4.0 étoiles sur 5 Dated, but a good book 25 juillet 2013

TIME magazine covered the story of the Main Line Murders back in June and July, 1979. A sensitive and gullible English teacher is murdered and her children, who were with her during that weekend, cannot be found anywhere. This account is a more personal account of the relationship of William Bradfield, a charismatic Engish teacher, and Susan Reinhert, another teacher who has fallen in love with him. The trouble is Mr. Bradfield has a habit of juggling women and manipulating them for his own convenience. He also has a dark ally in his principal, Jay Smith. This true story occurs at Upper Merion High School in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. This account is a different perspective from "Echoes in the Darkness," which is a less personal account of the incident focusing on a larger sociological perspective.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 It makes me sad thinking about this case. And enraged. 29 octobre 2013

So many lives destroyed. How evil can one be to another? This book takes a more journalistic approach to the events. What the book lacks in the police procedural angle of Echoes in the Darkness, Engaged to Murder possesses a more sympathetic ear to the victims. A very well written account of the tragic events. I imagine there's evidence that will never see the light of day, at least to the public. And no closure for the victim's families.

Having read Echoes of Darkness and Principal Suspect I felt compelled to read Engaged to Murder. The book gave me more insight of the personality of William Bradfield. I'm more inclined to believe that he did commit the murders with the age old motive of money. I didn't realize how much he was in debt until reading this book. I think Bradfield used Jay Smith's bizarre behavior and conviction of robbery to set him up for the murders. Still a part of me believes that maybe Jay was involved. I just don't know. I really would have liked to read and know more about Joanne Aitken. There's still the unanswered questions about what happened to Jay's daughter and son-in-law. Short of a death bed confession none of us will ever know.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 WEAKEST OF THE THREE BOOKS ON SUBJECT 31 octobre 2007

This book was written in the same time frame as "Echoes In The Darkness", which means it misses one-third of the entire Story.

The strength of the book is more in-depth information on William Bradfield and the mystery girlfriend, Joanne Aitken.

Since Bradfield died in 1998 and Smith maintained his innocence since being freed, by the Pa. Supreme Court in 1992. Apparenty, the judges did not view the police and district attorney withholding and hiding evidence that probably would have helped Smith during his murder trial very kindly.

Since, Jay Smith died of heart failure, on May 12, 2009. it appears the question about what happened to Susan Reinert and her children will remain a mystery.

Unless, Joanne decides to talk.
