5.0 étoiles sur 5 a great read... 8 novembre 2012

A great biography of a great man. The basic story of how Gandhi led a non violent revolution to win independence for India from the British is often told. This book covers the Mahatma's entire life, including his work as a lawyer and activist on behalf of Indians in South Africa, his family life, philosophy and some of his more human sides. There are some fantastic tidbits including Gandhi's correspondence with Tolstoy, his visit to a textile mill and slum neighborhoods in England, meeting Charlie Chaplin and more.
The struggle against British rule in India is described in excellent detail. Also, I was interested to read how the Muslims forced a separation for Pakistan on receiving independence from Britain much against Gandhi's wishes. The brutality of the separation between the Hindus and Muslims frames the end of the book. This lends a violent and sad ending to a great success of non violent action.
At the end of course there is tragedy as Gandhi is assassinated. The author then spends two chapters detailing the plot, the assassins and their trial. Sad, but still interesting conclusion.
Hard to figure - the human race can produce a moral giant like Gandhi and the same human race can murder him...
Well worth a read.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 A Masterful Work 24 juin 2009

Yogesh Chadha has produced a wonderful biography of Mohandas K. Gandhi, known to the world as the Great Mahatma, but in reality a man with a noble spirit as well as faults and weaknesses that he would readily admit to. Chadha's biography is a masterful work of comprehensive detail spanning from Gandhi's childhood to his death. He has rivaled the classic Louis Fischer biography and surpassed it in many respects, including details of politics, intrigue, and the assassination, which Fischer did not go into with as much depth. Both biographies are truly excellent. Chadha manages to tell the story of Gandhi without excessive glamorization or unjust criticism. Those wishing to know the Mahatma, and to fully understand his life, should make a point of reading the Chadha biography. Though many of the details are indeed revealed in other published works (Gandhi, Fischer, Tendulkar, for example), and in many respects Chadha leaves the basic story of Gandhi intact, he has composed the work with impressive depth, scope, and readability. Most highly recommended.

After 500 pages of microscopic print and extraordinary detail characterizing the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi, I am truly delighted that I embarked on the adventure contained in this literary masterpiece.

This volume is a vastly more level-headed caricature of Gandhi, I am told. You get the distinct sense that this was a human being, not a saint as some have painted his life and being.

This is also a volume that takes one to the depths of issues like self-sacrifice, racism, conflict between people of different faith persuasions, oppression, the fight for freedom, transition, change, non-violence, the emergence of a nation (S.Africa, Pakistan and India) and death. The issues and the approaches to these issues are a pertinent today as they were during Gandhi's lifetime.

An arduous read for me, yet one I could not abandon. I urge you to do the same. Enjoy.

Product arrived quickly! Only problem was book arrived with dried food or mystery substance on front & back cover. Wouldn't have hurt an employee to take a minute to clean it off!

This was a thorough and engaging review of Ghandi's life. It struck me as being factual without either glorifying or vilifying its subject. The author made appropriate use of extensive quotations from several source documents. Brings Ghandi down to Earth and this helps me to respect the Mahatma even more.
