Présentation de l'éditeur

Today, I look forward to a future where anorexia's voice will be silenced, where I can simply be Nikki Grahame and not be defined or controlled by my illness.' Say the name Nikki Grahame and most people will remember the bubbly, highly strung and hugely entertaining Big Brother 7 contestant. Since leaving the Big Brother house, she has forged a successful career for herself in presenting and writing. Yet Nikki isn't just another reality television contestant and her life story is not like any other you will ever read. From the age of eight until she was nineteen Nikki battled anorexia nervosa but few cases have been quite as extreme as hers. This compelling book tells the story of her incredible journey and has been revised to include Nikki's ongoing struggle with anorexia. Aged just eight and weighing just under three stone, Nikki was diagnosed as anorexic. For the next eight years, she was in and out of institutions - eleven in total - during which time she attempted suicide twice and had to be sedated up to four times a day so that she could be force-fed. At one point, she was sedated for fourteen days while doctors sewed a tube into her stomach, through which she was fed to get her weight out of the critical range. The lengths that she went to in order to avoid eating and find ways to exercise excessively shocked doctors who have worked in the field for years. As Nikki says, 'I've always wanted to be the best at everything I do, so I had to be the best anorexic - and I was.' With searing honesty, Nikki recounts her long and painful road to recovery, how she has had to come to terms with the long-term ramification of her illness, how she uses her new-found fame topromote awareness of eating disorders and to help those who are suffering from similar problems.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Possibly the best book I've read on Anorexia 28 juillet 2013

The beginning was tough for me to get into, but that if normal of me for most books.
This book was incredibly detailed, and I must admit at times triggering.
I admire the strength of Nikki to bear her life in the hopes that it will help others struggling.
Nikki's been through hell and back and she is still fighting, it's admirable.
LOVE this book :)

5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of the most comprehensive stories of anorexia I have ever read 25 mars 2013

I am a previous sufferer of anorexia nervosa and this is an excellent account of one persons fight with the disorder. The story is so accurate in illustrating the total torture the anorexic mind set has on the individual. I couldn't put this book down.

Good book, very matter of fact. Nicki is the perfect example of anorexia being the "bastard child of vanity and self loathing." At times it seems as though she is proud of how sick she got. Overall good, easy read.

I understand that people battling anorexia have a certain amount of imbalance. But you would like to think deciding to write a book would mean you've worked through some of that and want to share your enlightenment with others. Instead, this memoir seems to be a self-centered, shallow excuse for the author to talk, think and focus endlessly on and about herself and the big, wide, amazing world that is "Nikki".

She does a poor job of delving into why she perpetuated her anorectic behaviors and shows precious little interest in any sort of true introspection. As a matter of fact, the whole purpose of the book seems to be to highlight her reality TV experiences. In her accounts of anorexia, if anything, there is an unabashed pride at how good she was at being a "bad" patient. You can almost hear the pride and defensiveness in her voice when she says she made herself throw up occasionally but "in no way was bulimic." Right...because bulimics are "less than" anorectics? And you are a super-special anorectic, right?

I wish Nikki heath and wellness but it would have been good to put this book off until she had enough therapy to get to the true roots of her problem and/or she got a ghost writer good enough to get the real story out of her. Because what's here is simply an account of a girl who is very proud of her accomplishments in 1) anorexia and 2) reality TV...in that order. And everything else in her life seems to come a very distant third.

I have read a lot of book on Anorexia, but this one captured my attention from the very first page. Nikki's describes her struggle so poignantly and gives us a glimpse into ED treatment in the UK. She is a brave young woman and is so very lucky to be alive today. Hers is one of the most severe anorexic memoirs I have read. I wish I could meet this amazing and inspirational author.
