Revue de presse

"This is no dream; it's the authors' best book in years. Not to be missed by either newcomers or die-hard fans."―Library Journal (starred review)

"They have grown steadily darker and more elegantly written...together they reach an entirely different level, achieving a stylistic grace and thematic resonance neither has so far matched alone. This may be the best of the Pendergast novels."―Booklist (starred review)

"Up the emotional ante considerably...brilliant and of the best in the series. Once again, the bestselling authors show they have few peers at creating taut scenes of suspense."―Publishers Weekly (starred review) --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition CD .

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Fun If You Overlook the Flaws 21 septembre 2011
Par Antigone Walsh - Publié sur
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
This books opens with the brutal death of Pendergast's wife Helen at the jaws of a mystical maneating lion. Some twelve lyears later, Pendergast stumbles upon a clue that leads him to determine that Helen's death was no accident after all. Pressing his long time pal, sidekick and NYC Police Lt.Vincent D'agosta into service,Pendergast uncharacteristically loses his cool while pursuing leads in the swamps of the South. After D'Agosta is seriously wounded, his lover and police captain Laura Hayward reluctantly assists Pendergast. As the body count mounts, Pendergast finds himself hunted by the mastermind of the plot and wounded by the secrets his wife concealed.

This is a fun read as long as you don't look to closely. The death of Helen is quite preposterous. The clue that alerts Pendergast to the conspiracy is a bit hard to swallow. Basically, a chance examiniation of her hunting rifle leads to the conclusion that the gun was loaded with blanks. Hard to believe wealthy people who hunt for sport and take safaris would not clean their very expensive weapons before storing them. I did not like the frenzied, out of control, heavy drinking Pendergast. Part of his attraction is his icy intellectual distance. To see him driven to distraction does not do much for the character. Moreover, the wife really seems like an uninteresting twit. It was hard to imagine any attraction between her and Pendergast. There was some develoopment between Hayward and D'agosta. Their love affair seems more mature and they both seem to have grown in a positive way.

This novel clearly is a prequesl to the next as the main bad guy has yet to be caught. Overall, it was a fast and fun read, event more enjoyable if you make an effort to over look the flaws.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Pendergast's 10th outing is a thrill 22 mai 2010

FBI Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast enjoys a successful return in the 10th book of this series by prolific partners Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I'd love to know how these two talented writers work together because they produce wonderful thrillers, this one being no exception. While not an action thriller in the sense of car chases and fistfights, this book is loaded with interesting settings and memorable characters. We start out in Zambia 12 years ago, where Pendergast relaxes, exchanging witty banter with his beautiful alpha wife. (My impression here was of an Ava Gardner type ala Mogambo.) We enter the story just as our happy couple embark on the adventure that will leave Helen dead in a most brutal way. By chapter 5 we're back in the present, when Pendergast chances to examine Helen's weapon from that last day, only to find evidence that her horrific death was not accidental. Needless to say, Pendergast recruits old pal detective Vincent D'Agosta, who leaves girlfriend police captain Laura Hayward stewing back home as he and Aloysius jet from place to place to find the killer.

It was really fun to see these familiar, interesting characters again; it's also great to find out more about this intriguing main character. The settings were fabulous, the dialogue punchy. No flagging pace -- a great read from start to finish, with an ending that is plausible *and* incredible. I enjoyed every page and can't wait for the next one!

I wish they'd make a movie (if they could find someone to do A.X.L. Pendergast justice)!

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Very mixed feelings 10 septembre 2014

I have very mixed feelings.
This is my first Pendergast novel and after reading it I don't know if the authors were serious about the story line it but careless, or they were just jesting.
The book is generally very well written, I have no complaints about the writing craftsmanship.
The characters are vivid (although hardly believable) and in most parts - entertaining.
But the story line is weak and basing on an assumption, that Pendergast is just like Pythia incarnated and he just has a hunch on everything, always. And he is superior in everything, over anyone; a new Batman.
Well, this is probably a convention, but it should not become an excuse to make a wannabe story line...
The few final chapters were disappointing - apparently the authors did not have any good idea how to tie the threads of the investigation carried by the main characters to any believable finale...

All in all - three stars are the best I can do for this book, mainly for the pace, writing and entertaining characters.
However, I gave myself one more chance and purchased another Pendergast novel, the "Relic".

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another Incredible Who-Done-It ... and Why! 21 avril 2015

Another hit from the pair who created Special Agent Pendergast, FBI agent extraordinaire!

You cannot go wrong reading a novel by these authors, about Pendergast. I'm in the process of trying to catch up, having just bought #10 to #14 of these adventures, and have not yet been disappointed.

This one's a tad different, but then they all are, over time.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Getting back to form... 12 mai 2010

After pre-ordering the book on kindle, I read the book in one sitting. I must say that Preston-Child are showing some love back to Prendergast series after the last couple of mis-haps ( yes, wheel of darkness quite ruined the series for me ). This book gets basic elements right and tells a compelling story set in the heart of American south.

In my humble opinion, there are three sets of Pendergast series. The first three belong to the great series, namely, Relic, Reliquary and Cabinet of curiosities. The second set is the "Diogenes" series ( Brimstone, Dance of death and Book of the dead ), which are quite good reads, but could get repetitive. The third set is purely commercial breaks between solo projects of each authors ( Still life..,Wheel of darkness and recent Cemetery dance ).

This book signals the return to form for the authors. Recurring characters are kept to a minimum and story is fast paced with thriller elements. Sherlockian style is quite visible here more than any other novels. Also the books seems to leave quite loose ends of the story for continuation in another book, but is not quite unwelcome. We would love another great story by the authors.

One nagging doubt for me is if the authors are getting themselves into a corner with Pendergast. Since the last 4-5 books dealt with similar theme around Pendergast's family, the series is getting quite contrite. A change of scenery may be good. Also, the pre-climax action sequence of the book is vaguely familiar to a recent book by one of the authors and if you were reading them back to back, similarities are hard to mess ( leverage the research, is not a bad idea, but might have been too soon ! ).

In summary, Fever Dream is quite worth the wait and signals a renewed comeback for our favorite FBI agent and loyal lieutenant. Go for it !
