From a relatively narrow period of Zoot Sim's recording life, Avid's "Four Classic Albums" present the Zoot fan with an ideal opportunity to own over two and a half hours of wonderfully remastered mid-1950's jazz. 3 of the original albums were recorded in 1956, while the Four Brothers disc was done in early 1957 - almost exactly 10 years after the first appearance of The Four Brothers as a combo, before Woody Herman reorganized with his 1948 herd. Stan Getz was in the original Four Brothers but is not on this 1957 album that features Sims, Herbie Steward, Al Cohn & Serge Chaloff. Cohn had replaced Steward with Herman's band later in 1948. Chaloff on baritone sax replaced Jimmy Giuffre's tenor from the early combo period. This album is highly enjoyable and relatively scarce. Serge aquits himself admirably and Herbie Steward's playing impressed me. Al & Zoot were great as usual. The liner notes supply solo order which makes listening more enjoyable.
The second album is "From A to Z" by the Al Cohn-Zoot Sims Sextet, although 4 cuts are a quintet without the trumpet of Dick Sherman. The rhythm section is notable here with the solid Milt Hinton on bass, Osie Johnson on drums and Dave McKenna on piano - spelled by Hank Jones.
The third album is "Zoot" which has been reissued on CD and has appeared on repackages like "That Old Feeling". The original vinyl LP is a tough find. This was a quartet put together by Sims in 1956 with Knobby Totah on bass, Johnny Williams on piano and Gus Johnson on drums. All give inspired performances here and this combo gave Zoot a lot of blowing room. The reliance on just Sims as a lead horn did not disappoint at all. Zoot plays alto sax on one cut to good effect.
The fourth album is "Whooeeee" by The Bobby Brookmeyer-Zoot Sims Quintet. Both leaders were with the Gerry Mulligan Sextet at the time of this recording in the summer of 1956. They lined up Hank Jones on piano, Bill Crow on bass and Jo Jones on drums for a very satisfying set. The original liner notes indicate that Allen Morgan thought this was sort of a breakout performance by Brookmeyer on valve trombone - I guess Morgan had been largely unimpressed to that point.
If you're new to the swinging tenor of Zoot Sims, this would be a decent introduction. He is widely regarded as one of the top saxophonists of all-time. Notice how he never loses the beat and very, very rarely plays an inappropriate note or phrase and says enough in his improvisations without over-complication.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good Sound but not Great 19 juillet 2011

The music is great. Terrific value. Original liner notes slightly edited for space. The only reason I didn't give this compilation 5 stars is the sound quality. The sound is a little muddy. I own the "The Four Brothers....Together Again" disk put out by RCA. The sound is hotter and less compressed than on the AVID version. Avid states on the front of the insert that the disks were: "Digitally remastered for probably the finest ever sound quality." IMHO this is not completely accurate. Now when I say it is a little muddy, I mean it is only slightly so. The sound quality is only slightly less vibrant or as distinct as the RCA single disk. If I didn't have the comparison disk, I would most likely have been satisfied with the sound. Would I buy the Avid 2-CD collection of 4 of Zoot Sims' classic albums? Absolutely! The music swings and you get to enjoy four fine albums that would cost you substantially more if you bought them all individually--even used. This is a great buy.

Thank you AVID JAZZ for releasing these four classic albums as no one in the US has .
Very good sound indeed, excellent graphic layout and very affordable . Plus the music .... which is top shelf from the classic era .
I don't recall seeing these albums much in record shops so folks must have kept their copies . Last night I ordered the AVID JAZZ Johnny Hodges Four Classic albums from Amazon and will get the similar ones from AVID for Anita O'Day and Al Cohn .
As Woody Herman said " Zoot is one of the best rhythm sections I know "

First, let me say that I paid almost nothing per album, and all of these albums are great. However, price is the only reason this product doesn't get 1 star.

This is cheap because it is a euro-bootleg edition from a shady label. It's part of the crop of recent reissues that resulted from old jazz albums falling into the public domain in England after 50 years. I compared them to sound high quality non-bootleg reissues and there is no comparison.

They say these are "digitally remastered," but that doesn't mean anything specific. They also claim it's a high quality presentation of these albums, and that is objectively untrue. In this case, these CDs sound like they were recorded from either degraded old tapes or old LPs and then subjected to a lot of nasty EQ to brighten up the mix. Clearly this process was not supervised by a talented audio engineer in a proper studio, because these mixes hurt my ears. I have to roll off the high end just to make them tolerable. What were they thinking?

I plan to listen to these albums, decide which ones I like, and then buy the real digital remasters from the real labels, since I can't stand to listen to these harsh, tinny, and distorted mixes for long.

Almost every one of these "4 classic albums" and "8 classic albums" type reissues from Avid Jazz and Real Gone Jazz suffer from these same drawbacks. The Real Gone Jazz items are much worse than Avid though -- on average.

Of all the many jazz players whom I have heard, Zoot Sims is the single swingingest musician of them all. You can never have too much Zoot in your music librrary!
