Présentation de l'éditeur

From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island was the gateway to a new life in the United States for millions of immigrants. In later years, the island was deserted, the buildings decaying. Ellis Island was not restored until the 1980s, when Americans from all over the country donated more than $150 million. It opened to the public once again in 1990 as a museum. Learn more about America's history, and perhaps even your own, through the story of one of the most popular landmarks in the country.

Biographie de l'auteur

Patricia Brennan Demuth is the author of Who Is Bill Gates?, What Was Pearl Harbor?, and Who Was Laura Ingalls Wilder?

We are now just reading this for homeschool. Great information, but not boring for a 3rd grader. There is some wonderful black and white photos inside.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Can lead reader astray because doesn't always tell the whole story 11 juin 2016

Generally good, but some things need more information. Illustration on page 22 shows Hungary as a country from which immigrants came. However, before World War I, Hungary meant the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire that included what after WWI were Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and other southern and eastern European countries. People are misled about their ancestors' origins because of only Hungary being on the passenger manifests. On page 50, it wasn't just single women who might have trouble leaving Ellis Island, but also women traveling with their children to meet their husbands who already were in the U.S. A male relative or sponsor didn't have "to come for them", but did have to assure they had enough money to get to their final destination. I know, because this happened to my maternal grandmother and her 3 children in 1906. They only place the officials had to house these women and children while they waited for permission was the hospital island.

As I have stated before I love this line of books. I use them in tutoring sessions for kids who need help in reading. They are very high interest and are good for learning vocabulary, since many words are defined within the context of the sentences. Lots of interesting facts.

Love this series - very informative but not boring with real pictures. Read before you visit a historic site like Ellis Island.
