First let me say that this book is simply brilliant and a joy. As a child getting me to eat any vegetable beyond peas & corn, was a truly uphill battle, and my french mother, was a wonderful and gifted cook. Yet for me they remained the evil, one must tolerate, and I was often known to pose a knife or spoon under the edge of my plate to tilt it and keep the darned vegetable juices, from tainting my delicious and favorite meat dishes.
My mother must now be enjoying & having the last laugh....... I have come to really love and enjoy vegetables; and as a personal-chef, I love finding more and more of preparing and savouring these gifts of nature !!!
This book is a true gift, wonder-full recipes with so many inventive, intelligent, ideas, and yet all based in solid tradition, the basics enhanced. And, not at all difficult, or with impossible to find ingredients. Dishes like "Green Bean,Red Rice, and Almond Salad" , "Tomato Mustard Tart" , "Courgette & Apricot Socca Tart" , "Yogurt Mousse with Raspberries" , and the stunning and delightful " Shocking Pink Pasta" !!!!! ( and these are just the ones I've tried so far).
All this wrapped in the Totally satisfying writing of Clotilde Dusoulier, I've been reading her blog and other books for some time now, and am always informed and delighted. I always have the sense of having her pay a visit and simply sitting around chatting over coffee, and yet learning so much in the process.
Guy Savoy, ( Michelin starred French Chef) once said.. " Food is more than ingredients, it is a combination of history, emotion, craft, and tradition....... what is in front of you on the plate, is most anxious to reveal all of this"
That is definitely true about Clotilde and this brilliant, wonder-full book. Do yourself, and those around you, a favor. Get this book !!!!!!

Interesting recipes, but not what I had in mind when I bought the book. My fault completely. I saw "French market" and "seasonal recipes", and living in France as I do, somehow expected simple, down-to-earth recipes to make the best out of the seasonal produce one might find at the local market.

And although the book does indeed offer seasonal recipes, I clearly overlooked the "Parisian Kitchen" part of the title, which pretty much defines the approach to be found inside. I'm guessing part of my confusion had something to do with the interpretation of "French cooking", which is not the same if you've been living in France for some time and have come to accept the cooking as normal/homely (not all French cuisine is refined and elegant; look up their Hachis parmentiers [Shepherd's pies] or hearty, winter stews and you'll see what I mean) or you're living in the U.S./UK, looking for fancy French recipes to add a touch of sophistication to your cuisine.

After having received the book and taken a good look (and eventually, looked up the author), I realised my mistake. The book isn't bad if you're looking for vegetarian dishes to impress guests with (I've decided to keep the book for just that purpose), but not what I had in mind when I bought it (my bad, once again). The recipes are generally fairly elaborate and time consuming. Many of them look delicious, but more on the fancy, bourgeois side - not particularly the kind of thing I'd usually prepare.

I gave this book to a friend for her birthday and she loved it! It is a nice change from regular French cookbooks (which can be heavily meat-based) and it gives in-season recipes. It contains lovely photos and inspiring stories about Clotilde's life in France. Recommended.

For anyone with access to the wonderful seasonal food as we find in French markets, this book is full of great recipes. I would recommend it to anyone on holiday in France, or living here, lots of fresh ideas, and available on Kindle too!

I am building quite the collection of vegan, vegetarian, raw, plant based cookbooks but this one appealed to me as something a little different, and admittedly the front cover with pictures of fresh seasonal fruit drew me in!

My experience with actual French food in France is limited to a school trip , at the age of 13 while living in Britain; and as it was: A - a cheap school trip; B: We were kids and C: We were Brits, they probably thought it we would all enjoy the basic Continental breakfast, baguettes and pate for lunch, and some kind of fast food for dinner. However on a day excursion when allowed to shop ; my 13 year old self was already a foodie and I managed to make a beeline for a little patisserie and try some authentic French pastries and yes I was hooked!

So I had to try this - French cooking, vegetarian and seasonal! What more could you ask for!! To begin with, I love the fact that this book is divided into seasons. Growing up in the UK in the 80s, we had to cook with what was available in season as that was pretty much all we had. That said, strawberries we only available in summer and they were red and flavorful not pale and bitter, the winter was dominated by root veggies from which we made soups! This book follows those principles!

