1.0 étoiles sur 5 Difficult to Setup, Horrible Documentation, Poor Support 2 août 2015
Par JMAC - Publié sur Amazon.com

August 1, 2015 - So far, the GoPro Wi-Fi Bac Pac is a huge disappointment. I've already spent four hours trying to follow the instructions on the GoPro site to no avail. It's been one problem after another, complicated immensely by poorly written documentation. Here's a brief synopsis of the nightmare so far.

A note in the box says the first thing you need to do is update the firmware. So they KNOW when packaging it that it's out of date. Fair enough. Only one problem: they require you to update the device using the GoPro Studio app. I downloaded it (so I know I have the current version) but, SURPRISE!, it cannot detect the device. Windows can - I installed the device driver and Device Manager sees it and says it's working. Uninstall and reinstall Studio with the device driver still installed but get the same problem. Checked support on the GoPro website. Instructions for my camera (HD HERO 2) and the Wi-Fi Bac Pac are not correct. Sent a support request but get an e-mail saying "due to a high volume of requests for support..." Given my experience so far it's no surprise a lot of people need support.

I finally get the GoPro app loaded on my phone but when I try to connect it asks for the password. It says if the device is new I can use the default password but, SURPRISE!, when I enter the default I get an error saying I can't use the default password. I look up how to change the password on the GoPro site. You have to use the Studio app. The very Studio app that can't connect to the brand new Bac Pac. GOTCHA, SUCKER!

I call GoPro's 800 number. The person that answers asks the basic "is the Bac Pac connected to a USB port" questions then puts me on hold to "open a ticket." Fifteen minutes later he returns to tell me the instructions to "check" my laptop are so complex that they are sending me a checklist via e-mail. Still waiting for that.

If this isn't sorted out this weekend it's going back to Amazon for a refund. GoPro is pushing their new HERO4 cameras hard but, given all the problems I've had with the most basic setup and operation of this device I would be a fool to spend any more with them.

Update August 5, 2015: It's been five days since I opened a case with GoPro for support by e-mail and phone. Zero response. So I tried their chat support. Sorry, that's just for orders. (They are very responsive BEFORE they get your money.) Can't help and referred me to their 800 number for technical support. I've been on the line for 59 minutes so far listening to horrible hold muzak and "All GoPro agents are busy at this time..." recordings. (If my experience is typical it's no wonder they are busy. Their software doesn't work and their documentation is terrible.) But I have been using the time productively by packing the Wi-Fi Bac Pac in the original box to return for a refund.

If you are brave enough to purchase anything from GoPro PRAY that it works perfectly out of the box. If not, send it back immediately. I can testify from experience that their "support" is the worst I have ever experienced with a tech vendor. I have been an IT professional for decades and know I would be unemployed if the company I work for treated their customers as GoPro does. Caveat emptor!

Update August 6, 2015: Finally got through to GoPro Support but they were no help. On my own I figured out that the problem is that the laptop I was using had only USB 3.0 ports. For some reason the GoPro WiFi BacPac absolutely does NOT work with USB 3.0. Fortunately I had an old computer and was able to connect to update the firmware and change the password from the default. If you purchase one of these things you will need an older computer with at least one USB 2.0 port to maintain it. Very odd because USB 3.0 is backwards compatible and the GoPro BacPac is the first device out of dozens I use that have had a problem with USB 3.0.

The phone app works (I'm using a Samsung S5) and the other reviews that describe it as slow and choppy are accurate. The main reason I want it is to position the HD HERO 2 camera while mounted on a motorcycle helmet and start it in the correct mode. (No, not while riding! Before starting out.) The tiny LCD on the front panel of the camera is difficult to read in ideal conditions and nearly impossible to read in sunlight. While not perfect, the phone app and Wifi BacPac will let me do what I need.

I cannot recommend the Wifi BacPac unless you are desperate to add phone control to an older HERO camera. I had considered upgrading but, given this experience, will wait until I can speak with others using GoPro products before spending the money.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Solid hardware, but just buy a newer camera 18 novembre 2014

No doubt, this is a good accessory for the older Hero2 (and other) cameras that lack built-in Wi-Fi. Setup is easy, and it works well.

