Descriptions du produit

"This new album by Julie Fowlis is a carefully selected collection of songs from Gaelic Scotland. Traditional songs presented with new musical accompaniments, this record is all about the songs, and all about the story. With lush accompaniments and arrangements, this record really showcases the strength and maturity of Julie's voice; a change, she says, which has come after having two children. 'A great singer and friend of mine told me when I was expecting my first child that my voice would change, and he was right. I feel now that this is the true sound of my voice.'
During the four years since her last studio album release, Julie has spent time researching Gaelic culture and tradition through a Masters degree and an Artist in Residence project with one of Europe's most ambitious digital archive projects, Tobar an Dualchais. She has also developed her career in broadcasting, presenting for Sky Arts HD, BBC Radio 2 and 4 and BBC Scotland and ALBA TV. She also recorded and produced music for the Grammy/Oscar/Golden Globe winning animation film, Disney Pixar's 'Brave', and has been awarded a number of accolades, including an Honorary Doctor of Music degree. Her brush with Hollywood has influenced her reach and audience but she remains grounded and connected to the traditions of her homeland.
Featuring fantastic musicians Éamon Doorley, Duncan Chisholm, Tony Byrne, Donald Shaw, Tom Doorley, Ewen Vernal, Iain Sandilands, Micheal McGoldrick, RANT fiddles and more, 'Gach Sgeul/Every Story' is another extraordinary recording from one of Scotland's brightest jewels."

I bought this cd because I love Julie Fowlis, and have loved her other cd's as well. I've only listened to this new cd a couple of times, but I knew right away I was right to buy it. I just love her voice, the melodies, and of course the Gallic language songs. This cd has more other instrumentation than her other ones, and I like that - for example, an accordion with a wonderful rhythm in one song. I am a huge fan of Celtic music to begin with, have been for years - I am Irish-American. But in listening to Celtic music over the years, I found that often Scottish music is actually my favorite. The Scots just seem genetically programmed to make good music - and plenty of it! I also like Old Blind Dogs, especially their first recordings. I like traditional Celtic music that feels authentic to me in some way, and I feel that Julie's music fits this bill. There is great appeal in her music - voice, melody, lyrics, instrumentation - but I feel there is something else there - something from long ago, that is deeper than surface appeal. I also like Iarla O Lioniard, the Irish sean nos singer, for the same reason. I would recommend this music to anyone who loves Celtic music, both traditional and contemporary - it is just great music!

If you’ve heard that Scottish Gaelic is an endangered language, then listening to Julie Fowlis might cause some cognitive dissonance. Her voice is so angelic it seems more likely that people would be studying just to be able to understand her. One critic describes her as “pure as a Highland spring”—which works, even though she hails from the Outer Hebrides—and her fourth album is, indeed, a piece of the Gaelic renaissance. Gach Sgeul includes songs from the slow and melancholy to joyful puirt-a-buel (“mouth music”) tunes and is backed by a variety of traditional instruments (fiddle, harmonium) as well as the bouzouki, which has been part of the Celtic revival since the 1960s. My personal favorite of the set is the lively “Ribinnean Riomhach” (Beautiful Ribbons), though I also keep coming back to the touching sound of “An Roghain Dain Do Eimhir XXII” (The Choice). If you want to hear something in Gaelic that’s more accessible, listen to Fowlis’ rendition of the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” released as a single in 2008.

This album was my first exposure to Julie Fowlis, and I am elated that I got to see her in concert to hear this music for the first time. Julie's voice brings magic and lyrical beauty to the words of each tale. Listening to her sing, even without understanding each word (yet), evokes every emotion intended to come forth with each song. Julie's warm and welcoming personality allows her fans to feel a connection to her through her music.

I'm off to buy the rest of her music!

Julie Fowlis is a treasure beyond measure. Listening to her beautiful CD's, one senses immediately her genuine love for her material, her heart, her intelligence, her precision. It seemed clear to me that she treats music as a mission and I salute her obvious
dedication. Thanks for the beauty! ( I am now trying to learn the language.)
