Présentation de l'éditeur

In Detail

In modern software applications, often there is the necessity to manage very big amounts of unstructured data with varying schema. In this scenario, instead of relational databases, we can use OrientDB, an open source NoSQL DBMS written in Java. Inspite ofDespite being a document-based database, the relationships are managed with direct connections between records. It supports schema-less, schema-full, and schema-mixed modes.

Getting Started with OrientDB 1.3.0 will be your handy, quick reference guide, for all document-graph DBMS functionality. Administrative tasks, deployment, designing a database, different ways of querying and consuming data - all that you need to know about OrientDB is presented keeping with practical usage in mind. You will be able to install, setup, deploy, and configure databases with OrientDB for applications.

Getting Started with OrientDB 1.3.0 will allow you to use its OreintDB’s main functionality immediately. The book will guide you through the discovery of one of the most powerful NoSQL databases available today. It will then take you through downloading and installing OrientDB, cluster deployment, programming, discovering OrientDB’s potential, and its features.

The book covers useful administrative topics such as import/export, automatic backups, and configuration tips. Furthermore, design concepts like user management, document databases, graph databases, and dictionaries are covered. Finally, concepts and programming examples are shown in Java.

A standard tutorial aimed at making you an OrientDB expert, through the use of practical examples, explained in a step-by-step format.

Who this book is for

Getting Started with OrientDB 1.3.0 is great for database designers, developers, and systems engineers. It is assumed that you are familiar with NoSQL concepts, Java, and networking principles.

Unfortunately for me this book was a complete waste of money and I ended up requesting a refund.

Expand on Wiki where it falls short
Organize information from Wiki in a little better format
More real world examples

99% of the information in this book is directly from the Wiki which he refers to in his book. I have no problem with the information being like the Wiki as the Wiki is pretty good, but it really is a bad copy of the Wiki. Nothing is organized any better, nothing is explained in more depth where the Wiki falls short. The Wiki has a lot more information that is not even covered in this book. I guess I was expecting at least something to help augment the Wiki but like I said this is not even a good copy of the it. Never been so upset at a book purchase as I am with this one, really feel robbed. But at least amazon allows for refunds.

Sorry if this is so negative but really this is just a cheat, in my opinion.

After working through the web and reading one superficial dokumentation after another, is was glad someone wrote a book about OrientDB.

This book covers exactly nothing. Every topic is just mentioned. Some really importing statements about performance that would help to understand this database engine better are not explained.

The crucial topic how to import big chunks of data efficiently into the database is not covered.

After reading this book i learned nothing. Even reading the api and some code examples in the orient goole group a more helpfull.

Getting started with OrientDB is the only book on OrientDB available as of yet. The book touches upon most topics including architecture, different types of databases, pseudo SQL engine and performance tuning. Some topics not covered in the book are available as a companion PDF document. I recommend it to anyone who is getting started with OrientDB. Think of this book as a handy collection of tutorials scattered around the web. While the book covers SQL engine quite well, coverage on native java API is rather limited. The book covers OrientDB 1.3. However, most concepts should be applicable to recent versions of OrientDB. I would give 5/5 for the content, but I think editors could have done a better job of editing.

This book covers OrientDB, a document-graph noSQL database, from installation to performance fine tuning.

OrientDB's documentation is available through a wiki and sometimes it's hard to find the right information.

The book starts with a complete installation guide that covers all the flavors of OrientDB on Linux and Windows. By the end of the chapter the reader will have Orient installed and running on his system ready to play.

The second chapter is an administration guide. You will learn how to configure OrientDB editing configurations files or by the Studio web interface. The chapters covers security configuration covering users, roles and record-level security.

The third chapter is a programming guide. From creating a record and deleting it using the console, the chapter will guide through all the apis that Orient offers to the developer: document dB, graph DB, rest interface, JDBC driver.

The chapter on performance covers in detail how to configure the JVM and orient's caches. There are also tips on transactions, indexes, massive insertion.

The final chapter covers advanced Orient features. Orient could be embedded in your applications, but can also be clustered. All you need to know about these, and others features, is in this chapter.

I think this little book is more than a getting started guide. It covers all you need to know about Orient and it is easy to find the information you're looking for. When I work with orient I keep a copy of the book opened on my desktop.
