5,0 sur 5 étoiles Indispensible Elgar
Avis laissé aux États-Unis le 28 octobre 2015
I have long known of these recordings but never had the cash together to buy them. As is so often the case with composers conducting their own music, Elgar has a unique and wonderful way with his own works. These recordings have been a revelation and I find myself kicking myself for not getting hold of them earlier.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Elgar by Elgar. He should know what he's doing!
Avis laissé au Canada le 15 mars 2014
There's a school of thought that composers tend to make the worst interpreters and conductors of their own music. While some composers have been pretty lame (unfortunately, a few spring to mind!) there's probably no one better suited to take the tempo of the piece, and interpret the subtleties therein, better than the conductor. So, it's always interesting to listen to the composer's own take on their music. Sometimes it's a disappointment, because we're used to hearing what others think the composer should have done (and sometimes either left vague or simply ignore what the composer wrote). A case in point is Nimrod from Engima Variations: we are so used to the dirge-like Nimrod of today, that hearing Elgar or Boult take the piece much faster causes us to think the composer didn't know what they were doing on the podium!

OK, enough rant. Elgar conducting Elgar. How can you not want to listen? The recording quality, considering the age of the recordings, is acceptable. As long as you go in knowing the history of these recordings, you won't be too disappointed, even though the quality really is poor by any current standard. No, you won't get state-of-the-art full-frequency range recordings from this box. You won't get stereo on any CD, even! All these recordings are mono, most have hiss and limited dynamic and frequency range, and most will not show off your stereo in any way, shape or form. But you wouldn't expect that from this box, anyway. While the remastering to the digital domain has been done with great care, obviously, these recordings do all show their age and limitations of the source material. But, you're here for the music...

And in that sense, it's a revelation. The way Elgar reads his own compositions and conducts the various orchestras is amazing. Whether you're stuck with modern interpretations or not, it's interesting and informative to hear these pieces in this format. Elgar does a good job with all his works in this box: the symphonies, Enigma, Dream of Gerontius, and the various smaller pieces scattered over the nine CDs. This is an education in Elgar's music, and an insight into his compositional mind (if you want to get cerebral). Nimrod is one of my favorite pieces, and I've heard the arguments for decades about how Elgar intended it to be played. Well, here you can actually HEAR how he wanted it playing, and it's not so radically different from my favorite Bernstein recording of the pieces. And that's what this box will bring you: Elgar letting you know how he wanted his music to sound! Can you imagine if we had this sort of legacy for other composers?

Would you buy this box and your one and only recording of Enigma, Wand, Dream, or Symphony 2? No way! But, if you love Elgar and want to hear how Elgar did it, back in the late twenties and early thirties, this is a must-have. At the price, it's an inexpensive history lesson on Elgar and his genius. It's also a living testament to the audio world back then, and how it has managed to survive close to 100 years, and still hold us spellbound, recording quality none-the-less.

I gave this box five stars for its historical impact, not for the recordings or interpretations. For the latter two, the scale would be lower. But for what it is, this is a superb box at a decent price. Elgar on Elgar: definitive in more than one way!

5,0 sur 5 étoiles England's Greatest Composer Conducts and Plays His Own Music.
Avis laissé au Royaume-Uni le 23 avril 2011
As well as being of enormous historical interest and value, Elgar's electrical recordings of his own music remain amongst the very finest ever made. The technical quality of this reissue is quite amazing and, apart from the mono sound, the listener has to make very few allowances for it. The various orchestras perform to a high standard under Elgar's baton and the, then usual, use of portamento is never distracting and adds greatly to the effectiveness of these performances. Elgar's tempi are much faster than we are used to today but, for example, his readings of the symphonies and Enigma Variations have a rightness about them that is totally convincing.

Almost all of the composers major orchestral works are here together with extracts from Gerontius and The Music Makers recorded 'live' at the Albert Hall and during the Three Choirs Festival in Hereford. Also included are the fascinating piano improvisations Elgar made in 1929 and which, of course, were never intended for commercial release. More than mere doodling, these provide a wonderful and unique insight into his compositional technique.

We hear Elgar's speaking voice during a rehearsal extract from the second symphony and introducing Land of Hope and Glory at the opening of the Abbey Road studios. The final disc ends with some orchestral extracts from Caractacus supervised by Elgar by 'phone from his sick bed a month before his death and both 'Mina' - a charming late piece descriptive of his beloved cairn terrrier and the Coronation March conducted by Landon Ronald - the man who persuaded Elgar to record for the first time in 1914.

This is a wonderful set which, as well as including such well-known and, justly often reissued, recordings such as the Violin Concerto with Menuhin and Cello Concerto with Beatrice Harrison, contains many very fine performances which have been out of the catalogue for far too long.

The notes on the recordings by Jerrold Northrop Moore are excellent but I would have preferred them to be more extensive and could have well done without the very interesting, but inessential, essays by Anthony Griffith and Andrew Walter on 78rpm recording techniques and digital remastering procedures.

One of the few absolutely essential purchases for all lovers of English music, this set can be recommended without reservation.

Avis laissé au Japon le 9 août 2013
