I enjoyed this book, one of several I have read by the same author. The history behind this story is what makes it, the clearances were brutal and many scots didn't survive the passage to Canada. The story itself felt a little overlong around the deer hunts but I realised the context by the last chapters of the book and what it had prepared the reader for.
A love story crossing the decades and who knows what will follow.

A good atmospheric read as with all the Peter May Novels and it kept me completely hooked right to the end. However I found the end disappointing, it just, well, ended as if he'd run out of good ideas. The murderer and his motives seemed somewhat trite and implausible after all the build up, as if he'd just been pulled out of a hat conveniently to end the novel. I'd still thoroughly recommend this novel, though, great mystery, it's just the ending that disappoints.
