HASH(0x9376045c) étoiles sur 5 Hypnotic soulful masterpiece~Bravo Evie Sands! 11 septembre 2004
Par Bradly Briggs - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Evie Sands for certain the most brilliant singer/songwriter ever to be completely overlooked by the Music Industry...not so by fans or fellow artists Barbra Streisand, Karen Carpenter, Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey or Freda Payne who recorded covers of Evie Sands great original songs, yet Evie easily always does definitive versions of her great songbook making them so deserving to be heard. "Estate Of Mind" is a brilliant work on many different levels, Evie never sounded better or more inspired as she does a stunning range of great songs all performed and arranged to perfection. Hot rocking opener "A Woman's Work Is Never Done" written specially for Evie by album producers Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter, they clearly have a great feel for what is right for their amazing singer/songwriter in every way! Exotic & sensual Evie original "Love In The Afternoon" is a highly pleasurable listening experience that given any airplay at all would have become a huge hit. A hot sexy rocker with a haunting vocal make "You Brought The Woman Out Of Me" another winner in a satisfying collection filled with them...deeply soulful glorious vocal featured in haunting ballad "Take It Or Leave It" is stunningly backed by inspired keyboard work that is great thoughtout this mesmerizing collection. "Call Me Home Again" is another soulful passionate ballad then hot rocker "One Thing On My Mind" is so riveting it would have gone to #1 in a flash if given deserved airplay. Numerous singles were released but none given radio exposure, had radio support happened this amazing collection of tremendous performances would have put "Estate Of Mind" on par with masterworks like "Dusty In Memphis", sadly few know who this great singer/songwriter is because of lack of exposure...listen to painful longing in the touching Evie Sands classic original "Yesterday Can't Hurt Me", weep listening to this extraordinary soulful gem that the Music Industry has not given this remarkable talented singer/songwriter her just due. Evie Sands returned sounding fresh & inspired after being away twenty years, most recent "Women In Prison" is another classic set of originals featuring an artist still in brilliant peak form. Another hot rocking cooker that would have been a monster hit is the sensual hot scorching "I Love Makin' Love To You", this is magical musical seduction at its finest! A trip to the country is the beautifully illuminating "Early Morning Sunshine", romance blissful in "(Am I) Crazy 'Cause I Believe" featuring a great bongo player who is clearly inspired by the amazing musical surroundings. Brilliant unreleased bonus track the exhuberant "Music Man" features a great David Foster keyboard flowing through a masterful arrangement, amazing this stirring and unique classic was never released as this riveting anthem would have been another huge hit for the peerless singer...wildly soulful take on Stevie Wonder "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" is a hot rocking version that for certain would make Stevie Wonder himself smile with approval. Hypnotic & intoxicating "You Can Do It" flows with great rhythm framing a magnificent vocal that anyone who loves a great singer in a divine setting will fall in love with this one, Evie Sands magnificent vocal soars in a swirling mind-blowing arrangement that demands repeated play! Closing this incomparable masterpiece collection is a rousing salute to Motown, killer version of Smokey Robinson "The Way You Do The Things You Do" is a stunning hot rocking cooker returning the stellar singer to her sixties roots in grand fashion! Since those great musical sixties, Evie Sands has been one of the most consistently brilliant singer/songwriters possessing a blistering supremely soulful voice yet strangely has been totally overlooked, truly this phenomenal talent is an "Unsung" legendary musical icon...DO NOT MISS THIS CLASSIC, notice price of this masterpiece soaring like the fantastic singer's insanely great voice filled with passionate soulful urgency that is unforgettable...Bravo Evie Sands!

Bradley Briggs' review is perfect and I'd like to add that Evie Sands had a minor hit in 1975[#50 Billboard Hot 100 Singles Pop Chart]with her highly acclaimed "45" single "I LOVE MAKIN' LOVE TO YOU" in various markets across the USA. [Even Karen Carpenter, inspired by Evie's version, recorded an unreleased version in the late 70's which has yet to see the light of day.]I still recall the excitement this single created, how it burned up the radio airwaves here in Houston and I have my treasured copy of this incredibly sexy and fiery performance of Evie Sands ever captured on vinyl. It's great to have her albums available again, just to hear her soulful voice - these reissues are worth their weight in gold and not to be missed. I also highly recommend the RED BIRD STORY CD BOX SET(4 discs)Charly Records British import if you can locate a copy, featuring every "45" the early 1960's label recorded, hit or non-hit, including Evie's classics "I CAN'T LET GO" - "TAKE ME FOR A LITTLE WHILE", plus her rowdy, rousin', ass stompin' grown up chick anthem "RUN HOME TO YOUR MAMA", which more than made her labelmates the Shangri-Las sound like fluffy teen queens in comparison...too few sides she waxed for that label as a very young girl. Miss Sands deserved much better than the music business allowed her, yet, it's a miracle we are able to still find her recordings on the market after so many years.

HASH(0x937608e8) étoiles sur 5 Evie Sands releases her eclectic album "Estate Of Mind" 19 novembre 2014
Par Perverted Alchemist - Publié sur Amazon.com
Brooklyn, New York native Evelyn "Evie" Sands had one of the most heartbreaking stories in the music industry. As talented as she was with her voice and songwriting duties, she couldn't catch a break. When she was about to, other artists became famous from songs that originated with her. She was the protégé of Atlantic staff writers/producers Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller. She recorded one of their songs "Take Me For A Little While", but her song made it into the offices of Chess Records- where singer Jackie Ross had a hit with the song. A couple of years later, another song she recorded "I Can't Let Go" became a hit for The Hollies. Shortly after, she recorded the song "Angel Of The Morning", but the label folded by the time the single was released (The song later became a signature song for country singer Juice Newton in 1981). In 1970, she moved to A&M Records for the release of the album "Any Way That You Want Me" and endured a shelved album for Buddah Records in 1971. She then decided to go on hiatus to focus on being a songwriter. She revived her career after a five year period of dormancy to record for Capitol subsidiary Haven Records.

In 1975, she released her album "Estate Of Mind"- which was produced by Dennis Lambert & Brian Potter (The Four Tops, Tavares, Glen Campbell)- who also wrote a few tracks as well. Though her desire for success was dwarfed by label issues, Evie certainly didn't make it any easier with her music- which was, admittedly, difficult to categorize. She moved through rock and roll, jazz, rhythm and blues and pop as if it were second nature. She starts off the album with the hard rocker about the woes of an ultra-busy girlfriend "A Woman's Work Is Never Done". She sings about midday sex on the ballad "Love In The Afternoon", while thanking a reformed bad boy on "You Brought The Woman Out Of Me". She desires romance on "One Thing On My Mind" (Which would later be covered by The Ebonys, Linda Clifford and Phyllis Hyman while also being sampled on "We Rollin'" from Tanya Morgan's 2011 album "You & What Army"). She thinks thoughts of inspiration on "Early Morning Sunshine" and wonders if there's second chance with an ex on the closer "(Am I) Crazy 'Cause I Believe". As great as "Estate Of Mind" is, the album barely gained any traction. She recorded one more album for RCA and decided to call it quits by the time "Suspended Animation" was released in 1979. Sands is an unsung hero of the 70's blue-eyed soul movement and her album deserves an honest listen.
