5.0 étoiles sur 5 The world is missing a great conductor 29 avril 2003
Par jg - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Well - Günter Wand simply is missing in the musical world of today, and he surely cannot be replaced. Having lived in Hamburg (or close by) in the last years I had the great pleassure to listen to almost all concerts of this master live (i.e. sitting in the concert hall), including the one recorded here. For the "big B's" - Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner - you cannot find better recordings than Wand's. The NDR SO with Wand grows probably to one of the world's best orchestras. The performances were allways fascinating masterpieces. Wand is the master of the big picture, the context within the whole piece and the movements themselfs - and the orchestra followed him, sometimes even only on a little movement with his forefinger...
Listening to his recordings - and particularly to this one - I still feel the loss to myself personally due to the death of this big old man, which speeks for the recording itself. Technically the recording is excellent, since it is usually the same bunch of NDR techincians who recorded the Wand performances.
Taken together you cannot go better than with this recording (this is true for all of his recordings by the way...).

1.0 étoiles sur 5 For uber-hardcore Gunter Wand fans only - a funereal performance, at times poorly played, that loves Bruckner's 4th to death 25 décembre 2013
Par Mogulmeister - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
With all due respect to the previous reviewer, jgri, who raves about this performance/recording, I'm of a very different opinion. To my ears, this is a performance that I suspect not even fans of Gunter Wand will consider an important addition to the Wand/B4 discography--his Berlin Philharmonic performance of the 4th is light years ahead of this one. Sadly, it's a not very good performance of a wonderful piece of music that Wand has done much better elsewhere, and which loves Bruckner's 4th to its death. This feels like an interminable, nearly lifeless performance that only comes alive intermittently (end of the second movement, parts of the fourth). Worse than that, some of the playing of the orchestra (trumpets out of tune in the trio of the 3rd movement, brass in the fourth movement) is substandard, and more than that, the NDR Orchestra sounds in this performance as if they're not close to world-class. At their best, the orchestra plays functionally, but you can hear a world of difference between the sound this orchestra produces and the top-rank ones like the VPO, Concertgebouw, Dresden, and of course the BPO during the Karajan years. I'm also not the biggest fan of Gunter Wand to start with, and sadly, he does not make a convincing case for his glacial (and nearly inert) reading of this symphony. Wand unfortunately is not in the same talent league as Celibidache, who showed in his unique reading of the 4th with the Munich Philharmonic on EMI that it's possible to pull off such ridiculously slow speeds.

Off the top of my head, I can think of half a dozen performances that are *vastly* superior to this, including (in order): Karajan/BPO/DG, Chailly/Concertgebouw/Decca, Sawallisch/Philadelphia Orchestra/EMI, Celibidache/Munich/EMI, Blomstedt/SFO/Decca, and Bohm/VPO/Decca, This is billed as Wand's "last recording" from a live concert, and sadly, it's neither memorable nor worth hearing. Bernard Haitink memorably said in an interview not so long ago, "All conductors have a sell-by date." Sadly, this recording indicates that Wand's had passed.

The only point on which I agree with the previous reviewer is that this is a well-engineered recording and it delivers excellent sound. But unfortunately that's all this recording has to offer.
