Revue de presse

"You have to be brave to be this hilarious, and this sweetly romantic. And of course, a lot of talent helps. Egghead is a remarkable piece of writing!" --Jack Handey, author of The Stench of Honolulu and the Deep Thoughts series

"Like Walt Whitman, Bo Burnham has made the transition from an internet comedy sensation to a soulful poet. No, not that Walt Whitman. A different guy." --Conan O'Brien

"I would love Bo Burnham's hilarious book even if he weren't my son." --Judd Apatow

Présentation de l'éditeur

A strange and charming collection of hilariously absurd poetry, writing, and illustration from one of today's most popular young comedians...

EGGHEAD: Or, You Can't Survive on Ideas Alone

Bo Burnham was a precocious teenager living in his parents' attic when he started posting material on YouTube. 100 million people viewed those videos, turning Bo into an online sensation with a huge and dedicated following. Bo taped his first of two Comedy Central specials four days after his 18th birthday, making him the youngest to do so in the channel's history. Now Bo is a rising star in the comedy world, revered for his utterly original and intelligent voice. And, he can SIIIIIIIIING!

In EGGHEAD, Bo brings his brand of brainy, emotional comedy to the page in the form of off-kilter poems, thoughts, and more. Teaming up with his longtime friend, artist, and illustrator Chance Bone, Bo takes on everything from death to farts in this weird book that will make you think, laugh and think, "why did I just laugh?"

I hate you for making this book. There is no number and no summary, so I can't find my favorite poems easily. And I'm really mad at the cover.
This book is probably from Hell, and I probably sold my soul to Satan to buy it. You're a pain, Bo.
Yours, truly.

I never write reviews for products, so this is a first but I felt some weird sort of obligation to do this. I've been admiring Bo Burnham's work for a few months now, so I'm not a super dedicated, long term fan by any means. I found a few of his standup videos a couple months ago and was so impressed by the depth of his comedy and even more so by the fact that he's in his early 20s. I find that people give him grief for being young and for coming from the internet but if you actually listen to his comedy, you can tell that it's very well thought out and that he's a very smart person, well beyond his years. So I bought the book, expecting it to be hilarious and well thought out, and thats exactly what it is. What impresses me the most is the variation that exists between the poems, not all of them are going to make you laugh. Some of them are pretty deep, and deal with serious issues and what I love is that he doesn't try to make you laugh every second you are reading it. He reaches this amazing level of introspection that is so palpable and relatable (at least for me) that blows my mind. That being said, you will laugh when you read this book. There are plenty of poems that had me doubled over in intense laughter. Bo's very talented and very dedicated, and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next, whatever it is I trust it will be spectacular. So basically, buy the book (it's good).

HASH(0x99a08ed0) étoiles sur 5 Perfectly balanced book of poetry 20 octobre 2013

I absolutely love this book. I'd like to think that my personal bias for Bo Burnham (following and adoring his comedy since the youtube days) doesn't have anything to do with my recommendation for anyone and everyone to get a hold of a copy of this book.

The balance between silly, laugh-out-loud funny, disturbing, and good poetry is astonishing. Even some of the disturbing or silly poetry contains excellent use of literary devices such as alliteration, rhyming, irony, satire, etc.

I think it is inevitable that a comparison between "Egghead" and Shell Silverstein books will be drawn. Whether you think Silverstein is better because he is a true poet and not a comedian with a poetry book or not, it can't be denied that there is an uncanny resemblance between the two. The works have many similar qualities (writing style and illustration) and are both excellent works of poetry. However, what's special about Bo's book is that it's dirtier and more appropriate for an older age. The description in the information is really very true, " that will make you think, laugh and think, 'why did I just laugh?'"

And lastly, the illustration puts the book over the top for me. Each drawing is so detailed and well done, and really adds something to the book. I have very high praise for Chance Bone. And of course for Bo, for once again being so incredibly talented.

HASH(0x99a0e1a4) étoiles sur 5 Shel Silverstein for adults... 5 octobre 2013

...and thoughtful youths... who can handle a "dirty" word or ten... or fifty. Ahem. Yes, I know I abuse ellipses. Anyway, getting right to it, I really love this book (so far). It reminds me so much of those Shel Silverstein books I used to read as a kid. I preordered this book and just got it today. I'm only halfway through but gosh, even if the rest of the book is somehow awful, the former half will more than compensate. Seriously though, if the latter half is trash (or somehow significantly more amazing), I will come back and edit this review.

The book is just so funny and fun and sometimes even deep and thoughtful and poignant, like the poem about the Stutterer. Mr. Burnham has a real way with, understanding of, and (ostensibly anyway) passion for, English words. He's basically a wordsmith and a damned funny one too. I'm so glad that, even though it isn't always free, he's willing to share his brain-gems with the world via multiple mediums. 4 not 5 stars because I wish there were some short narratives included... but maybe it's not fair to deduct a star just because the book isn't EXACTLY what I imagined... and maybe it is! 4 stars is very good! I would highly recommend this book and in fact am getting one for my younger brother who is a new freshman in college and finding himself endlessly bored these days.
