Revue de presse

“Whether you are interested in football or not, this is tears-running-down-your-face funny, read-bits-out-loud-to-complete-strangers funny, but also highly perceptive and honest about Hornby’s obsession and the state of the game.” —GQ

"Hornby has established himself... as a maestro of the male confessional. [His] books reveal a fascination with the sheer voodoo of what so often passes for masculinity; the weird ritual facts, the useless objects, the losing clubs and teams." —The New Yorker
"Utterly hilarious." —Elle

"Fever Pitch transcends the mundane and the sporty to say something about the way we live." —The Observer  --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Broché .

Présentation de l'éditeur

A brilliant memoir from the beloved, bestselling author of Funny Girl, High Fidelity and About A Boy.

In America, it is soccer. But in Great Britain, it is the real football. No pads, no prayers, no prisoners. And that’s before the players even take the field.

Nick Hornby has been a football fan since the moment he was conceived. Call it predestiny. Or call it preschool. Fever Pitch is his tribute to a lifelong obsession. Part autobiography, part comedy, part incisive analysis of insanity, Hornby’s award-winning memoir captures the fever pitch of fandom—its agony and ecstasy, its community, its defining role in thousands of young men’s coming-of-age stories. Fever Pitch is one for the home team. But above all, it is one for everyone who knows what it really means to have a losing season. --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition Broché .

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Fever Pitch wasn't just a movie 2 septembre 2009

Before the Jimmy Fallon/Drew Barrymore/Boston Red Sox romantic comedy of 2005, Colin Firth starred in a soccer (football) film from 1997. That itself was of course based on this novel by Nick Hornby.

You don't have to be an Arsenal fan to enjoy the book, and thankfully you don't even have to be British. Yes, of course there were specific statistical references that went over my head, but the important concepts in the book come through (to be specific: loneliness, and the efforts to fill that void through either family or fanship). So do the many nuggets of truth, especially about youth.

My favorite passage:

"Sport doesn't allow you to dream in the way that writing or acting or painting or middle-management does: I knew when I was eleven that I would never play for Arsenal. Eleven is too young to know something as awful as that." p.244

Some more of my favorites:

"The natural state of the football fan is bitter disappointment, no matter what the score." p.20

"Of course I feel nostalgic, even if I am longing for a time which never really belonged to us." p.31

"After my initial alarm I grew to love the movement, the way I was thrown toward the pitch and suck back again." p.75

"You stand there in the shadowed dark looking down into the light, on to the brilliant lush green and it's as if you are in a cinema watching a film about another and more exotic country." p.185
5.0 étoiles sur 5 What it is like to be a sports fan 11 mai 2005

Nick Hornby describes exactly what it feels to be a fan of a team in terms that almost anyone who is a fan can identify. Heart breaking losses, non-descript performances, listening to the game on the radio, going out with your friends to watch the game at a pub and having girlfriends who just can't quite understand what the big deal is when your team finally reaches the promised land is just part of the charm that Hornby weaves into this tale of his coming of age with football.

Delightful prose adds to one's pleasure, but for the most part this is a funny, yet often times, poignant book. As a Manchester United supporter, I even found myself identifying with Arsenal (no small feat!). Highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of English Football, or even for fans of any sport, anywhere.

Reading this book brought back all the emotions of my youth spent as a football fanatic in England. His story is uncannily similar to my experiences (our paths must have crossed twice at Cambridge Utd's games against Wrexham and Newcastle United) right down to supporting a different team than everyone else at your school and the price you pay for that. Well, ok, there's one big difference between him and me: I support Burnley, a team which has gone rapidly downhill during the time period under discussion! It can also be considered an accurate portrayal of a time gone by. With the advent of the Premier League, all-seater stadia and - thankfully - much diminished hooliganism within England, many of the experiences he describes no longer exist. Great book, very authentic.

Nick is the most talented player with words and rhythm. Simply captivating, this book hypnotises the reader until the final whistle.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great read 6 janvier 2007

The only thing keeping me from giving this book 5 stars is my own complete lack of interest in anything soccer-related. Take that personal bias out, and its a great read. The insight into the soccer culture in the UK is frankly frightening, but in a very funny way. Having lived through the Denver Bronco Super-Bowl failures of the 1980's as a kid, I empathized with Hornby as he details his own irrational emotions growing up as a fan.

I think anyone, sports fan or not, will enjoy this book. Sports fans because they empathize, non-fans because it will help explain the mystery.
