Présentation de l'éditeur

Twenty years ago, eight-year-old Charlotte Abernathy vanished while playing near her family's house. Despite a frantic search, no trace of her was found until a year later, when the little girl turned up on the doorstep with no memory of where she'd been.

Today, Charlotte has put her mysterious ordeal behind her, even though she's never learned where she was during that missing year. However, when her eight-year-old niece vanishes in similar circumstances, a fully-grown Charlotte is forced to make a fresh attempt to uncover the truth.

The Girl Who Never Came Back is the story of a woman who is forced to confront her family's dark past. In the process, she begins to unravel the secret surrounding her disappearance, the horrific truth about her niece's fate, and the identity of the ghostly figure that seems to haunt the family.

Contains mild violence and occasional strong language.

Warning: plot spoiler

Mother claims child is missing but in fact keeps her in the garden shed for a year, all in an effort to 'get her own back' on her sister who got all the attention when they were younger. Father does not once notice his child is living in the shed, the child apparently doesn't it find it odd.

It really is as bad as it sounds.

I am very happy I got this book for free. I would be upset if I had paid for what I just finished. This is a very...strange book. It had a lot of promise, and honestly, the beginning had caught my interest. Which is the reason for the extra star. It's just that as I continued to read, it was starting to get weirder, and weirder. First off, someone needs to edit this book, badly. It jumps between first and third person POV, names are mixed up and wrong. Normally, I'm not one to point those things out, because I, myself don't notice them. But they were very apparent in this book.

Second, none of the characters were likable. At all. I didn't care what happened to Charlotte, because I found her insufferable. Her sister was just as bad. Just...all of them were weird, angry people and I didn't like one of them. Not Tony, the brother in law who was the authors attempt at a normal, sane character. I just can't even stress how there was not one redeeming character in this whole book. There's no character development. There's no growth.

The plot had a lot of promise, but it fell so short of what it could have been. I won't spoil anything, but the
'twist' ending was just weird, and not believable at all. I always try to suspend some sense of reality when reading because I read for enjoyment, but it was just too far fetched for me. It could have been much better.

I wouldn't recommend this book. It wasn't anything special, the characters were unlikable throughout the whole book, the plot although it had promise, didn't deliver. Plus, it seriously needs an editor.

No spoilers, although I should. Story started off in a fairy tail sort of prose "once upon a time" etc... Each chapter varying between a story about this 8 year old girl who disappears for a year and 20 years in the future. The story dragged for me, I started skimming over pages of redundancy, which I never do, the only thing driving me on being the maddening curiosity about what happened to this little girl. I never cared about her character, the characters weren't fleshed out or grew in any way. The small chunks of story from the 8 year old time frame end up being pointless and a waste of space contributing nothing to the story. You find out the crazy, twisted, what really happened to her in one confess-all near the end which leads right to another confess all about the now missing girl whose situation is remarkably similar to the case 20 years ago to be concluded with no wrap up or satisfactory ending whatsoever. Crazy stuff happens then oh, ok, I'm going back to London. The end. Don't waste your time.

This book truly needs a good editor. I find that free or heavily discounted kindle books are generally filled with errors, and this book is one of them. I cannot imagine why someone would take the time to write a book, and then not have it edited. Really, just having a friend or two read it over would have caught at least SOME of the errors. Spelling, grammar, word usage, and switching back from past tense to present tense are among the errors in this book. I start at 5 stars with my reviews, then take stars off for certain things I find or do not find in the book. No matter how good the story, my reviews take away one star for editing. The story here is so completely unbelievable it should be listed under the category of fantasy. There goes another star. The next star is for character development, or lack thereof. I found that I did not care at all about any of the characters, and did not care what happened to them. I only read the entire book because it is not fair to review a book I did not finish. There was way too much gratuitous cursing. In fairness, the author did state that the book contained swearing. The thing is, if an author decides to use curse words, they should add something to a story, not detract from the story. An occasional curse word is far more effective than having every other word the "f" word. How can you tell if a person is truly angry when that person swears no matter what the emotional state? A good editor would have not only corrected spelling and grammar, but would have (or should have) suggested saving curse words to make a point, not to see how many swear words you can possibly use in one sentence. Thus, per my rating system, the book gets only one star.

HASH(0x98d344c8) étoiles sur 5 Ridiculous...and more ridiculous 28 décembre 2013

I'm not sure how I ended up choosing this book...and feel like I wasted my time, even skimming most of the last half. I kept hoping it would somehow all come together, and in spite of the painful redundancy in the writing at least come to a satisfying conclusion. Wrong on all counts.
This story reads and feels like something a middle school student would write. Story is just ludicrous, and gets even more so as it crushes along toward its `conclusion`. I'm no prude, but the "f" word was used to a ridiculous extreme. And there was no character development at all, so I didn't relate to anyone in the story. Enough time wasted.

This story needed a lot of work. Please get an editor! The actual storyline is very good. But there is so much hatred between all of the characters and Charlotte herself is not a very likeable person. Also the sheer amount of language and vulgarity are a major turn off. Okay, with all of that being said, I firmly believe that if this book were to be re-edited and cleaned up (a lot), it would be a great psychological thriller. The conclusion was one that I didn't see coming at all! Very good job on that. Also, by the end you did understand why everyone was the way they were but is was still just to hard of a read the way it is written. I was very happy with the ending though. I couldn't figure out where it was going but was very surprised and pleased with how it ended. Even with that though, I really didn't like the book as a whole and would not recommend it unless it were to be redone.
