Revue de presse

"Brilliant ... I was gripped ... most ingenious" (Brian Aldiss)

"Wingrove is a master storyteller and 'Empire of Time' is a gripping epic that slingshots the reader across human history alongside characters enthralled by their own passions." (Michael Cobley)

"It’s immense fun for anyone who likes their SF writ really large" (SFX)

"[an] impeccable sense of setting ... The Empire of Time could be the beginning of something brilliant: Blackout meets Bond in a relentless race war Wingrove depicts with deftness and deference" (Tor.com)

Présentation de l'éditeur

There is only the war.

Otto Behr is a German agent, fighting his Russian counterparts across three millennia, manipulating history for moments in time that can change everything.

Only the remnants of two great nations stand and for Otto, the war is life itself, the last hope for his people.

But in a world where realities shift and memory is never constant, nothing is certain, least of all the chance of a future with his Russian love...

I hate to give a book a bad review when there are so few other reviews available; my tastes are not everyone's tastes. I also hate to give a bad review on an author that I'd give 5 stars to for other books he's written. However...

This book is not good. If you're looking for a time travel story that makes sense, you will not find it here. It goes well beyond the creation of paradox into a meandering, reactive narrative that plods forward without plan. I did enjoy a couple parts -- the narrator's interaction with Hitler was interesting as well as the time he spent with the Mechanists, however those were very tiny gems in this colossal heap of a novel.

Wingrove's vision is a clandestine group of time traveler's from our future working to preserve the German culture from the Russians. The narrator is supposed to be one of their best agents yet he's continually making emotional decisions that threaten to collapse everything the German's have worked for. To make matters worse, Wingrove constantly violates the rules he's created for time travel making the story progression seem completely random. For example, sometimes it's possible to go back and fix something that happened, but depending on plot requirements often there's no "time" to do so. Sometimes once the past has changed, everyone immediately forgets what happened in the cancelled timeline, at other times characters hang on to the alternate memories.

I finished this book. Got halfway through the sequel before giving up. I will not be picking it up to finish -- it's a complete waste of time. I can only assume the five star reviews for this book are from people that didn't read it or are friends of DW.

This book is OK but I have to take a break every couple of chapters. A very complex plotline, hopping around a lot. The author could learn from Poul Anderson time patrol books how to make fewer time hops do the job! Lively in places but need to take breaks.

Loved it. Couldn't put it down. Seamless handling of time paradoxes and skillful shifting of perceptual position so the tragedy reveals itself, along with the beauty.

Extremely complex, but very logic and well thought, this series will be regarded as the definitive take on time travel and time travel paradoxes. I love what Wingrove is doing with the past and with the alternate histories, but what really shines in The Empire of Time is the future, where everything collides and from where everything begins.
