From the basics of why physical activity is beneficial to us to how to get started this book goes on to provide information on the following:
Outdoor Activities * Indoor Activities * Creative Movement * Water Fun * Holiday Activities

What I LOVE about this book is that ALL the games/activities are linked at the beginning of the book so that you do not have to skim through a chapter looking for a game that you 'know' is there but is eluding you!

In the introduction the author explains how child obesity has more than doubled in the past 30 years and it has tripled in adolescents. Inactivity is a problem! It is vital as parents/grandparents/caregivers that we encourage our children to be active. Not doing so sets them up for problems later in life and think what the next generation will be like! Yes it is not a pretty thought!

PLEASE NOTE that this book was written with toddlers and preschoolers in mind which is an age where if we set good examples they will stay with them. SO if they learn to love exercise and movement now they will continue to enjoy it once they are in school playing and partaking in sports etc.

Some of the games are simple in this book but if you have a wide range of ages in your house it is quite easy to "harden" the games. Take hopscotch for example. The author in this book shows a very basic layout with one number on top of each other. Get your older children to draw their own or draw a much more challenging outline for them. Another great example is kite flying. Yes, a very small child needs help to hold onto a kite string and a one stringed kite is enough. However, for your older child, challenge them with a stunt kite! That way your whole family can be together having fun with the same activity.

Please note that there are not illustrations for every activity. Most are just writing.

Creative Movement is an interesting section. Most children LOVE music. This is a great opportunity for them to learn about the different styles of music. Put on some marching music and get their feet a-marchin'! Put on some music with a beat and get them clapping. A sense of rhythm is important in life. Have some fun pretending you are different animals. Can you scurry like a frog? Gallop like a horse?

On a warm day get outside and enjoy some water games. Can they walk with a wet sponge on their heads? How about crawling with a bowl of water on their back? Of course, probably one of the favorites is the sprinkler!

Activity ideas are also given for each of the main holidays. At the end of the book in the appendix both the U.S. and the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines are provided.

As with all activity books, there will likely be some that you already know about and do but some will be fresh. Others may have got lost in the memories of time and so this book will help refresh that memory!

A great resource book! Pages and pages of suggestions so even if you do not like one, you will like another. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This book contains a collection of old school games. Activities we used to do as kids before cable, tablets and video games. Some may find it as nothing special but the games are really fun. If you want to lessen screen time for the kids, this book is really filled with easy and budget friendly ideas. It can keep the kids moving this summer.

This had a lot of great activities that incorporated physical fitness for children, while they think they are just playing games. I host all of my grandchildren for "Grandma Camp" and this has helped with many great activities.
