Présentation de l'éditeur

Future Beauty is the first comprehensive survey of Japanese avant-garde fashion of the last 30 years. Such designers as Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto and Rei Kawakubo made an enormous impact on the world fashion scene in the late twentieth century, challenging established notions of beauty and turning fashion into art. Today a new generation of radical designers, among them Tao Kurihara and Jun Takahashi, is fast gaining acclaim. This spectacular book, written by a team of experts led by the eminent fashion historian Akiko Fukai, explores the distinct sensibility of Japanese design - the uniqueness of its form, cut and fabric. Illustrated with over 250 photographs and sketches, Future Beauty is an authoritative and stylish guide to some of the world's most expressive fashion.

This book is great for understanding modern Japanese fashion. Though it does miss over some Japanese designers (especially Hanae Mori, Kansai Yamamoto, and more), this book is overall pretty comprehensive. Covers the greats- Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyaki, Rei Kawakubo, Junya Watanabe, and more. I like that it also alludes to the future beyond the 30 years, introducing newer designers toward the end of the book (wish there were more info and photos of their designs, more on this below). The photos are clear and showcase some of the designers best garments in my personal opinion; at the very least, the photos give you a good idea of the general style each designer's brand(s) are characterized by. The last few pages of the book provide a nice chronology/timeline (with photos at the top) for you to reference; it begins with 1970 and ends with 2010 and includes worldwide events and designers.

Only disappointing aspect is how little coverage the newer designers have in the book. There is only about one page with a few sentences dedicated to each new designer/brand and leaves you wanting much more (and going out to find more info about some of these designers can be challenging)... Mikio Sakabe is one of my favorite designers and I wanted to more info than the 6 sentences given... Also, the size of the photos on many pages is disappointing (see attached photos), but that's me being picky. It's got a lot of great full-page images and close ups of the fabrics.

This book has gotten me through multiple research papers for my fashion degree and those nights when I just want to sit on the couch and read for pleasure. Whether you're a well known fan of Japanese fashion/designers/culture and know all there is to know or you're just a beginner, this is a fabulous book to have on your bookshelf. I hope they will make another in the future to eventually cover "the next generation" of designers/brands mentioned.

Designers that are covered (and are the bulk of the book):
Issey Miyake
Rei Kawakubo
Yohji Yamamoto
Junya Watanabe
Jun Takahashi
Tao Kurihara
(Kenzo is also in the book)

The "Next Generation" designers/brands covered:
Akira Naka
Taro Horiuchi
Sacai
Mina Perhonen
Mikio Sakabe
Mintdesigns
Anrealage
Somarta

Beautiful book that expands on a one of a kind fashion exhibit. Each exhibit piece is detailed in the book with wonderful photos, information about the designer and interesting insights. If you are a fashion lover it's a great book to add to your collection.

A beautiful book to look at, with truly spectacular photos. In addition, it has some interesting written analysis of what the Japanese designers were getting at when they burst upon the fashion world in the early 1980's.
