Présentation de l'éditeur

What does unschooling look like day-to-day?

Want to help it take root and blossom in your family?

There are a number of characteristics that allow learning to flourish, and in Free to Live I discuss the four that have had the most positive impact on our unschooling lifestyle. Understanding why these characteristics are so helpful makes it easier for parents to choose to respond in ways that support unschooling, rather than undermine it.

Learning freely, living joyfully.

HASH(0x8bf31e58) étoiles sur 5 Creating trust with the reader. 26 août 2013

I agree with the ideas of this book. The examples of the ideas seem superficial, especially the example of whether to take a sweatshirt to the park, or not. The author didn't take the risk of presenting intimate examples of how she was able to apply unschooling principals to very difficult and not-so-obvious situations. I can't imagine that after years of unschooling that she didn't have those kinds of examples to share. She didn't present gray areas. She advises her readers to create trust with their children. But I get the impression that she doesn't trust the readers. The examples feel shallow and safe, unlike unschooling which feels risky and more rewarding. Experienced unschooling parents that I know and respect will admit that unschooling can be terrifying, but they wouldn't choose another path. Perhaps it will take the next generation of unschoolers to lay bare the ups and downs.

We've been unschooling for a year now- so we're new at it- and have lots of questions. This book really helped- I have a much greater understanding of some fundamental things that need to be present in our lives to be successful unschoolers.

Pam's newest book paints a clearer picture of what it takes to unschool successfully. In this book she gives more aspects to be mindful of, without making the reader feel like they have to copy another family.

I was not familiar with Pam Laricchia's writing until I had read her first book, and I have been very impressed. I would recommend reading Free to Learn first, as this book builds on concepts covered in that book. This book uses practical, day to day examples, which I understand and appreciate. Yes, perhaps for some the sweater story is considered simple, but, it is SO related to learning. If you understand the concepts that the author introduces in the first book, it makes sense. It is easy to transfer the authors illustrations to real life examples in your home, and I think that was the authors point. Personally I enjoyed the examples and was able to relate and able to start picturing my own lifestyle of learning alongside my children. This book is more than a book about unschooling, it is also about the way you relate to your children. I believe it would benefit any homeschooler, or parent, to read this book, as it re-emphasizes the importance of the relationship between a parent and a child in the learning process. I plan to reread this book, it is rich and full of gems. Give yourself some time to absorb it before rushing into unschooling.
