Not a good book
le 30 juillet 2014
It is unfortunate, but that this book has a lot of pages, which is the plus point. It lacks much. The plotting is ponderous. Each time the author feels it necessary to explain something or other which has appeared in his research ( which he has done to be fair) we get long winded poor explanations, which range from people's thoughts, to contrived conversations. The dialogue is something I found better to skip , read a page, groan, and skip 10, until the next plot point is reached. From the start It just never got any better. A mess of characters and plot. Difficult to put a finger on what's wrong, but it looks like "what mix of people and events can I throw together - ah, "toffs, miners, working class, sufragettes, a few historical references, a bit of war", and then a surprise, a lawyer called I think ( I am too lazy to look this up) Solman, who is "slimy"(was this an accidental or deliberate racial slur?).
Add a bit of sex, and strong women so females will "buy this". So where does this book fit in? Well as a sort of Readers Digest short story, it probably would work, as an 856 page novel, it misses the mark. My advice is walk away, and if you want a book for your holiday, this is not the one.On a Kindle it is very cheap, but not effective as a doorstop.
So why did I read (skip) until the end, well, as the old saying goes, "I wasn't reading the book, I was just recovering my money).
