3.0 étoiles sur 5 Better Selection Choices Would Have Made This A 5-Star Volume 21 janvier 2014
Par George O'Leary - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Completist hits collectors everywhere have likely given up hope of ever seeing a definitive CD anthology covering the output of singer/songwriter Jimmy Holiday (born in Sallis, Mississippi on July 24, 1934) - at least one that includes all sides of the seven songs he put onto the various national singles charts between 1963 and 1968. At the moment there are just three Jimmy Holiday CDs on the market, with two of them being, in effect, the same collection, and combined you'll get six of the seven that charted and just three B-sides.

In 2009, Legacy International released their 12-track volume titled "How Can I Forget" which is simply a repeat of the 1996 Collectables release with the same title and, although still available new, you won't find by searching under "Jimmy Holiday." Until Amazon corrects that glitch, if you wish to track it down search under the ASIN B00000090Y. As for their content, both deal only with his Everest Records years which include the two nationally-charting sides How Can I Forget? - a # 8 R&B/# 57 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in March-April 1963 on Everest 2022, and Poor Boy - a # 124 Hot 100 Bubble Under in June 1963 on Everest 2027, along with their B-sides Janet and Don't Laugh. Also included are these failed singles: Country Girl b/w I've Got A Woman (Everest 2034) in 1963; in 1964 - I Lied b/w Allison (Everest 2038) and I Believe In Love b/w/ One More Thing (Everest 2049), and in 1965 - Hollywood b/w Ol' Man River (Everest 2056).

This now-out-of-print 2002 EMI International 16-track volume provides these four charted sides for Minit Records but just one of their flipsides: Baby I Love You - # 21 R&B/# 98 Hot 100 August 1966 on Minit 32002 (b/w You Won't Get Away); Everybody Needs Help - # 36 R&B/# 116 Hot 100 Bubble Under March-April 1967 on Minit 32016 (b/w Give Me Your Love); I Wanna Help Hurry My Brothers Home - # 132 Hot 100 Bubble Under July 1967 on Minit 32023 as well as its B-Side We Forgot About Love - Minit 32023; and Spread Your Love - # 35 R&B June 1968 on Minit 32040 (b/w We Got A Good Thing Goin'). Those in brackets are the omissions, and what makes this especially frustrating for completist hits collectors is that the rest of the tracks here were not only failed singles, but in some cases they include both sides (see the Comments below). What you won't find on CD is his November 1965 # 115 Hot 100 Bubble Under The New Breed and its B-side, Love Me One More Time, which came out on Diplomacy 20.

Jimmy was just 52 years old when he died from heart failure on February 15, 1987 and, somewhat sadly, he will forever be remembered more for songs he wrote or co-wrote than for some of his own vocal efforts (it's worth noting here that his rendition of the Ed Townsend-penned How Can I Forget? outpaced a cover by the great Ben E. King whose effort for Atco only reached # 23 R&B/# 85 Hot 100). As for his compositions, a cover by Aretha Franklin of Baby I Love You hit # 1 R&B/# 4 Hot 100 in August-September 1967 for Atlantic, Put A Little Love In Your Heart became a # 2 Adult Contemporary/# 4 Hot 100 for Jackie DeShannon in July-August 1969 (and a # 9 Hot 10 in February 1989 for Al Green & Annie Lennox for A&M), while All I Ever Need Is You, first recorded by Ray Charles for his 1971 LP "The Volcanic Action Of My Soul," then became a # 1 Adult Contemporary (for 5 weeks)/# 7 Hot 100 for Sonny & Cher on Kapp in Nov-Dec 1971.
