2.0 étoiles sur 5 Romance with a bit too much fantasy for my taste 4 février 2014

True to its title, you get to the goods pretty fast.

Tamara is a widow of a race car driver who died in a spin-out. Two years after her husband's death, Tamara decides that she's ready to dip her toe in the dating pool again. After breaking up with a dud who didn't get her engine going (pun intended), she bumps into Elec Monroe, a rookie race car driver. It's lots of lust at first sight. Since they can't keep their hands off each other, Tamara and Elec must figure out how to navigate the complications of their lives.

Generally, this is pretty much a pure fantasy. A mom finds a younger stud who thinks her stretch marks are hot.

I get that this is an escapist genre, but it got a wee too far-fetched for me at times, and the writing got annoying sometimes.
* Both Elec and Tamara talked like 18-year-olds. Okay, I can see Elec having a more macho, young voabulary, being a race car driver. But, apparently Tamara, a sociology professor, always says "awesome" and "cool."
• Elec was way too good to be true. A mid-twenties guy who just knows what to do with kids, and sensitive to the point of Mother Theresa. I know heroes are usually fantasities, but I like my fantasies with a bit more reality in them. Just my personal preference.
• The constant shifting POVs can get kine of confusing and bewildering. One minute, we'd be in Tamara's mind, then the next, we'd be in Elec's.
• I hate to be a prig about this stuff, but this particular story had a few too many typos and inconsistencies for something this price. There were a number of times where clothes would spontanteously change mid-scene (dress pants became jeans, etc.)

All of my problems aside, I liked how the heroine was a mom and had to deal with complications of real life. I also thought that the issues that Elec and Tamara faced were real issues that most of us can relate to (not necessarily the race car driving, but the complications). It was nice to read a romance that didn't have a completely trumped-up conflict.

Tamara is a widowed mother of 2 adorable young children (her husband was a race car driver). Her path crosses with a young, rookie driver, Elec. There is instant chemistry and hot sex.

This book is about how these two fall in love, are able to put their age difference and other issues aside to be together. Actually, Elec doesn't seem to have any problem with their relationship, it's mainly Tamara who does the periodic freak out. She keeps it fairly together until the ending - she pulls something that is really surprising and disappointing. She recovers quickly and is remorseful, but it still leaves a bad taste in your mouth. She's a bit too seasoned to be freaking out like that. Bummer. Hurt the happy feeling and ending of the book for me.

Otherwise, this book is a smooth, easy read. The kids are cute. The secondary characters are fun. You can already tell where the second book will focus on.
This is a romance-lite. Nothing heavy, no gross misunderstandings, no broken pasts, no angst, etc. Just a bit of worrying about age, safety, etc. Nothing major. The sex scenes are hot and heavy. The author writes pretty well. (Typos etc don't bother me too much, so if there were any, I glossed over them).
So if you are looking for a predictable light romance with decently strong likeable characters, hot sex, then this is for you.
I have read a few of these in a row and am getting a bit tired of them. But I didn't want to rate this low just b/c of my weariness factor. If your expectations are set correctly, then this will work for you.

Stock car racing. Huh, who'd think I'd actually like a story with this theme? Certainly not my family, that`s for sure. Brings back a bad memory from my younger days when my family decided a Saturday night's entertainment would be to take the fam to the stock car races. Fun, right? Ugh, absolutely NOT! I remember cringing while sitting in the stands with my eyes closed and my fingers stuck in my ears the whole time. Loud was an understatement. And the fans...OMG! Talk about rabid. I begged and pleaded not to ever have to go back. I was pretty sure my young psyche was scarred. Yea, yea, I was young and a bit melodramatic, not yet used to expanding my horizons. To this day my family still teases me about how much I disliked it. So when one of my fav authors' rec'd this series along with numerous reader friends I took a deep breath, sucked back my racing shudders and dived in. WOW! What a surprise, I loved this bk!!!

My fears of a story with a "red neck" vibe were laid to rest. Loved this author's voice and her writing style in this series. Found her side characters as entertaining as her main characters. There's a big family theme here which I always enjoy. The dialogue is often times LOL funny, especially with "Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit" Suzanne, Tamara's friend who I'm sure is bound to be a future heroine in this series. When she's not being bitchy and conflicted about her ex-husband, the phrases this girl comes up with are hilarious. Little Hunter Tamara's 7 yr old daughter, an enthusiastic race car fanatic, is also incredibly entertaining. The H/Elec, a rookie race car driver, is a keeper. He's so sweet and endearing to Tamara and her kids and so sexy hot, he certainly got my creative juices flowing ;-). Let me tell you things get steamy and deliciously HOT!!! The guy falls hard and fast for Tamara, a race car drivers widow. The h/Tamara has a lot on her plate juggling 2 young children, a job and her overwhelming attraction to the hot body race car driver. Tamara quickly dusts off her romantic cobwebs and enjoys the erotic romp with Elec. Thank goodness her fears about falling for another driver and the what if's of losing Elec to a future crash subside and she takes the HEA plunge. This was a fast hook up but it worked for me. The story flows quickly and before you know it it's over and you're left wanting more. My stock car racing fears set aside for a big thumbs up for Flat Out Sexy. Now it's on to bk 2, Hard and Fast.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. Even though it's not normally the type of book I go for, I tried it for a couple of reasons: 1) I like the author's Vegas Vampires series and 2) the story is based in the Mooresville/Charlotte area. I live in Mooresville, which is also known as 'Race City USA' because there are so many NASCAR teams based here. I'm not personally into racing, but I know a little about it since my hubby is a fan. I thought it'd be interesting to try story based where I live and about the sport that's so popular in this area. I'm glad I did!

This is a great summer beach read style book. An entertaining contemporary romance, it's not too heavy on the race stuff (so it won't get on your nerves if you aren't into the sport). Actually the drivers the way they were described were a lot of fun and, well, HOT. The story is about Tamara and Elec. Tamara's hubby was a popular driver who was killed two years ago. She's been focusing on raising her kids and work, and hasn't gotten much involved in dating. She is ready to try it, but doesn't have any interest in dating a driver because of the high risk nature of their sport. Elec comes from a family of race car drivers. He's the new up and coming rookie, and when they meet at a party Tamara doesn't recognize him. Their coming together was very sexy and sweet. A very nice romance!

I will definitely give the other books in this series a try. If you haven't tried Erin McCarthy, she does a great job at writing humorous romance that will make you laugh. Her Vegas Vampires series (High Stakes (Vegas Vampires, Book 1)) is a fun paranormal romance. I also enjoyed The Pregnancy Test and You Don't Know Jack (Brava Contemporary Romance).
