Mes titres préférés : " I've got a reason", "Hot house baby", "Bootleg woman", "Gun shy", "The feeling's right", "Rolene".

A solid effort from Moon Martin. Back in 1979 this album was a classic of the new wave mouvement. Songs such as "HOT HOUSE BABY" and "ROLENE " pack an emotional punch. If you liked Moon Martin's "SHOTS FROM A COLD NIGHTMARE" you will certainly enjoy this release. Moon Martin is one of my favorites from this era.

John "Moon" Martin earned his recording contract the old fashioned way; he duked it out in several unsuccessful bands (even releasing albums with a group called Southwind), got his songs placed with prominent artists like Mink Deville and Robert Palmer, and finally found his moment. Unfortunately, he never got the huge break his songs were worthy of. This reissue is the only time any of his solo albums have made it to single CD (and his remaining three Capitol albums "Street Fever," "Mystery Ticket" and "Shots from A Cold Nightmare," are are listed as coming soon on this CD's advertisement slip sleeve. one can hope!) and "Escape From Domination" was his finest hour.

In fact, his best known song and sole top 40 single, "Rolene" (Billbaord #30) is also here. Martin's interesting style, sort of a New-Wave Buddy Holly with rockabilly leanings and a keen sense of pop, is at its best here. "Escape" was produced sparingly by Craig Leon (The Ramones, Willie Alexander), with a live feel. It makes the AC/DC chords that open "Rolene" kind of surprising (albeit not as loud as the Aussies, but still rocking) and the brevity of the songs - all hovering around the 3:30 mark - expected. Rachel Sweet, once being groomed as a New Wave Linda Ronstadt, chose "I've Got a Reason" for all these reason. Sweet, stark and hooky, Martin should have had substantially bigger success.

"Escape" is also darker and more fleshed out, production-wise, than the debut. His steady touring band, The Ravens, gave the LP a tight sound. Other than the addition of new-wavey synths, the sound and songs are similar to the debut. (In addition, one of my fave artists, Jude Cole - "A View from 3rd Street" - was a bandmate.) Martin's appearance (think of John Denver crossed with Elvis Costello) was also attracting attention, making some of the edgier songs ("I've Got A Reason" and "Bootleg Woman") garner positive comparisons to the likes of EC and Nick Lowe. It made me wish Lowe had been at the boards for a Martin CD...now that would have been a match! As it stands, Moon Martin is an interesting cult item, one that I won't part with (and my autographed "Street Fever" letter is a prized possession). Now that you can find this (and I hope, the rest of his OOP catalog soon!) grab one.

You remember "Rolene". It's that catchy song with a strong beat that wormed its way into your mind back in the day. You could never find it afterwards because like all of Moon Martin's albums, it went out of print. That's tragic but Culture Factory is doing something about it. If you haven't heard "Rolene" you've at least heard two songs he wrote (and recorded) that became hits for others--"Bad Case of Loving You" (Robert Palmer) and "Cadillac Walk" (Mink DeVille)but Moon recorded them first.

Moon Martin has a tenor not too dissimiliar from Marshall Crenshaw (although Moon's voice isn't quite as rich or versatile IMHO)and a great sense on how to best arrange his material (for example the Robert Palmer remake of "Bad Case" is very, very similiar although Palmer makes it his own on his album).

The reissue of "Escape From Domination" arrives in a miniature replica of the LP sleeve (including the weird cover with the aliens in the background). We get a full Moon here--10 tracks all of them strong.

The good news is that this is back in print and the mastering although it is a bit bright, is pretty good (although those sensitive to compression may want to be aware that there was some compression applied but the album is decidedly NOT brickwalled). The album has been remastered to 16 bit from 24 bit files so be aware this isn't a high def SACD but it does sound quite nice for a 16 bit CD.

Culture Factgory deserves a full moon salute for making sure that this album has arrived and is back in print. This is good stuff. I do wish that we got some bonus tracks (even if the whole point of the album is to replicate the original album)such as demos, outtakes (I don't recall any b-sides for the "Rolene" single but I could be wrong).

Recommended.

One of my all-time favorite "albums." (I still have the vinyl edition and the 8-track! No, not for sale... Thanks for asking.) Moon has it down to a science; raw emotion confided in you with a straight face and without pausing to breathe. Clever lyrics will keep you smiling. "Bootleg Woman" takes you along for a breakneck ride. You will have so much fun - even when you are all choked up!

I'm going to tailor this review toward the 2012 hi-res re-releases of his first three LP's, "Shots From a Cold Nightmare", "Escape From Domination" and "Street Fever". That would ass-u-me you the reader know of the greatness of Moon Martin and are considering paying the full re-issue price for the improved sound quality as you know they are classic power-pop/rock records of the day. Without getting all audiophile-snobby here and risk anyone not buying these, they are a VAST improvement over any of the re-releases and compilations put out by EMI/various Euro labels over the years-especially the first EMI one from 1999 with audible tape warbles and speed changes on the transfers!. The packaging here is classy though not collector grade. There are no bonus tracks, out-takes etc, (I was hoping at least "Havana Moon" from the Euro Street Fever LP would be included), but again I applaud the effort and overall execution. These are by far the best CD versions available of these classic LP's, the sound quality (they're bright to say the least but manageable and not compressed to death although it's noticable) to a fan who doesn't have the ability to rip their own hi res versions from pristine vinyl should be worth it.

But with that said I do question the target audience here. Most true fans know the earlier CD releases sucked, so we either ripped vinyl, found someone who did and got a copy, or played with the earlier CD reissues the best we could. I would think that even one extra track or some liner notes from Moon, or Jude Cole, or any of the Artists who covered his songs would make those of us die-hard fans who own all the bootleg concerts, fixed the audio ourselves, etc... buy it for the new packaging alone. But we are in the vast minority-

For those who don't know about Moon-if you like Power Pop, fantastic minor chord hooks, and stories about the great ones who inexplicably should've made it big but didn't, here's one that was hiding in plain sight for ya.
Search out his out-dated but insightful website to get some of the story and thank me later...BUY THESE RECORDS~

Enjoy!