Each season looks at the produce that is typically found in those months - think peas and asparagus in Spring, berries and peaches in the summer - and then features recipes that feature these ingredients. Many of the recipes are simple and easy to prepare, though be ready for some that are more involved or require more steps such as the tarts which require you to make olive oil tart dough! This weekend we enjoyed the avocado and radish mini tartines which took minutes to assemble; followed by a lentil and watercress salad! There is a recipe for a vegetarian bouillabaisse (more steps but they can be broken down) , beautiful tarts such as asparagus buckwheat and a tomato mustard tarte and I cannot wait for my tomatoes to grow to try the tomato and tarragon bread soup!

The book features snacks, appetizers, soups, main course and desserts; each with explicit directions and many mouthwatering photos! Those used to more conventional or health based vegetarian cookbooks might want to take note of the heavy French influence of breads, cheese and pastry! This is not a gluten free vegan cookbook, its true French Vegetarian and personally I am fine with that - this is healthful eating in season, full of flavor and for me, bread and cheeses is a big part of that! This is a book I will carry to my Farmers market so see if what they have, can be matched with a seasonal recipe!

My new weekend go to cookbook! Shop the Farmers market - cook with fresh food, have a glass of wine, and a big smile on my face and a full but healthy belly!

AAhhh, the joy of cooking! One of the hallmarks of any successful summer for me is the chance to read through old and favorite cookbooks as well as to welcome new ones. I was rewarded this year with the arrival of Clotilde Dusoulier's new cookbook, The French Market Cookbook. This delicious book is filled with fresh vegetarian recipes gleaned from the author's Parisian roots and wide-spread international travels. Departing from the confines of traditional French cuisine but saving and savoring the best,the author offers a sumptuous array of main dishes, appetizers, sides, salads, soups and desserts - all organized seasonally, photographed skillfully and artfully, and made accessible to even the most unseasoned cook. Ms. Dusoulier provides the most interesting introductions and anecdotes as accompaniments to her recipes, and her instructions and hints are always on the mark, almost instinctively addressing the questions on ingredients and processes that might occur to the American home cook. Most inviting may be the attitude with which the author encourages us in this book: her authentic celebration of fresh, healthful, creative recipes is offered with simplicity and good cheer, and we feel invigorated and empowered to start a new adventure in our own kitchens. Those who have followed Ms. Dusoulier's exceptional cooking blog, Chocolate&Zucchini, through the years, are already familiar with the author's style. Her curiosity, approachability and enthusiasm, as well as the hard work which clearly goes into recipe selection, creation and testing, delight her followers around the world. I'm a long-time reader of chocolateandzucchini.com and have a few of Clotilde's recipes in my go-to queue. Her ideas in this book are beautifully presented, seasonal and favor a flavor profile I love. A tartine with avocado and thinly sliced radishes is lovely---and there's a pasta with radish tops as well. The eggplant and fresh herb tabbouleh combines whole wheat couscous with harissa, tahini, lemon, basil and mint (I didn't add the cilantro). Her instructions are clear and the photos take an interesting approach--quite appetizing, more homey than slick. I wouldn't have her any other way.

Being a vegetarian for some time, I can tend to give some ruthless cook book revues. It seems that every recipe I've tried in here was definitely made and remade by Clotilde. Sometimes you make a recipe to the 'T' and you end up with such a mess that you know the author never made it. Fortunately over the years I can pretty much read a recipe and tell if it's going to end up well or not.

Her Lentil and Watercress salad has become a staple for luncheons, her Blanch Roasted New Potatoes will make you see what you've been missing by cooking them any other way.

As more and more things ripen in the garden, I intend to use this much more. Buy it!

I bought this cookbook for some fresh vegetarian recipes. The book delivered in spades. The recipes are easy to follow, and have never failed to please. The avocado and radish tartines are fabulous! I have served them as appetizers at a party, for a hot summer lunch with cold salads, and a good snack after a long day. This cookbook lets you expand your veggie repetorie!
