Présentation de l'éditeur

Becoming a dad can be a daunting time – especially when most pregnancy and parenting information is targeted towards women. This exciting new book, from a leading expert in working with expectant dads, doesn’t sideline or speak down to men. Instead it provides an array of targeted information to fully prepare men for their new roles – as both birth partners and fathers.

The Expectant Dad’s Handbook is a one-stop guide for men on their path to fatherhood. It provides practical answers to all the questions on the mind of a dad-to-be – from what to expect at each stage of pregnancy to how to cope with any worries and fears about becoming a dad. It also reveals unique insights into a dad’s role during labour, showing key strategies for improving the birth.

Both practical and accessible, this guide will provide all the information and advice fathers need for the journey ahead.

Biographie de l'auteur

Dean Beaumont specialises in working with expectant and new fathers, and is the founder of the award winning DaddyNatal. Dean teaches DaddyNatal classes throughout the East Midlands and London. He is often asked to speak at events, most recently at The Royal College of Medicine Conference on the role of the father at birth. 'Antenatal Pioneer' (Daily Mail, 2011) Dean is a regular contributor to features around the role of the man/father in the family and at birth. Dean frequently is asked for his expertise in this field, and appearances include Channel 5's 'The Wright Stuff', BBC 1s 'The One Show', and various BBC/CH4 documentaries (featured on BBC3 documentary ‘How Sex Works’ in Jan 2012 and BBC2 documentary ‘How to be a Dad’ in Feb 2012). Most recently, Dean featured on the Sky documentary ‘She’s Having a Baby’ (August 2014) and filmed with Jon Richardson for a Channel 4 documentary which aired in Autumn 2014. Dean founded the unique DaddyNatal http://www.daddynatal.co.uk/ antenatal education programme, becoming the first male professional antenatal educator in the UK.

There's a lot to like about The Expectant Dad's Handbook. As a Relationship Counsellor, I particularly appreciate Dean's tips on how husbands can respond supportively to their wives concerns, "just telling her 'not to worry' is really not going to help: reassure her", and "don't try to solve or fix the problem (this is a classic male reflex...just be there to listen". In the postnatal section, I love: "Don't suffer 'back-to-work amnesia...it's too easy to fall into the trap of thinking 'life is back to normal' because you are back into your familiar routine...Mum is probably doing now on her own what you had both been doing up to this point...".

The book addresses the normal and common anxieties, fears and questions that expectant fathers have - a vital part of the parenthood process as being unprepared and experiencing feelings that remain unspoken can impact the labour and also have a tendency to trip up parents in different ways down the track. Dean also validates a new Dad's feelings of jealousy and exclusion, providing advice for how to manage these feelings to they don't fester.

importantly, for the whole family, the book also encourages bonding between dad and baby and why it's important for baby's development, for dad's confidence and for the relationship between partners.

Dean also addresses the need for birth professionals to involve and support fathers so they can step up and realise their potential to comfort and support their wives during labour and birth, rather than step back and risk letting her down when she needs him.

The Expectant Dad's Handbook has just the right amount of information, is written in an engaging, easy to read manner and gives some great nuggets of advice that can, I think, set a new family up for a great start.
