The story is broken into books and if you take my advice you'll skip the even numbered ones until the very end, those are the ones with boring exposition. I really really don't care how the governments work or who hates who or how wracked with guilt characters are for their dead wives. I want action, I want space ships and I wanted to see more of the story on the prison planet. Although the synopsis makes it sound like Harrington and crew's escape from Hell was the major story of the book its at best the THIRD story. This is by far the most boring and worst of the series thus far and has me seriously doubting if I want to continue. Certainly not at $7 a book, Amazon will have to discount severely to keep me reading...
5.0 étoiles sur 5 I liked it 24 avril 2017

It's not the best in the series, but it's close... yes Weber goes into some details that (maybe) aren't needed. When that happens, I just start skimming (speed reading). That happened a lot less in this book.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Horatio Hornblower syfy at its very best 25 janvier 2015

This series will hook you fast if your genre is military sci-fi. Patterned after the Horatio Hornblower tales, David Weber forwards the action plot into a distant future and enemies aplenty. Honor Harrington is an incredibly likable hero. The jams she gets into and out of are edge of the seat serial classics.

Enjoy the story! It’s surely one of the very best serials in the genre.
