Présentation de l'éditeur

MEMOIR MEETS THRILLER: Set against a 1969 psychedelic love-in backdrop, The Girl From Long Guyland is shared through the eyes of Laila Levin when decades later, an unsolved murder pulls her reluctantly into her past. A dramatic collision of then and now -- entwining family, marriage, profession and ethics.

Laila enjoys a successful marriage and a thriving career as an I.T. executive in Austin, Texas, but she can't quite shake her lifelong sense of not truly belonging anywhere.

When her company announces a major layoff, Laila finds herself caught between an unscrupulous CEO and her promiscuous boss. Then news of her college roommate's suicide stirs up a dark secret involving three devious friends from her past. One has betrayed a vow, another wants to rekindle their romance, and the third is out for revenge.

Suddenly for Laila, it's 1969 again. She's only seventeen, and she's left her sheltered home in Long Island for college in Connecticut. Amid protests of the Vietnam War, she's tempted by the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll that rule her generation. Laila gets swept up in a deceptive love triangle with two older locals and initiated into their unethical hippie family. Too late she realizes her search to belong has led to tragedy.

Laila must now juggle the demands of her perplexed husband and her baby boomer past forcing her to make choices that endanger her survival and challenge her conscience.

She learns that the lines between right and wrong are often blurred, and sometimes you have to risk everything to be true to yourself.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 What happens when your past catches up with you ... 31 mai 2016

I always thought the turbulant anti-war movement in the 60s was compromised by the legions of uninformed, emotional teens, most of whom were stoned or worse the majority of the time. This book chronicles one flower child's experience of that period; how she was sucked into the life and crimes of an alternate "family", and how this came to haunt and threaten her years later. Excellent writing, lots of suspense, wonderfully developed characters. I look forward to reading more of Lara Reznik's books and so will you.

I am a child of the 60s and 70s, so I've loved being brought back to that time in this book. Ms. Reznik has a great ability to pick those details that capture the essence of the moment, so not only is there danger and suspense in this book, but it's happening in a world that rings true and swallows me up fully. Her characters are real and often unpredictable (which I really enjoy), and the pace is fast. It's an engrossing read right up to Laila's final realization in the last paragraph.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A juicy novel full of suspense that takes me back in time 6 mai 2017

The Girl from LongGuyland is a great read. The story goes back and forth between two time periods; the late 60’s/early 70’s and 40 years later. Laila, the central character, was young, going off to college and looking for fun and adventure as many young people do with their new found freedom. She was smart, but easily swayed by drugs, rock and roll, and cunning young men who took advantage of her vulnerability. Along the way, she made several bad choices, and found herself in some very dicey situations. The novel weaves around a murder mystery as the central plot, which you’re drawn into immediately. There are elements of danger, suspense, lies and deceit, with an added portion of romance. I found the characters well-developed where I could say, Oh, yea, I knew someone just like that! I loved how, Laura, the author, was able to take me back in time to the early 70’s with such vivid detail! As a baby boomer I can totally relate and loved the trip down memory lane. This novel is well-written, draws the reader in immediately and keeps you page-turning till the very end. I highly recommend it!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Strange Title - Fabulous Story! 6 septembre 2013

I devoured this book in two days. Loved it. Couldn't wait to see how it all turned out. I put off loads of tasks while I read voraciously. The Girl from Long Guyland was an experience, not just a good read.
I am four years younger than the protagonist and identified with the time period and all that the hippy era offered, in a big, gorgeous way. What a blast from the past. But, I'm pretty sure that anyone could appreciate the stylized writing, characters and intricate plot of this beautifully crafted tale. The suspenseful story not only includes the question of what really happened that night at college but holds many hidden tense moments as we journey through the first year away from home with an impressionable, but moral girl from Long Island.
The title and cover initially kept me from buying the book(Sorry) but when I read the blurb, perused some reviews and realized I had no idea what genre it fit in, I knew I had to give it a try.
Resnik is a strong writer, funny, talented, and spins a story loaded with subplots, enough to keep the pages turning. The characters were so real, so horribly flawed, it was refreshing to root for a gal who was such a mess, both teenaged and middle aged.
I encourage anyone who is interested in the hippy era to pick up The Girl from Long Guyland and see if you can put it down. And for everyone else, go ahead, see if free love and passing the bong is interesting to you when coupled with a mysterious secret kept for forty years.

Fun read that I loved from the start and lost a little love toward the end. The story telling was better up front, IMO, but that doesn't mean it is a bad read. I liked the characters, I liked remembering the days of drugs, sex and rock n roll. Not an excellent book, but worth paying to read it. I will try another by this author and see if I fall in love with her or walk away. Get it, you'll like it.
