Présentation de l'éditeur

"It’s just a little family history. What could go wrong?"

When Lizzie Clydell agreed to join her grandmother at the church’s genealogy group meeting she expected nothing more than lemon squares and a few stories. Instead, an old diary leads Lizzie down a dusty road of lies, hidden family secrets, and a lynching that nearly destroyed her family.

Still struggling with the loss of her parents two decades earlier, Lizzie must confront a painful past that others hoped was forgotten. Her journey becomes even more difficult as she realizes those around her may not be as they seem.

Can Lizzie make peace with the past or will it destroy the relationships she holds most dear?

Joining her is a group of lifelong friends known to Lizzie as The Gals. Headed up by her own grandmother, the group of women guide her through the past with humor, encouragement, and tough love as she learns about grace and forgiveness.

Set in small town Georgia, Finding Eliza is a contemporary story with flashes of historical fiction as Lizzie digs into 1930s segregation, illegal interracial relationships, and the fear of the KKK.

Trigger Warning: Sexual and physical assault is referrenced though not graphic in description.

"The most intriguing style to me (was) that you could tell one story three ways and do it with such grace and elegance." D.M.

"I couldn't put it down!" Y.F.

I was into chapter four before I knew it! I hated having it stop reading each time I did. C.T.

Finally, a fabulous fictional story without grinding bodies and sweaty pecks every other page. If a story doesn't grab me in the first chapter, forget it. Finding Eliza did! And, the author made me cry. Thanks. But, worth every tear I shed. Who doesn't have family secrets? Especially in small towns. This heart grabbing, stomach dropping story about digging deep into the trenches of family history, sucked me in. I was determined to finish the story no matter what the clock said. The only question I was left with was, when will the next book be out?
No, seriously. When?
No pressure.
This new author is going to set the publishing world ablaze.
Bravo!

A very touching story about discovery that our ancestors could be good or bad, depending on circumstance and opportunity. It also shows that each generation makes their own choices so the cycle doesn't have to continue.

This is also a good story for family historians to remember that we should learn the story, as much as we can, and try to understand the decisions they made in context with the world they lived in. That doesn't say we ignore bad things. It just means we should tell the story and try to learn from it.

This book surprised me! and in a very good way.
The main character is a young woman who is working through grief. She has loving support ( a grandmother and her 3 friends, plus her husband.) I am not going to tell the story line: I don't want to spoil the author's unveiling of history (through the genrology club these friends belong to and their plotting to get Eliza involved.)
Totally different than I'd expected. An excellent story line. I'd planned to read for one hour: instead, I read the whole evening and finished the book..

Let me preface this by saying, I know Stephanie, the author of this book. We slogged through National Novel Writing Month last year together along with a group of friends to turn out something worthy of being read. Stephanie managed to go a step further and published her offering. I snagged a Kindle copy as soon as it was available and devoured it!

I am a Yankee born and bred. While I know about Jim Crow laws, segregation, and life in the south, I have nothing to really compare it to. I have lived in the far reaches of New England my entire life and have rarely ventured out in my 40+ years of life. I live in a state where the vast majority have pale white skin like I do. I really have no clue what life was like then - not only for black Americans but also for those who didn't agree with the laws, but had an extremely difficult time opposing them.

Stephanie did a wonderful job conveying the emotions of the time. In just one story focusing on one family, I finally saw just how difficult it was to live during that time in our history. She conveyed not only the emotions of the time, but made it so I had a much deeper understanding of that time period.

Kudos my friend. An excellent offering! I can't wait for the next one!!! (hint, hint!!!)

Thank you Ms Fishman for writing such a wonderful book. I look forward to more of this type you may write. It is one of the best books I have read is a long time. Yes it is about genealogy, but it is also about understanding others today and those who have long ago passed away, forgiveness, healing, giving and receiving love, things that pertain to just about every family and situation that could have such positive life changing consequences. It is sad to see those low reviews. I think that they truly missed the message.
Thanks to the author's grandmother I have made note of her special message:
Every person has a name
Every life has value
Every story needs remembered
