The clock does not work on my unit. I had the unit on the charger over the weekend at my office. It said it was fully charged. I started it up before my lunch time swim. The time was off (AGAIN) so I set the date and time. an hour later when I went to the pool it was still showing the time I had set an hour before (and yes I did hit save). I reset the time and started swimming. 20 minutes later time had not changed, reset it and still did not work. When I got out of the pool to shower I looked at the unit and i noticed the time was at least working (wrong time). I watched the seconds tick by.. 1..4...5...6.........8...9 It was a good 2-3 seconds between each change of time. From the time I left the pool, showered, got dressed and walked out the clock said a total of 4 minutes had elapsed. It was more like 15-18 minutes. For reference I left teh unit on teh charger turned on all night. The clock is now 12 hours and 22 minutes behind, and the date is now a full day behind too. Checked my workout yesterday and it says PM so it was set correct yesterday.
The charger is another issue. When you put it on the charging base, the bands act like a spring and push it off the connectors so it wont charge. So you either need to latch the band around the charger as if the charger was your arm, or you have to put the watch face down on the table so the charger is on top. If you latch the band it presses right where the USB cable comes out of the base, so I fear that the band forcing that cable to the side right at the connection will wear out the connection and it will fail. The other method to keep the unit connected to charging base is to put it upside down, but that rests it on the face and I worry that doing that is going to scratch it.
Also if you do any kicking sets, it does not work. Not sure why you they could not just add a manual lap counter so that when you are doing a kicking set, you could mark your laps on your own since your hands are free. Also I hooked it up to Myfitness Pal, and after all my workouts, yesterdays was the first to push across. (Though in their defense, that could be a myfitness pal deal)
After having such high hopes, I am very disappointed. I think there is some possibility, but frankly I would wait a version or two to see if they get the bugs worked out. I frankly never expected it to be perfect, but being off 75% means that it is worthless as a tracker for me. I have been counting my own laps for 32 years of competive swimming, I may have to go old school again :-)
I am going to try a hard reset on the unit, check for the updated firmware again, and if it does not start functioning better i am going to return it.
PS Just to not sound negative, the Dashboard is awesome, and the Bridge works really well. My computer seems to always have problems connecting to USB devices (takes a couple of plug and unplugs) but the unit gets picked up right away. The navigation was a little tricky at first, I reread the manual, and realized its actually pretty easy. You can get around inside fairly well. If I can get this working to any level of comfort I am excited to try it in open water. Right now I take my Garmin 310XT start it and put it in my cap so its mostly above water. Hoping it works in open water and the laps dont mess up the overall distance calculations.
The idea this counter is based on is interesting and becomes popular among similar products, but the workmanship and quality of this watch is nothing but lousy. The rubber band broke for the first time after ~ 3 months of normal use, which is around 3000 -4000 yard/week. After some hassle with the support, I got replacement from the manufacturer. And then, ~ 3 months later, the buckle broke again and I got another replacement. The watch was designed in a funny way that the strap can not be easily replaced.
And then a couple of months beyond their 1 year warranty, the watch's display is completely dead. I talked to support again and surprisingly they do not offer any service/repair at all. All they can offer is to give me 50% discount if I buy a new one.
If you feel this is just some particular case and I was just unlucky, then the terrible design of their log website is definitely not in this category: Very strangely the data of this watch can only be uploaded to their poorly designed website, thru their special software conduit. I would not have any complaint if all these work out fine. First, every once a while, their website would be down for no apparent reason and explanation; secondly, there is no way you can backup your data in your computer; finally you can not export your data from their online program for more customized analyzing with your own algorithm.
Besides all of those, the customer support of this company is very in-responsive. They promise to get back to you within 2 days, but usually this is just the lower limit of the time it would take. A lot of times, it takes days to make them understand your issue correctly.
In short, I would recommend all the people like me looking for a reliable training monitor to look somewhere else. Before they significantly improve their product and service, it would be just a good way to waste your money and valuable training time if you decide to buy swimsense.
Given my previous experience with several swimsense watches, I feel it would be a total waste of money to get a new one. I'd rather spend some more on a Garmin Swim, which my friends gave very positive review for.
