Description du produit

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Musical! 8 novembre 2015

One of my favourite musicals (the other one is Tanz der Vampire).
About the Cast: Maya sings beautifully as usual. Her voice is powerful and influential. (I like Boote in der Nacht the best.) And I love Serkan Kaya's voice - soooo amazing. He's a surprisingly likeable Lucheni, not sure what I feel about it. As the character who introduces the whole story, it's good for the audience to be able to sympathy with him a bit, but in history that guy is not actually a likeable man. Of course you can always argue a hundred years of being dead and actually get to know the life story of someone he had killed really changed that person - that's how I understand it. Carsten Lepper had a completely different approach which is much more despicable, but I think is closer to the real character in history. Máté is an acceptable Tod. His voice was not in the best condition and couldn't reach some high notes. He was really tired in akt 2, shown especially in die Schatten werden länger. His version of der Tod is fierce and passionate, attractive and scary at the same time.(Again completely different from Uwe Kröger's version.) I do like this portrait of the character. Else Ludwig did a great job as Sophie - the audience can easily sympathy with her, but at the same time not agreeing at all with her deeds, which is really difficult to achieve by the actor. André Bauer's Franz Joseph was nice - a good man, not very smart, bad in political skills, in a dilemma between his mother ad wife - and his son, loved them all, failed them all, lost them all. Sad story. Fritz Schmid also had a nice voice. Kerstin Ibald is so lovely as Gräfin Esterhazy! Sisi's father was also a likable person. Love Wie Du.
About the DVD: Good quality. No subtitles - not a huge problem for me as I've listened to the 2001 cast recording over and read the libretto with translations, but can be really inconvenient for those who don't know German and haven't watched the musical before.

The story was already very compelling, but Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay did a masterful job interpreting the history and bringing it to life on the stage. What I liked most was that the characters weren't stick thin portrayals of the real people. They made mistakes, they weren't aware of things and they were very emotional, which I loved. Elisabeth could've easily been just a poor victim of some horrible mental abuse at the hands of her mother-in-law and, to a lesser extent, her foolish husband. But no, they had it so that you knew that she had some flaws. Mind you, they were minor faults in comparison to what she ended up dealing with.

The sets and costumes are absolutely gorgeous! Reinhard Heinrich was in charge of the wonderful costumes and Erich Dorfinger was responsible for the sumptuous set designs. I loved the dream world quality to everything.

Now, I don't know much of the story, I've never read about Empress Elisabeth (which I will remedy as soon as possible), but I have read that the Kaiser did in fact love his wife and that shows. But he was in thrall to his mother to such an extent as to let her hurt Sisi. That seems pretty stupid of him, (Spoiler alert) especially since she keeps leaving because of it and he doesn't seem to change his behavior after that. It's a shame he lost so many of his relatives, started World War I, and created the foundation for a future Nazi party (I think?). It makes me question whether I'm even supposed to like this character, because I do feel very sorry for him. André Bauer played him very well with this certain amount of detached sentiment.

The narrator, Luigi Lucheni, played by Serkan Kaya, was amazing! I expected not to like him and he was so funny and I connected with him in a way that I couldn't connect with the royals. Another stand out was Johann Ebert who played the young version of Crown Prince Rudolf and he was so cute and adorable! Also, an awesome performer for such a young thing.

Máté Kamarás was fantastic as Der Tod, or the personification of Death. He has such an unusual voice and an incredible stage presence. Cold but sexy, too.

The music is nothing short of amazing! So many great songs: 'Der Letzte Tanz', 'Ich Gehor Nur Mir', 'Elisabeths Schlafzimmer', 'Nichts, Nichts, Gar Nichts', 'Der Schatten Werden Langer', 'Eine Terrasse Bei Cap Martin', and 'An Deck Der Sinkenden Welt'.

If I had one criticism to this dvd, it would be that every time a scene ended, they would cut away to the audience and every time I felt like it was taking me out of the performance a little bit. And I found that annoying. Don't break the spell damnit!

I totally recommend this DVD if you enjoy musicals and don't mind just watching and listening to a foreign language because there weren't any subtitle options. The music is fantastic and a feast for the eyes. I hope that one day this is translated into English so I can understand it a bit more clearly. I would like to get a copy of the performance that happened in Essen, Germany in 2001, so I can see my man (Michael Shawn Lewis), as well as Pia Douwes and Jesper Tyden! But until I can scrounge one up, this one is perfect. You can see more reviews at my blog: [...]

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Musical--5 stars; Discs--3 stars 28 octobre 2015

Musical--5 stars; I LOVE IT!!! Discs--3 stars for USA because: NO ENGLISH subtitles; plus it only plays on our portable DVD player and on the Mac; neither give the audio quality justice; the discs do not play on any Bluray-combined-DVD (nor PS3) player! The cost was high without those!!! The pleasure added, however, of this Live Edition is the Special Feature cast interviews, which ARE translated into English! These were thoroughly enjoyable and added greatly to the appreciation of this beautifully performed musical. The musical story is very close to the life story of Queen Elisabeth, so I was able to follow the gist of it. (Once my daughter, who is very familiar with the songs, translated many of the words for me as we watched, then I completely enjoyed the experience. Not everyone has that privilege.)

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Elisabeth the musical 2 novembre 2012

If I could give this musical more then five stars I would. More like ten stars. This german musical is incredialbe. I absolutly adore it. It's better than Phantom of the opera in NY. (Though that is a tough one to beat and was first on my top ten list until elsiabeth.) First of all the music... ah the music... is.. MARVELOUS. So many good songs like Der Letzte Tanz, Ich gehor nur mir, Die Schatten werden langer, and wenn ich Tanzen will. To name some of the main songs. I do not speak German, but, youtube has given me an english translation and after being able to watch Elisabeth in a language I could understand i was able to figure out the plot somewhat. It's sort of unique because there's a love triangle between Elisabeth empress of Austria, Franz Joseph emperor of Austria ( I think.), and (ready for this...) Death. The second I heard that, I was imediately interested because I've never seen death portrayed in this way. Especially not in a love trianle. So that set Elisabeth apart from other musicals for me. But it's a bit of a historical fiction as well in that the musical portrays elisabeth's life. If you ever get a chance go see this musical live. I sadly will not due to that fact that it's too expensive to travel to germany. If not buy it now on amazon. You won't regret it. It's well worth the money.

If you think you knew Sisi, check out Elisabeth, the Musical. One finds a historically different twist to the charming Sisi of the films. The music and lyrics are dramatic and relate the storyline in a manner that brings the viewer into the Austrian court. Not to mention all of the lyrics that can be used to instruct German grammar and culture in the word language classroom. The actors portray their characters well. It is an incredibly engaging production.
