5.0 étoiles sur 5 Highly Recommended! 16 décembre 2010

When I mentioned to a friend that I was preparing to head to Hawaii as a WWOOFer, she recommended that I read Farming Around the Country by Eugene resident Brian Bender. I'm glad I took her advice, because this book - and its author - FAR exceeded my expectations as he chronicles his year's adventures as a WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) volunteer on a dozen small-scale organic farms along the east and west coasts of the USA. Its thoroughly engaging and entertaining narrative drew me in right away to the rewards and challenges of the author's life as a nomadic organic farmer.

The author entered into each farm experience with an open mind and heart and a willing spirit, fully partaking of its offerings on its own terms. In addition to farming, Brian's experiences included hiking a part of the Appalachian Trail; camping in the redwoods; sitting at a 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat; spinning fleece into yarn; couchsurfing as he traveled between host farms; living off the grid with no heat or running water; preparing goat milk kefir; apple-pear sauce, sauerkraut and other foodstuffs; beekeeping; and lots more, all richly described in vibrant detail.

Farming... is a great read for anyone. My 92-year old dad (neither a farmer nor a gardener), picked it up, got right into it and loved it. It would be especially right up your alley if you are interested in topics like organic gardening, farming, sustainability, eco-travel, or knowing more about what's involved in (organic) food production. PLUS it's a great human interest adventure story. Five stars for great writing, great story!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Terrific Weaving of Farm Vignetttes 19 janvier 2011

Bender masterfully weaves farm vignettes to convey interesting stories and skillfully portray each farm and its farmers. Even when he isn't crazy about aspects of a farm, he doesn't shy away but lets you know delicately. Unlike many farming books I have read, he shares the appropriate level of detail and doesn't waste a lot of time on endless, painful descriptions.

My only slight complaint was that personally, I wanted him to dish more on his growing agriculturual knowledge. Maybe there's a next time for that?

One of those books I was really sorry to finish.
2.0 étoiles sur 5 Confused by the high rating 7 novembre 2013

I realize this book has gotten rave reviews but I'm confused as to why. I don't think it's particularly well written, it's not very informative and it seems overly negative. I feel like every other page Brian is complaining or judging people he met along the way. As one would expect with WWOOFing, you come across people of all walks and talks of life. I was disappointed that Brian did not seem more open minded and understanding of the different lifestyles he met.