PROS: Provides excellent control over your camera from a mobile device. I used it with an Android tablet as well as an Android phone, and both worked with the BacPac flawlessly. I really like having the extended range of controls available in the app.

* Overpriced. Simply put, this accessory costs way more than it should.
* The original firmware had one page for Wi-Fi settings, and another page with a prominent Bluetooth logo that said "Coming Soon, visit gopro.com". After updating to the latest firmware as of 11/15/2014, there is no mention of Bluetooth connectivity. What a tease and letdown.
* It's bulky, but keep in mind it is a few years old and the newer cameras have wi-fi built in, so the bulk of this device, back a couple years, is not a big deal.

At this point, if somebody was interested in purchasing this, I'd recommend saving a little more cash and instead purchase one of the newer Gopro cameras that already have wi-fi.

In order to use this you must set up a wifi password and GoPro account password. The GoPro camera has to have its software updated and the BacPac must also be updated. My camera did not come as pictured. There was no user manual or comsumer packaging. I am returning this BacPac.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great for Setting the Shot 7 février 2013

This works great for setting up multiple cameras on a remote or for setting the camera for the right shot using the GoPro app on iOS or Android. I haven't had an issue getting connected with either OS and it seems to work well. The key seems to be to make sure the firmware is updated properly. When I first tried to update the firmware several months ago, the instructions told me to have the Bacpac connected to the camera but I found I had a difficult time getting it to work. I just removed it and plugged it into the computer and that seems to be the trick. I haven't had a problem updating since then and I have updated a few of these.
Overall, they work just fine. I'm not going to review GoPro's lack of competence when it comes to delivering advertised features on time as they consistently fail in that respect with regard to the WiFi apps but hopefully they'll eventually come out with those things sooner rather than later, although I won't hold my breath.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great accessory for the price - now that the updates & app are ready 16 octobre 2013

I had been considering getting the wifi bacpac & remote since it was first announced, but waited for the app & updates to be released. The price for the remote + bacpac for my Hero HD2 is still more than I want to pay for the 2 accessories, but this bacpac is at a great price now - I paid ~$23. All I really wanted to do with the bacpac is aim the camera better when placing it in different places on my helmet or motorcycle. The bacpac works great for that, as well as reviewing videos. I'm thinking of getting another GoPro now, probably the Hero 3+, and then linking the included remote to both cameras for different views at the same time (like putting the Hero 2 on the bike's tail for a rear-view video). The low price on the wifi bacpac adds just the right feature I wanted to justify a new camera purchase without wasting money on the bacpac/remote combo.

As far as performance, everyone else has said it just as it is: there is a lag, but for me, it doesn't impact my experience due to how I use it. It's also nice to be able to turn the camera on & off, but I usually just turn the wifi bacpac on while aiming the camera, then turn off the bacpac & use the camera manually to save on the wifi bacpac's battery. I may update my review with further experience when I get the 2nd camera & see how the battery life is on the bacpac while under constant use linked to the remote.

One thing I noticed is the bacpac shows a Bluetooth icon (briefly), but doesn't appear to offer a Bluetooth connection. I know Bluetooth is slower, but it would be nice to be able to use it while connected to a wifi or 4G network to upload video from the camera. I assume they're working on updating the app sometime in the future to support some way to stream and upload straight from the camera, but I'm not sure how since my data connection is otherwise disabled while connected to the wifi bacpac.

UPDATE (already) 10/17/13: Hoping to use the wifi bacpac & my phone as a remote, I plugged the camera into the mini HDMI cable connected to my TV to watch the videos on the big screen, but the wifi bacpac control & HDMI-out appear to be mutually exclusive. Would be convenient to not have to stand within reach of the camera to skip from one video to another or use the slow motion & other playback features when sharing videos with everyone on the big screen. Also, I noticed the battery life of the bacpac is pretty awful, but again, for aiming the camera & brief review of video, it's sufficient... until the battery goes dead while away from a charging source (on the bike). FYI - according to GoPro, the wifi bacpac will take power from the camera's internal battery if the bacpac's battery level becomes critically low. Note to self: carry an extra mini-USB car charger cable & zip ties to route the charging wire to the bacpac on the bike if I want to use it extensively.
