Présentation de l'éditeur

Epic fantasy from an exciting new talent

A gripping tale of heroism and the darkness within

On the fringes of the Verian Empire, two small boys stumble upon a strange altar, buried in the heart of a mountain. There they awaken a horror unseen for generations, that will descend upon the realm of men while it is at its weakest. For Veria is a nation at war with itself, only recently recovered from a bloody rebellion, and the time of heroes has passed. The empire is in a state of chaos, and while its ruler, the Empron Illis, rids the land of his remaining enemies, unseen forces are gathering at the borders. However all eyes are turned inwards. The Empron is not a well man, and there are whispers among the common folk that his advisors are spies; demons that only wear the flesh of men.

Yet there is hope...

In the distant mountains, a forester who has buried his past learns that he has not been forgotten, and that his crimes have sought him out at last. But he is no simple woodsman. He is Beccorban the Helhammer, Scourge, Burner and the Death of Nations, and his fury is a terrible thing.

For when all the heroes are gone, Veria will turn to those it has forgotten, before all is lost.

Exile is the first part of the Bloodforge series, a historical fantasy epic in the vein of David Gemmell's Drenai saga.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Lots of World Building, But Short on Details of the Past 30 avril 2016

The early chapters jump between as yet un-introduced characters, which makes reading a bit confusion until the reader can sort them out. Later on, the method is not as distracting because the reader knows the characters by then.

The opening scene is very exciting, but it never gets totally tied in with what happens later. There is a lot of supposition, but never a true revelation that it started the entire cycle of war and destruction.

The character development was uneven. The reader would learn much about Beccorban, but we don't even realize how much we DON'T know about him until he starts musing and remembering times and people of which we know nothing. We know that many people hate him for past deeds, but those deeds are at best merely glossed over and not well explained. Riella is another one like that, as well as Callistan. Callistan, in particular, is never put into the story world very well. Since he has amnesia, obviously there is much he does not know, but his position in society, while the titles are given, we have no idea how important he might be in the realm.

The big unknown is why this new army is trying to conquer Daegermund. There are hints that they are an old race that ruled it before, but nothing touches how they ever got knocked from power in the first place, especially as powerful as they are. Did Loster and Barde start everything by their actions in the beginning? Also, are the slipskins and the Echoes part of the same race, or are they different?

One thing is for sure - if you like Medieval battles and settings, along with very long-winded descriptions of very mundane things, you will love this book. If you are fascinated by gory, long-running battles, this is definitely your book. I was surprised at how long the read was for me; it's like things never moved on. Don't plan to read it quickly, that is for sure.

As for homonyms, spelling, dropped words and the like, they were there, but not in any great amount, at least for my taste. My biggest problem was the slow pace of this story, and lack of relevant background and explanation of how past events fit into this world scheme. For that, three stars is just about right. The book is somewhat enjoyable, but there could be a fair amount of improvement.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of the best works of High Fantasy I have read in a while. Highly recommended. 28 septembre 2014

With a host of heroic characters set in a majestically sweeping landscape, Exile delivers the very definition of epic fantasy. Alien creatures that imitate humans in near-perfect fashion undermine the kingdom of Veria and herald the onslaught wrought by the Echoes, an ancient race of humanoids bent on recapturing their homeland. High atop a mountain, two young brothers stumble upon a Bloodforge and accidentally set into motion the death of their kingdom. Exile begins with a wonderfully heroic theme that is never lost throughout the entire novel. Fans of low (or urban) fantasy should be wary when picking up Exile - much of the background of not only the characters but the world itself is not revealed until very late in the novel which can make it a difficult read. Unlike most high fantasy series, Exile (at least in the eBook version) lacks a map to help guide the reader along. Some of the chapter transitions, especially before the characters are firmly established, can be quite jarring. Tom Stacey's writing style is reminiscent of Joe Abercrombie - stunning imagery, a large cast, and very well placed metaphors that bring the characters to life. - Stuart Thaman. I'll freely admit that I don't usually take the time to rate books, but this book is so good that I felt compelled to do so. Very well written with an original story and great characters. A terrific read that will keep you engaged until the very last page.

I really enjoyed the pace, the characters and the story of this book. If you're a fan of Gemmell's Druss then you'll be a fan of this novel and series!

Exile is an energetic, driving dark medieval fantasy full of dynamic characters. The slipskins in particular are deliciously terrifying, and Callistan and Riella were a joy to read. I look more to seeing more from Tom Stacey!
