Présentation de l'éditeur

(Book). Since the inception of the first "electrical" guitars in the 1920s, no other manufacturer has produced a greater variety of professional quality models than Gibson. This book presents a documented account of the instruments released during a highly creative period from the 1930s up to the mid-60s, which saw the coming of age of the electric guitar. It describes all the models that have made history and contributed to establishing the reputation of Gibson. This edition features over 500 illustrations, including 100 in color, and previously unpublished material.

I'm not the foremost expert on vintage guitars as I currently own only two pre 1965 Gibson Archtops but this book is outstanding. I have been searching for a source to identify my current guitars and Mr. Duchossoir has provided me so much more. Mr. John Sprung's photos are outstanding as well. They cover the different variants from year to year as well as what hardware, from pickguards to volume knobs, tuners, bridges etc. The most complete book I've ever found with history and personal accounts of each Gibson model. A definite must for any player/collector of vintage Gibson guitars.

This is a highly valuable reference source on Gibson guitars and basses from the "classic era" of Gibson. It is full of details and specifications I have not found in other reference books, online, or published in VINTAGE GUITAR or other magazines. For example, quotes from his interviews with former Gibson President Ted McCarty reveal vast information about the classic years at Gibson that were not systematically published before this book was printed in 1994. And it sounds just like the Ted McCarty I knew from our chats at the Bigsby factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he was for many years after his time with Gibson! The only complaint I have are some typos on specifications and a few descriptive phrases, but where are the good editors today? We've had many years of writings since this 1994 (revised in 1998) book, yet it remains one of my most important references sources on vintage Gibson guitars and basses, such as the many patent blueprint pages.

This book is much more impressive and well put-together than I was expecting. There's detail in here that you can't find anywhere on line (easily at least). For instance, try to research the history of the mini-humbucker online. Also, I didn't really dig deeply into the book before buying it, but it's actually TWO books in one - the written history, and then a model-by-model number catalog in deep detail (with beautiful color photos in-between - almost a third book). That was a very nice surprise.

Equally as nice is the number of quotes from Gibson employees who were in the authoritative position to comment on the history. Ted McCarty especially seems very open and candid. You really get the feeling for the blend of intense craftsmanship melded to very savvy business sense that made Gibson so great. Every design had a logic to it, but it was executed with master skill - and they weren't sentimental about any of their most beloved creations; for instance, axing the original Les Paul, or any number of hollow bodies that could stand on their own as works of art but simply didn't justify their existence with sales.

I wish I could give the production of the book the same rave review. However, the binding on mine was cheaper than a glossy brochure from a real estate company. Pages started to tear away just from the act of turning them (and I'm very careful with my books). This is a Hal Leonard book, and I think they just used the same method for binding that they use on their music-lesson books. It works fine for skinnier books. Or perhaps I just got a bad copy. But the CONTENTS deserve better - a hard cover too. I would decry the lack of color photography, but the center section of color photographs is so nicely done, that it makes up for it. And the B&W photography in the book body is always applicable to the content; so much so that as soon as I started reading about a guitar my eye automatically started to wander the surrounding pictures looking for the example. Plus, they printed a lot of nice advertisements at sizes big enough for you to easily read.

Now I'm off to find an ES-5 Switchmaster.

While doing research on a rare Gibson electric double neck 6/12 guitar called the Double 12, I asked George Gruhn where I could get accurate, authoritatve information. George recommended a couple books, especially Duchossoir's Gibson Electrics - The Classic Years. I am glad I have ordered my copy. If you own, have interest or are considering to play a vintage Gibson electric guitar, this book is worth every penny. It is extremely well organized, packed with facts and pictures and a compelling read. Highly recommended.

I have an earlier version of this book and I love it. It is very comprehensive distinquishing different Gibson electrics and provides insightful information. I own 3 Gibson electrics presently, the earliest being a 1951 ES-175, (which also happens to be my birth year) verifying the specs on the first ES-175 helped me know I was getting an original complete guitar, right down to the old beat up case. Even if you don't have a vintage Gibson it is a great book on a great American product respected throughout the world.
