HASH(0x9324f360) étoiles sur 5 lesson learned: read product descriptions and beware of deceptive reviews 1 septembre 2011

After I ordered and received this book, I discovered that it was different from the one that was discussed in reviews that I had read. It turns out that the reviews that I got most of my information from were apparently for a different European phrasebook (or maybe another edition of this one), also by Lonely Planet (I think), which includes several languages not in this one. (For some reason, reviews are applied to both books at the Amazon site.) This book includes Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish. It does NOT have Basque, Catalan, Dutch, Irish, Maltese, Welsh, or another language or two that I might have seen mentioned. It is pretty informative, but I believe the other book has more info in it. While I can't help feeling kind of disappointed, I still think this is a pretty neat, pretty handy little book. 15 languages is still impressive. I really appreciate the pronunciation guides. I just wish I had ordered a copy of the other book, like I thought I had. Oh well. Maybe I'll get one later; I'll just have to continue enjoying this one in the meantime. I should have taken a closer look at this book's cover and the product description before I ordered it, so I do have to place most of the blame for my disappointment on myself. (Update: Turns out that the other book is a Mass Market Paperback version, and the only languages that the two books have in common are French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.)

HASH(0x933ee5f4) étoiles sur 5 Fairly helpful 17 juin 2013

Bought this for a backpacking trip through Europe. It's pretty helpful for the basics of the countries however, most of the non-basics are questions so you can ask for directions, rates, etc. Cool, you ask for directions in another language. Now what are you supposed to do when they answer in the other language? The book doesn't have common answers to most of the questions it teaches you to ask, making it somewhat pointless to ask. Truthfully, most of the time people just answer and speak to you in English but it's nice to show you're trying.

I will be traveling to western Europe this fall and purchased a few phrasebooks to try to narrow down some general phrases for each country I am to visit. This book is a little harder to navigate than Rick Steve's book (which I also purchased) but it has been helpful to compare the two but I do think I will stick with Steve's book as it has the three languages I need (Italian, French, and German) in a little more detail. This book is still great and includes many more languages I didn't need which also may have been a reason this book suffered in comparison.

I had such a hard time when it came to the language pronunciation sections. I practiced with this book for weeks and when i got to Europe... my friends told me i was pronouncing everything wrong. But... i guess if they understood me, it helped a little.

HASH(0x97455b74) étoiles sur 5 Two different editions 11 avril 2012

There are 2 different editions! If you are reading reviews before 2009 it is a different edition and diffent languages. I found this book in 2010 after a trip to Europe and wish I had found it before my 2009 trip to Czech Republic and Hungary. My 2010 trip took me to Russia and Poland. I love the format of the book ease of finding phrases as well as a short dictionary in 15 languages. The only thing lacking are CDs (perhaps) 3 CDs with 5 languages each of the main phrases for greeting and finding directions which are the most important.
