Présentation de l'éditeur

Before Anna and Sam, there was Dani and Sam.

There's one rule that all Branch operatives must live by: No attachments. When Dani O'Brien entered the Branch, she planned to trade her freedom so that her family could have a better life. But joining up with the mysterious organization is more than she bargained for. Branch head Connor watches over her closely--too closely. The training is brutal, the experiments are secret, and the missions promise to be anything but ordinary. The only thing getting Dani through each day is the hope that she'll run into Sam--a young man, about her age, who wears the world on his shoulders.

Find out how it all began in this short-story prequel to Jennifer Rush's thrilling and suspenseful Altered series.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Nice, short novella to an amazing series! 9 juillet 2015

I said in my Altered review that I would be talking about these covers again. I am sorry, but I have too! I love how they are gray scale with the colored text. I want to say that was the first thing my eyes took it, but it wasn't. It was Sam's yummy looking chest. Like I've said: Favorite covers with a model on them hands down.

In my review of Altered I didn't talk about Dani at all. So I'll talk about her a little now. Long story short, Anna had an older sister named Dani. Sadly she is dead. Before Sam's memory was wiped him and Dani were in love. He went back to The Branch for her. I didn't talk about it in my Altered review because of spoilers and all but it isn't that big of a deal. Bigger things happen in Altered then that.

In Forged we learn how Dani first entered The Branch. She was naive and did it to protect her sister. At the time she didn't know Sam and she was desperate for Anna to have a better life then she did. Their father was addicted to pain pills and alcohol and their mother was a harsh woman who learned from her husband. Under the promise that if Dani went and work for The Branch her home life would be fixed. She accepted. It isn't until the end of this 32 page novella does Dani realize she made a HUGE mistake.

I love how this novella makes you like Connor (He is the head of The Branch and a horrible person in Altered) Honestly, I didn't realize how young he was. I expect a man in his fifties, sixties even! But Connor seems barley old enough to drink. For a few pages I actually shipped him and Dani. Then I realized that Dani ends up with Sam. I expected the novella to focus more on her and Sam falling in love, but it was more of Dani falling into place with in The Branch. We don't officially meet Sam until the last several pages.

I have too say, I did like this novella. I am not a fan of novellas because I typically like more in a story so I tend to avoid them. But if I like a series enough I will give them a shot. I am pretty excited now to start on the other novellas in this series. Suggestion though: Read Altered before Forged!
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Fascinating story that was WAY too short 9 janvier 2014

Like most novellas, Forged suffers a lot from being entirely too short. I found the story to be fascinating, but abrupt. Just when I thought that I was starting to understand a character or as soon as I would develop some questions about what was going on the story just ended. Like that. It left me feeling overwhelmingly unsatisfied. And yet ... I liked this story. I just wanted there to be more of it.

This story centers around Dani and her first introduction to the Branch. I read this story after reading the first two books in the series, and knowing the events of those stories made this one come across as a lot more tragic. Additionally, because of the the actions that Dani (and Connor) make in those stories I read this short story with A LOT of unanswered questions. Why were they doing what they were doing? Were they good guys or bad guys? What led them from the events of this story to their eventual actions in the main two books? So many questions. WAY too few answers.

Dani is the main character in this one, and I am still not sure how I feel about her. Like most of the other characters in these stories, she seems to be a huge victim of circumstance in her life. She means well. I can feel that her intentions, at least initially, are good. Knowing how her eventual choices will impact Anna and Sam and the rest of the guys makes this view into her first entrance into this world interesting and yet also puzzling.

The book blurb plays on the Dani and Sam relationship angle, but if you are looking for evidence of their romantic feelings for each other you will be sadly disappointed. In fact, Sam is not in this one very much at all. Connor is, though. Connor, for those who do not remember, is the head honcho from book one. In that book he is definitely bad. In this book ... not so much. In fact, I found him to be so fascinating. I wanted to know more about him. I wanted for there to be a huge Dani/Connor romance. I was so interested in what made this guy tick. But, like I say, there wasn't enough time to get to know him, and those who have read the first book in the series know that there won't be enough time in that book to know him either. Bummer!

So this was an enjoyable little novella that I probably would have loved way more if I had grabbed it while I was anxiously awaiting the publication of Erased. As it was, though, I ended up wishing that this story was a lot longer. That might be a project Jennifer Rush could take on in the future. I would totally buy that story! Three stars!
3.0 étoiles sur 5 Just a bit longer 3 juillet 2014

This book is a good second book for after you read Altered or Erased. (They are the same) It completes some of the things missing. But I think that Jennifer Rush should have made this a little bit longer. If it was longer it would cover more of what the readers of Altered or Erased want to know between Dani and Sam. Some readers might have questions like: Did Dani die? ,or How did they clear Sam's memory?, Did Sam just play along with Connor's plan for Dani all along?. And a few questions I really want to know the answer to is: Who killed Dani, and why her? And why after Dani, did they go for Anna? And did the "Branch" murder Dani and Anna's parents to access Anna? I do love this mystery series though. I is a wonderful cliff hanger but there is a beautiful love between Sam and Dani, then Sam and Anna. I didn't think that Anna and Sam would of lover each other even after they found out that Sam was with Dani.

I came with no preconceptions because I hadn't read Altered yet, but, I now have it on reserve at the library to pick up this week..

This book acts quickly probably because of the length. Dani is the main focus of this novella Conner is definetly focused on her, at least, he is here. I'm not sure where that will lead but I don't think he's acting. Since from the synopsis of Altered states it's about Sam who played a small role in this book and Anna then I'm not sure where Dani will come in later but we'll see won't we.
