2.0 étoiles sur 5 Kindle edition unusable 8 février 2016

The stories and proverbs in this book are okay, certainly not scintillating, but then how scintillating can content written for beginning language learners be. The problem is that the Kindle edition is very difficult to navigate. Instead of having the English immediately after each selection, the Spanish breaks off in the middle of stories, frequently in the middle of sentences, in order to give the English translation of material that preceded the selection in question and up to the point at which the selection in question was interrupted; then the English breaks off and the Spanish recommences for a time, only to break off in the middle of a thought again somewhere further on. If you would like to read an entire Spanish story at once, as I would, the only possible way to do that is to page past gobs of English to get to the rest of what you've been reading, page back again to read the first part of the translation and then forward again to read the rest of the translation. It is highly annoying and makes the book virtually useless. I can't imagine why anyone would choose such an awkward arrangement. I can only guess that someone decided that it was too much trouble to format the Kindle version in a way that would make it usable. I'm still deciding whether I'll return it.

I'm sure this book is great for a good number of people but even it is too advanced for me. For someone just starting out in Spanish, this book may not be the best to begin with. A short story in Spanish is on one page followed by the English translation on the facing page. I found myself suffering from whiplash going from Spanish word to English word. I believe this book is more for intermediate beginners and not for novices like myself.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 The stories are so interesting, you want to persevere through the language difficulties to see what happens next 6 mai 2015

I really enjoyed the stories in this book. While a few were familiar fables, there also were some very unusual stories with different twists for endings. I especially enjoyed Por Qué Muchas Personas No Figuran en el Censo, a hilarious story about a poor census taker trying to get a straight answer from a chatty housewife. The last story about a train station guard revealing the deceptive nature of traveling by trains to a hapless traveler could be the basis for a Stephen King novel. I felt more comfortable with the Spanish as I worked my way through the book and I think it has definitely helped my vocabulary. For words I didn't know, I either used the Kindle built-in dictionary (with definitions in Spanish, so not always helpful) or the Kindle translation, but then I was able to scan over the English translation every few paragraphs to make sure I had understood correctly or to get myself back on track if I was completely confused. Unlike some dual-language books, the English translations in this book were excellent. I will definitely order the next book in this series.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Nice stories for a beginning reader 17 juin 2016

Nice stories for a beginning reader, but made more difficult by the numerous idiomatic expressions. Unfortunately, the book was designed with the Spanish pages followed by English pages. In a print format this works nicely--in an eBook where one print page does not equal one electronic page, this means a lot of chasing around, looking for the translation. Other than that, I like the stories and I have learned a lot of new words.

This book is a welcome change from the interminable college student atmosphere of grammar book translation exercises, written by grammatica authors who don't realize the increasing numbers of adults studying foreign languages, including retirees who have moved to Spanish speaking countries. The stories are amusing and easy to read with the dual language setup on facing pages. I would recommend it for any student who has had basic grammar and vocabulary and doesn't have to "peek" at the translation for every other word. Humor is always a great motivation for study.
