5.0 étoiles sur 5 Surprisingly, a modern sounding piece of classic thrash metal from the late '80s. 22 janvier 2011

Just discovered this band thru a Thrash Metal compilation video someone made for YouTube. Heard their guitar tone and decided I liked it. That's one of the first things I listen for when trying to find new bands to listen to/collect....guitar tone. Well, anyway, so once I decided that guitar tone was cool, I searched for more videos for this band. Found a few and decided that I would buy their CDs. Fortunately Amazon has their their two classic and recent album on MOD CD-R format for a reasonably affordable price, so I bought all three. So anyway, this is some really good stuff. Think early Metallica, "Puppets" and "Justice"-era Metallica. A bit of technicallity and melody in there with easily intelligible vocals similar to Hetfield, with a touch of early Chuck Billy. Personally, I wish more thrash singers would sing like this instead of the gruff growls that many use these days.

With this album specifically, for an album that originally came out in '89, it sounds extremely good. Almost as if it was recorded today. Whoever did the remastering did an excellent job. So don't let the vintage-looking artwork scare you. This is a very good sounding disc. Sound wise you that early-Metallica/Testament sound of riffage and solos, and of course vocal style. So if you long for some good old school late '80s Bay Area Thrash Metal sound, do yourself a favor and pick up MORTAL SIN's discography. It's a wonder and ashame that this band didn't make it big. Had they been a Bay Area band they might have. Being that they toured with Metallica back in the day, it's a wonder they didn't get signed to a major label at the time.

My 1 star rating is not for the album. I knew this album is a brilliant thrash effort from the 80's from Mortal Sin, a real classic. My 1 star is for the fact that the cd was not an original but home made burned copy. If I wanted mp3's burned to a cd I could have done it myself. Now I can't remember seeing this stated on the advert, maybe it was & I didn't notice it. I definitely would not have bought if I had seen it.
Long & short of it is, buy this album, it's amazing but not from the rip off seller.

Only a select few outside of Australia will remember Mortal Sin and their glory days brought about by their crunching debut 'Mayhemic Destruction' (1986) and their similarly heavy 'Face of Despair'. The Mortals succesfully toured Europe, then unfortunately folded, eventually reformed sans-all but one original member, recored the terrible 'Rebellious Youth' (1992), then folded again.

Those who do remember the Mortals in their prime will remember the sheer thrash intensity of 'Face of Despair' as these boys from the Sydney suburb of Parramatta unleashed such ball-tearing thrash anthems as 'Voyage of the Disturbed', 'I Am Immortal', 'The Infantry Corps' and 'Martyrs of Eternity'.

Mortal Sin recently reformed with most of their original line-up and released the awesome 'Out of the Darkness' DVD and toured with the original Anthrax line-up. It would appear a new album is on the way, when it will see the light of day is difficult to say.

If you love classic thrash metal, you can do far worse than hunting down 'Face of Despair'; or indeed 'Mayhemic Destruction' or the hard-to-find 'Face of Mayhem' live home video or even the 'Out of the Darkness' DVD. Mortal Sin, along with Testament, Slayer, Kreator and few others, are keeping the true metal flame burning bright into the new millenium.
