Let me start by saying this book deserves to be a 4 star rating. I truly enjoyed it from cover to cover. So why did I only rate it 3 stars? I think the title is unintentionally misleading. This was not really a honey cookbook, in fact some of the recipes do not even contain honey. This book is more a mix of recipes and beekeeping facts. Ms. Masterton does state in the intro that not all of the recipes contain honey, but rather they all include ingredients that would not exist without bees as pollinators. This is not evident from the cover or title.

The book is organized into chapters by the season and months of the year. Each season lists the chores of the beekeeper and then is divided into individual months with recipes. There is a variety of recipes from appetizers through desserts and even some drinks.

Here's what I liked: Beautiful color pictures of beekeeping throughout the year and of some of the recipes. I also enjoyed reading about Ms. Masterton's adventures in beekeeping and all of the fun bee facts throughout the book.

What I think could have been improved: not all of the recipes have pictures. I always find it more difficult to get excited about a recipe without a pretty picture. I also would have liked more recipes with honey.

As a novice beekeeper, I really enjoyed this book for it's beekeeping tips and recipes. Perhaps it should have been titled simply "Recipes from a Beekeeper's Kitchen".

I just learned of Laurey Masterton when I received my e-blast from Cook's Warehouse, Atlanta,Ga., where I assist Chef's in cooking and demonstrating, that Laurey would be a visiting chef this October 2013. I could have signed up to assist but I've accumulated so many points towards free classes from my sweat labor, I decided to sign up to listen, taste and enjoy. I have been taking a series of Wine Classes held in this same store (Cook's) and have learned much on the varietals of wine paired with food. Laurey's book goes into the varietals of honey paired with foods which makes for intriguingly flavorful tastings. With each honey varietal, Laurey provides a description in the same manner as wine is described. The recipes vary from vegetables, to proteins to desserts. Laurey even provides a list of locations to purchase these honey varietal's.

Being a photographer, I love the work of Johnny Autry, and with his wife, Charlotte, as the food stylist, they have, along with the collaboration of Laurey's recipes and details of beekeeping, presented a beautiful book. If this isn't enough, Laurey goes into great detail on beekeeping, the importance of bees, trivia on bees and most candidly, her failure two seasons in a row in beekeeping. I always appreciate when writer's are candid.

I was not disappointed and loved the mixture of beekeeping adventures with the recipes. Unlike some of the reviewers who gave less than 5 stars, I did not anticipate that all of the recipes would have honey in them as the description made it clear. I learned a lot about beekeeping also and think I might entertain the possibility of becoming a beekeeper. This definitely piqued my interest and understanding of how essential these tiny insects are to life as we know it. I have made 3 of the recipes and they all turned out well with my store bought honey. Great sounding recipes and also a contribution to the well-being of the planet.

I’m typically not a big fan of cookbooks, so I don’t ordinarily buy them . . . but I made an exception when I purchased THE FRESH HONEY COOKBOOK (Storey Publishing) by Laurey Masterton, and I’m glad that I did.

This is a delightful book, written by an author who lives in my hometown of Asheville–and whose eatery, Laurey’s Cafe, I have often frequented.Masterton highlights a different honey each month, and she then presents a different appetizer, soup, salad, main course, side, dessert and beverage for each month.

But what makes the book especially interesting to me were the many interesting facts that I learned about bees by reading; for example:

* Honeybees must visit 2 million flowers to collect enough nectar to make 1 pound of honey. It takes 55,000 miles of flight to reach this many flowers–a little more than twice the Earth’s circumference.And I enjoyed learning about how to coexist with bees, and how they can actually help you in many ways–such as the following:

* Bees make honey from the flowers and flowering plants that are within a 3 to 5 radius of their hive. If you suffer from spring allergies, try eating honey from your area, as this is known to alleviate allergy symptoms.

I also liked the various quotes throughout the book, including this one:

The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labors, but because she labors for others.–Saint John Chrysostom

Kudos to John Autry for his vibrant photographs that added to my enjoyment of the book.
